Grading the Patriots vs. Broncos: New England goes nickel to stop Peyton Manning | masslive.com

Must-read as Nick Underhill grades the film…

All the stuff about Tom Brady struggling earlier in the year? Throw it out. The Pats QB has put together three consecutive solid performances now, and what he did against the Broncos may be his best showing of the year. With temperatures low enough to make you swear, which is likely what Manning did after several of his throws, Brady whipped the ball around the field like it was nothing. His performance in the third quarter was nothing short of stunning. After struggling to move the ball in the first half, he came out and completed 12-of-14 passes, throwing into the wind, for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Most of Brady’s damage was done over the short area over the middle of the field, though he did complete 12 passes outside the numbers. Brady was blitzed on nine attempts and completed eight of his passes.

The Patriots pull off a Comeback for the Ages. Belichick, just a few years after going for it on 4th & 2 from his own end because he couldn’t trust his defense to stop Manning, gives him the ball in OT and dares him to beat us. The Broncos get three touches after tying it up, any one of which could put the game away, and can’t close the Patriots out. Brady throws for more yards into a typhoon than Manning had all game. Against a Pats defense that’s missing two captains and a starting safety and is populated by rookies, undrafted free agents and guys hobbling around on bad legs. And more to the point, the Patriots fucking won. So what’s the takeaway across the country? How do the full time Manning apologists spin it? It was the weather. It was “a horribly unlucky play in overtime.”

I’ll give FoPP’er Jerry Thornton the final word on the Broncos game. Still a good chance we see these Broncos again, but it’s time to turn the page and focus on winning the last six games and wrapping up a first round bye, if not the number one seed.

It’s difficult sometimes for people to have close relationships and friendships when they are this high a level of competitors, but a lot of that changed when Tom Brady was hurt. The first call he got, or one of the first calls he got, was from Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning called several times after that. It kind of changed Tommy’s thoughts toward Peyton. And then when Peyton got hurt, Tommy reached out to him. The injury and the realization that their football mortality someday would end really changed the two and how they approach one another. They started sharing more information. And Tommy told me this week that one of the most interesting things was when Peyton Manning was getting ready to make a decision as to who he was going to sign with, he reached out to Tommy and wanted to exchange information, and he wanted to know what Tom thought would be a good idea for him to do. Amazing how this relationship has evolved over the years from two top competitors.

Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning: Round 14 – Stats & Info Blog – ESPN

Time to officially turn the page to the Broncos, arguably the marquee matchup of the NFL season, though both teams have been hit hard with injuries this season.

The big question is whether or not Aqib Talib is going to play. Dennard is already out. Kyle Arrington is fighting through a groin issue. If the Pats don’t have Talib it could get ugly.

All this led to speculation the Pats should sign Ras-I Dowling off the Jets’ practice squad. If Talib can’t go I’d be all for it. Otherwise it’s Logan Ryan and gimpy Arrington against the high-powered Broncos offense and oh boy…

At least if Talib can’t go, I pray Welker can’t either. Regardless Ninkovich, Chandler and the rest of the DL will need a big day to contain Manning and pals.

We’ll find out just how much grit this 2013 Pats team has Sunday night, that’s for sure.

I’ll be live-blogging tonight’s game so there won’t be much from me on the blog or twitter until afterwards. I’ll send up a link to the live blog once I’m up and running over there.

For now just this little bit of history being made tonight…

Tonight will be Brady’s 185th start under Belichick – most by a QB under 1 HC in @nfl history, passing Marino & Shula (184)

The important part for me in the offseason and for me during the season, I want to earn the respect of the guys that I play with today,” Brady said. “You don’t want to sit here and have your guys respect you for what you did 10 years ago. Those things aren’t important to me. What’s important is I show up every day to be a leader, to perform at a high level. There’s nothing more I love than to be around the stadium in the offseason, be around those guys running and lifting. That’s where you develop the camaraderie between everybody, that’s where you put the work in. …

Introducing the PatsPropaganda Forum

As you’ve probably noticed things have been slowly evolving here on the new version of the site and today I’ve added a forum where we can chat. After moving on from Tumblr one of the things I liked but lost was the ability to take and answer questions through their platform, so I’m hoping that […]
