Point Blank: A Vince Wilfork Appreciation Post

August 8, 2017 by Mike Dussault

After having to gather myself to write a send off for Rob Ninkovich last week, now having to do one for Vince Wilfork is making things a little misty here in the Ministry of PatsPropaganda. Wilfork retired yesterday after two final years in Houston, meaning his final game was appropriately in Foxboro against the Patriots.

Well y’all – it’s been a great run, but the time has come. @Kingsford #Sponsored pic.twitter.com/DXfDzholBi

Now we can forget about those two years Big Vince had as a Texan and just remember him as the Patriots stalwart that he was. The Patriots have planned a press conference for Wilfork on Wednesday and I’m so fired up for it. It will be great to welcome Vince home one last time and hopefully we’ll be seeing more of him and the former first lady of Patriots Nation, Bianca, around Foxboro.

I’m not sure who Hard Knocks has me missing more, Big Vince or Vrabel. Either way it’s clear to see what made both such beloved players in New England not only on the field but off it.

I always knew Mike was going to be a coach just because of the way he carried himself on the field. Being able to play with him and see him now as a coach, he’s the same guy. I tell guys all the time, if Vrabel gets in shape right now he probably could still play football. That’s the one guy out of all the guys I played with I think hands down he was the best all-around teammate that I ever had: Mike Vrabel. And that says a lot because I played with some great, great guys. A lot of guys are my friends. But all around from offense, defense, special teams, player, coach on the field – you name it, a friend, a mentor, everything you can name, that was Mike Vrabel. He’s still like that to this day.

Few players reached or will ever reach the special level of Vince Wilfork. He is a great champion and one of the classiest people I have ever been around – just a kind, genuine and giving person who was all about our team, football, winning and bringing joy to others. There may have never been anyone at his position with as much strength, toughness, intelligence, instinctiveness and athleticism. He is the best defensive linemen I ever coached, an all-time great Patriot whose place on our team will be missed but whose remarkable career as a Patriot will be remembered forever.

Thanks for the memories, Big Vince! Wilfork signed with the Texans today, a good fit for him and a good fit for New England fans who didn’t want to see him in Indy or Baltimore. Although now the Patriots not only play the Texans this year, but it also lines Houston up as a legitimate potential playoff opponent.

Oh well, no time to worry about that now. Everything that could be said about Wilfork has been said here. You can check out an all Wilfork PatsPropaganda here.

A must-read from Jerry and as you’ll see if you read my piece, there are some similar themes and links. Because you know, great Patriots minds think alike.
