Now, at a time when the Patriots face the need to get better this offseason, they must confront what they must do in order to close the gap on the two teams that were in New Orleans. New England must determine whether or not it can compete with teams like San Francisco and Baltimore without a dynamic, home run-hitting offense predicated not just on Tom Brady’s ability to sync up with his receivers on short and intermediate passing routes, but also on the ability to go deep.

Gray: Joe Flacco has been maligned. He’s taken an awful lot of criticism. He says he has a chip on his shoulder. He’s played out his contract. This is his final game with the Ravens under the current deal. He’s just hitting the cash register as Boomer Esiason said. Are you surprised that Flacco has come into the game with everything he has gone through and putting forth this type of performance?

Brady: “Well, he’s playing great and there’s no better time to play great than in the Super Bowl. He’s had a tremendous postseason and he’s really leading this team. He’s done that, really, since he’s come into the league. So it doesn’t surprise me at all what he’s been accomplishing this postseason. It’s really a great game to watch him play. He’s a super talented guy.”

Former Patriots defensive coordinator Dean Pees was burned when he sent pressure on a key play in Super Bowl XLII, as the Giants scored the game-winning touchdown on a Plaxico Burress catch against overmatched and outsized cornerback Ellis Hobbs. On the key fourth-down play in this game, Pees – now the Ravens’ defensive coordinator – sent pressure and it worked. Specific to Pees, the link between those two moments resonated here.
