Tweets of Note from Patriots’ First Joint Practice with Saints

August 19, 2015 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots hit the field with the Saints down in West Virginia today, getting a chance to hit someone else for a change. It’s especially good to go up an established team with an “elite” quarterback as well as a different defensive scheme that will challenge the Patriots in new and different ways.

Here are the tweets of note…

Biggest takeaway of practice for me was Saints going after CB Malcolm Butler in 11-on-11s. First time we have seen Butler struggle in camp.

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 19, 2015

This might give some people a scare, but in the long term it’s probably one of the best things that can happen to Butler at this point. He’s going to give up catches this year and what’s most important is how he responds. So to get lit up in practice a bit will show him what he needs to work on. We still can’t deny that Butler has looked very good this summer but let’s remember he’s still very inexperienced and has a way to go.

Patriots often played three safeties today. Chung, Richards, Harmon on one series; Wilson, Ebner, Harmon on next.

— Kevin Duffy (@KevinRDuffy) August 19, 2015

I think there’s something brewing here with the three safety looks and that’s why I think we could see six safeties stick on the roster. If they will be playing more zone it makes sense to put your smartest and most experienced guys on the field, but there’s also the element of physicality that this group brings that will make tough sledding for opposing offenses across the middle of the field.

Brady threw a sick TD to Amendola behind two DBs in the back corner of the end zone. Perfect loft from the 10 to cap a 2-minute drill.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 19, 2015

Tarell Brown is charging hard for a starting job. Two PBUs in the end zone as Brees was 1 of 5 from the 10 in an 11-on-11 period.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 19, 2015

At this point I’m just hoping they can manage Tarrell Brown and have him ready to go for the start of the season. It seems like Butler, Brown and McClain are the favorites to start the three corner spots.

On health front, good indication that LB Dont’a Hightower is making progress is that he is now cleared for full contact. A full participant.

Preseason Week 1 Patriots 53-man Roster Projection

August 11, 2015 by Mike Dussault

As expected things have been made a little easier with some of the injuries, or more specifically the injury news, that we’ve gotten over the first week-and-a-half of training camp.

Here’s where I’m at on my 53-man, and I think it’s important to mention that this isn’t just about who makes the team, it’s about who you want to protect and who you want to guarantee salary to.

OFFENSE

QB (2) T.Brady, J.Garoppolo – Brady misses zero games.

RB (5) B.Bolden, J.White, T.Cadet, J.Gray, James Develin (Blount gets roster exemption for suspension) – Develin in, Gaffney out.

WR (5) J.Edelman, B.LaFell, D.Amendola, A.Dobson, M.Slater – Dobson’s got another injury. If he misses extended time they might be done with him. On the fence with Gibson and Tyms.

TE (3) R.Gronkowski, S.Chandler, M.Hoomanawanui – Pretty safe bet this is where we end up unless Chandler misses a lot of time and they need another vet.

OL  (8) B.Stork, T.Jackson, S.Mason, R.Wendell, M.Cannon, N.Solder, S.Vollmer, Fleming: Considered keeping Kline but I think they have enough versatility to manage with this eight.

DEFENSE

DE (5) R.Ninkovich, C.Jones, J.Sheard, G.Grissom, T.Flowers – Exciting group who can be moved all over the place.

DT (5) S.Siliga, A.Branch, Z.Moore, M.Brown, D.Easley – Moved Moore here, I think he’s an interior tackle guy now, at least on passing downs. Antonio Johnson is a good story, I think his fate is tied to Branch. We’ll see if either stand out in preseason.

ILB(3) J. Mayo, J.Freeny, J.Morris – Fletcher will be on the PUP into the season (out 6 weeks), Freeny is a good veteran presence with special team value while Morris sneaks on the roster.

OLB(3) D. Hightower, J.Collins, D.Fleming – Fleming is one to watch on Thursday. Should play a lot and could take a big step forward this year.

CB (5) L.Ryan, T.Brown, M.Butler, M.McClain, D. Roberts – Fletcher’s a tough cut, but Brown has emerged. Roberts grabs one of the last roster spots. Jean is a good practice squad candidate as well.

S (6) D.McCourty, D.Harmon, P.Chung, J.Richards, T.Wilson, N.Ebner – Wilson having too good a camp to cut, he has special teams value too.

ST (3) S.Gostkowski, R.Allen, J.Cardona – Yup.

Tweets of Note from Patriots Training Camp on Monday

August 10, 2015 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots were off yesterday and it appeared a chance for them to reset their roster a bit and decide what changes needed to be made after a rash of injuries late last week had left them a little thin at a number of positions. Even the top gambling site reviews won’t like the Patriots chances in September if they’re without so many key players, so they’re protecting themselves with solid moves now.

They announced two moves earlier today, the first swapping out Matt Flynn, who still hadn’t passed a physical for former Cardinals quarterback Ryan Lindley. Obviously if Brady’s suspension sticks, they need a backup for Jimmy Garoppolo who can actually hit the field. It’s sure to be a steep learning curve for Lindley, but let’s hope we never have to see him take a snap outside of the preseason.

They also traded fifth-round pick Matthew Wells to the Bears for guard Ryan Groy, who started some games last year as a rookie. Obviously with Wendell still on PUP, they needed some experienced depth because while Tre Jackson might step in and start from day one, Shaq Mason probably needs some more experience in the passing game.

The Pats did get a boost today with a number of guys returning, including Julian Edelman, Brian Tyms, Matthew Slater and Alan Branch.

Here are the tweets of note from practice…

Scene setter: CB Malcolm Butler broke up a Tom Brady long bomb down right sideline, w/ impressive timed leap & swat-away. Crowd cheers.

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 10, 2015

Jerod Mayo just laid a pretty good lick on Rob Gronkowski. Audible “oooohs” from fans and media.

— Erik Frenz (@ErikFrenz) August 10, 2015

Malcolm Butler jumped Josh Boyce’s crossing route to make a “did he really just do that” one-handed INT of Brady.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 10, 2015

Brady to Boyce with a terrific ball deep down the middle of the field. Maybe the best connection of camp between QB & WR on a long pass.

— Christopher Price (@cpriceNFL) August 10, 2015

Nate Solder left the field with an apparent injury. He didn’t return.

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) August 10, 2015

Malcolm Butler making these big plays is incredibly encouraging. It appears like he and Tarrell Brown are the favorites to start on the outside, though I expect we’ll see everyone get a chance to show what they can do, even in January.

Let’s just keep an eye on Solder, that’s a big injury to monitor…

Tweets of Note from Friday’s Patriots Training Camp Practice

August 7, 2015 by Mike Dussault

Today was one of those practices where each new tweet seems to be bad information, with LeGarrette Blount suffering an injury that forced him to leave practice being the headline. And that wasn’t the only injury, on top of a total of 21 Patriots not practicing. Yes, the battle of attrition in camp is real and has a huge effect on who makes the team. Here are the tweets of note from Friday…

Patriots had 21 players not practicing today. New additions: Scott Chandler, Matt Wells, Eric Martin, and Jimmay Mundine.

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) August 7, 2015

Bryan Stork and Malcom Brown didn’t finish practice due to injuries. Blount went down earlier.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 7, 2015

#Patriots practice concludes. Sense we have hit “dog days” of camp. A bit lethargic for 3rd straight practice. 22 players absent (health).

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 7, 2015

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 7, 2015

And in a tackling drill later on in the afternoon, Collins threw Develin to the ground. One of the biggest and cleanest hits of the summer.

— Christopher Price (@cpriceNFL) August 7, 2015

Rookies Malcom Brown (pre sitting out), Jordan Richards, Darryl Roberts, Trey Flowers worked at times with guys thought to be 1st teamers.

Tweets of Note from Thursday Patriots Training Camp Practice

August 6, 2015 by Mike Dussault

The Pats were back at it on Thursday and the injuries are starting to pile up a bit, especially at the receiver position where Josh Boyce is now the top X receiver with LaFell and Dobson (minor hamstring) sitting out. As long as they’re not major, which even Tyms’ shoulder injury isn’t (per Jeff Howe), injuries can be a blessing because it forces other guys down the depth chart to get quality reps.

Here are the tweets of note from today’s practice…

Absent: JE11, Flynn, Slater, LaFell, Lewis, Gaffney, Fletcher, DFleming, CWhite, Cannon, Wendell, Hauptmann, Vellano, Tyms, ChrJones, Branch

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) August 6, 2015

Amendola made a great catch on a great Brady pass during 7s. He was covered by Roberts, Wilson & Richards and still came down with the ball

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) August 6, 2015

Dominique Easley flew through the line to make a play in 11-on-11s.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 6, 2015

Heavy focus on situations, including rushing FG team on field. Tavon Wilson INT of Garoppolo a highlight for D; Gronkowski from Brady for O.

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 6, 2015

Solid reps today for rookies Trey Flowers, Malcom Brown and Jordan Richards.

— Kevin Duffy (@KevinRDuffy) August 6, 2015

I had Josh Boyce down for seven catches in team drills today. He also went 3/3 during 1-on-1 &2-on-2 drills, beating Butler, Jean & Roberts

Tweets of Note From Patriots Training Camp: Tuesday 8/4

August 4, 2015 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots were back at it on Tuesday in full pads as the injuries are starting to open up some opportunities for other players and, unfortunately, we had our first player of the summer carted off. Hopefully it’s nothing too serious for Brian Tyms. Here are the tweets that stood out.

Absent from practice: Flynn, Slater, LaFell, Gaffney, White, Fletcher, Cannon, Wendell, Hauptmann, Vellano, Derby, Chris Jones and Branch

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ)

August 4, 2015

Malcolm Butler just made a leaping, diving interception off of Tom Brady on a pass for Josh Boyce. Butler continues making big plays.

— Erik Frenz (@ErikFrenz)

August 4, 2015

J. Edelman just walked into the field house. He was out here earlier, looked to be moving ok. But he tweaked right ankle/foot on Sunday.

— Derek Havens (@PatriotsHaven)

August 4, 2015

Tyms looks badly hurt during a 1-on-1 tackling drill. Getting carted off. Drill went on around him as he lay on the ground.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe)

August 4, 2015

With Edelman out, Amendola saw a lot of targets and made the most out of it. He looked good.

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ)

August 4, 2015

All he does is catch touchdowns. @DannyAmendola at #PatsCamp @Patriots pic.twitter.com/FdkhwuxCkp

— Josh Gross (@JoshuaBGross)

August 4, 2015

Defense had the edge again today. Held offense out of end zone on 3 straight goal line plays.

— Paul Perillo (@pfwpaul)

August 4, 2015

Players gather in big huddle at end of practice and Willie McGinest addresses them. Big cheer. #Patriots
