tommy kelly

August 18, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Jones wasn’t the only member of the defensive line to stand out. Despite not putting much on the stat sheet, newcomer Tommy Kelly also had a solid performance and deserves partial credit for linebacker Brandon Spikes’ first-quarter sack. Upon the snap, Kelly quickly turned to his right and consumed the right guard, which opened up a gap and provided Spikes a clear path to the backfield. After hitting the hole, Spikes blew over running back Doug Martin, who was out of position due to a poorly executed fake handoff, and took down Freeman.

Okay, I can admit Tommy Kelly is really getting me excited. He seems like he could be just the partner inside Vince Wilfork has been missing the last three seasons.

“You can’t single up on [us], especially with a guy like Tommy coming in – his size, and the speed he plays with,” Wilfork said. “The power that he plays with. His size in general. We’re both big guys, but he’s a lot taller than me. He’s longer than me. At the same time, he also brings some power. “He’s a good three-technique. Three, five, wherever we want to move him. That’s very, very good, because we can move him in different positions and move myself in different positions. It will make [it tougher for] our opponents to game plan against us.”

Biggest overall upgrade from last year to this one. Excited to see the difference he can make.

I think the Patriots capitalized on an unexpected opportunity on this one. They have been looking for help along the interior of the defensive line, and when the 32-year-old Kelly became available, it was probably the best combination of talent and value that they’ve explored over the last two years. I also wonder if Kelly’s mental errors and occasional lack of discipline were more about the environment in which he played, as Oakland has annually been one of the most penalized teams.

Probably the best role for Kelly with the Patriots will be as a situational pass rusher from the inside. That’s where his strength is at this point in his career, but that’s limited. He really needs to be singled up, and against weaker opponents. Kelly is pretty much a one move and then he’s done kind of guy. He gives his best shot and if there’s an opening, he pursues aggressively. If not, Kelly plays read and react. He does play to the whistle but his want-to depends on if he thinks he has an opening.

Tommy Kelly is one of the best defensive linemen in the league. He’s an outstanding player,” Belichick said at the time. “Kelly plays everywhere. He’s a little bit like Howie Long in that Howie Long was a guy that they would move along on the front. They would take Howie and mismatch him against whoever they thought the other team’s worst lineman was. There is a little bit of that with Tommy Kelly too, find a guy that they want to go after and stick him there because he does have the flexibility to play outside and inside. He can pretty much play across the board. He can do everything. Play the run, rush the passer, he’s good in pursuit. He’s a very physical player. He’s pretty good.

What are ten things up and coming coaches can take from belichick and use to be successful

That’s a tough question and I’m not even sure I’m qualified to truly answer it, but I’ll give it a shot. Specific keys to victory for each game – of course the hard part is identifying what makes the opposition tick, the few things that they do best and will sputter without, but keeping it […]
