Archives for May 2012

May 8, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Every year, there are players who fall dramatically in the pre-draft process because they’ve been caught smoking weed. A short list of those guys includes Warren Sapp, Randy Moss, Percy Harvin and Aaron Hernandez. Guys who punch women or drive pickup trucks into old folks’ homes: bad investments. Guys who smoke dope in college? Well, that’s basically every single person in America. I’m not going to say smoking weed is good for your health, but when it comes to football, I’d much rather have my rocked-up 270-pound monster stoned, giggling and watching cartoons than drunk, belligerent, and stumbling toward his car in the parking lot of an Atlanta strip club.

Bengals, Patriots, Giants, Chiefs ace 2012 NFL Draft – NFL.com

Bengals, Patriots, Giants, Chiefs ace 2012 NFL Draft – NFL.com

New England Patriots: A Bill Belichick cleverly maneuvered around the draft board to address the Patriots’ suspect defense. He nabbed a pair of first-round difference makers in Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower, and found a few potential sleepers in Alfonzo Dennard and Jake Bequette.

Best pick: Dont’a Hightower, LB, Alabama (Round 1, 25). Hightower is a productive player capable of filling a variety of roles in the Patriots’ hybrid defense.

Questionable pick: Tavon Wilson, DB, Illinois (Round 2, 48). Wilson is not a household name and his second-round selection stunned many observers, but his versatility could prove invaluable in the back end.

Sleeper pick: Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska (Round 7, 224). Dennard’s draft stock fell dramatically after a poor performance at the Senior Bowl and questionable character decisions in recent weeks (including an arrest for allegedly assaulting a police officer just days before the draft). However, he has considerable talent and could carve out a big role as a nickel corner.

1. Tom Brady, New England Patriots: Week 1 @ Miami Dolphins And the best performance of the season also happened to be the highest-graded QB display of all time. His season may not have ended as he would have liked, but it started with an incredible effort: 517 yards on 48 attempts. The previous year we’d suggested Brady was more dink-and-dunk than people were prepared to admit, but he started off 2011 by picking up 320 yards on balls thrown more than 10 yards as the Patriots put the Dolphins in their place.

What do you think will be our biggest weakness this year? Receiving court, pass rush, pass protection, secondary…?

Great question. 1. Interior OL – This was a concern for me when Mankins was still on the team so it’s still a significant one. I think that my predicted OL of Solder-Kline-Wendell-Connolly-Vollmer will be fine. 4/5ths of them have played together the last two seasons and while they had their struggles at times, they […]
