OLB Matt Roth – Browns to Patriots
The Patriots are most effective on defense when they can set the edge with big outside backers who have the ability to rush the passer in a physical style. Roth has been a good addition for the Browns since he left Miami and has been able to accumulate 7.5 sacks in the last 22 games and over 100 tackles. Roth is not an ideal coverage outside backer, but his size, toughness and power would fit in perfectly with the Patriots.

Pretty cool video of Markell Carter being honored at an Little Rock Touchdown Club Awards Banquet. You might want to fast forward through a the ads at the start but it’s worth it. There are some highlights and you can hear Markell’s acceptance speech which shows what a true Patriot he really is.
I don’t know if Carter will be the pass rusher we’re all hoping for, but I’m happy for him to get a shot in the NFL. Seems like he’s the kind of person with the kind of character that will take advantage of it.

“He was our drop end. So any time we zone blitzed, we never brought him on a zone blitz. He always dropped. And we zone blitzed a good bit. And I think that’s one of the things that made it easier for New England when they were watching on film to say that this was a guy they could transition to that position, because they saw him dropping.
“Hey, he’s got some of the best hands on our team. He goes over there and catches Jugs with our receivers and talks trash with the receivers. He’s a good enough receiver catching the ball to play receiver. He’s not going to go out there and run a 4.5 like those guys do, but he can catch the ball. He’s got hands to play receiver. But I’m going to say athletically it’ll be no problem. He was an all-state basketball player. He’s an athlete.”
Augustine actually thinks that getting after the quarterback is Carter’s primary natural strength.
“I think what got him to the position he is right now is his ability to rush the passer,” Augustine said. “Natural way of getting off the ball and then closing his shoulders around the edge of the offensive linemen and getting their hands off him. He can flip his hips, and do all that stuff. But he doesn’t excel at that. He excels at keeping the hands off and dipping and leaning the corner.”

This puts a new spin on the whole Lockout/CBA debacle. I highly recommend you check it out. Here’s just a small snippet of the thesis:
Why is the league so violently opposed to sharing the same percentage of revenue with the players that it has for the last ten years? I propose it’s because the NFL revenue sharing system is broken, and instead of fixing it, the owners think it’ll be easier to fix by getting more money out of the players than from each other.
[Eric Moore] is an interesting player when it comes to the Patriots’ 2011 roster. He is 30 years old, joined the club in December and played a variety of roles – rush end, outside linebacker, defensive end in the 3-4. He started three games because of some injuries. Bill Belichick was asked about Moore on the final day of the draft and said: “He came in here at the end of the year at the tail end of the season and was able to contribute. I don’t think that’s the easiest thing to do. A player has got to have some things going for him to be able to do that. It would be nice to work with him through an entire season – whether it’s minicamp, training camp, whatever it happens to be, and give him an opportunity from the beginning, and see if that is helpful to their performance and production.”

Frenz: Patriots have the most complete backfield in the NFL
Good stuff as always from my podcast mate. This Patriots backfield has to be one of the most intriguing in the NFL. Last year everyone said the Pats could play any style of game offensively, and that might’ve been a little overblown in terms of their backfield. But now you’ve got four unique backs who each bring something different to the party.
Of course there’s some overlap between them, and that’s a good thing. Just imagine being a defender and having to constantly identify who’s in the backfield and what the biggest threat is.
Couldn’t be more excited to see how it all comes together. And seriously, the first person who tries to call it a “four-headed monster” gets deported from Patriots Nation.
