Gostkowski was asked about Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff’s miss that sent the Patriots to the Super Bowl, and said, “I was excited that we won, and that we were going to the Super Bowl, but at the same time, I would have rather been able to kick our team into it than see someone [miss], but it’s part of the game. It could just as easily happen to me, or anyone else in the NFL.”

I think across the board, these guys are hungry. A lot of the younger guys just want a chance, and they’ll do everything they can to make the most of that chance,” he added. “Specifically, in regards to the offensive linemen, it’s a group of real hardworking guys. They’ve all been consistent through the offseason program. They’ve done a great job of sticking together — the guys usually stick together by position, and they all try and push each other. This is a group of real competitors.

When all is said and done, wouldn’t be surprised if Joseph Addai is one of the Patriots’ best signings in free agency this year (contract here). Hearing positive things about Addai in recent weeks as the fit seems right – a low-key, versatile, mentor-type professional to pair with younger backs Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen, as well as Danny Woodhead.

It’s no secret that the New England Patriots have one of the most complex and intricate passing games in the NFL. Even when they’re running things that look pretty standard, like three-vertical schemes and 2-TE sets (which they obviously do better than anybody else). Tom Brady is master and commander of an offense that has a dizzying array of option routes. Brady has to be in perfect sync with his receivers as a result, and those receivers must be aware of every permutation in the “if this/then that” aspects of the passing game.

Beyond Ridley, Vereen will likely compete with the versatile Danny Woodhead and veteran offseason pick-up Joseph Addai. Despite that fact, Vereen isn’t missing the opportunity to learn from the 29-year old Addai, who comes to New England after six years in Indianapolis where he contributed in a number of ways for the Colts. “Joe’s a real good dude. He’s been around the league for a while, so you can learn stuff from him on the field as well as off the field,” Vereen said. “We’ve just reached the starting point of everything that I’m able to learn from him. I’ve only been around him for a couple weeks now. The more I’m around him, the more I’m sure the whole running back group will learn.”

Is anyone else secretly concerned that Joseph Addai was just sent here to destroy us from within? Or have I just been reading too much Game of Thrones?
