tom brady

May 11, 2015 by Mike Dussault

The discipline is ridiculous and has no legitimate basis. In my opinion, this outcome was pre-determined; there was no fairness in the Wells investigation whatsoever. There is no evidence that Tom directed footballs be set at pressures below the allowable limits. In fact, the evidence shows Tom clearly emphasized that footballs be set at pressures within the rules. Tom also cooperated with the investigation and answered every question presented to him. The Wells Report presents significant evidence, however, that the NFL lacks standards or protocols with respect to its handling of footballs prior to games; this is not the fault of Tom or the Patriots. The report also presents significant evidence the NFL participated with the Colts in some type of pre-AFC Championship Game planning regarding the footballs. This fact may raise serious questions about the integrity of the games we view on Sundays. We will appeal, and if the hearing officer is completely independent and neutral, I am very confident the Wells Report will be exposed as an incredibly frail exercise in fact-finding and logic. The NFL has a well-documented history of making poor disciplinary decisions that often are overturned when truly independent and neutral judges or arbitrators preside, and a former federal judge has found the commissioner has abused his discretion in the past, so this outcome does not surprise me. Sadly, today’s decision diminishes the NFL as it tells its fans, players and coaches that the games on the field don’t count as much as the games played on Park Avenue.

Welp, here it is – Four-game suspension for Brady, $1 million fine for the Pats and they lose not only next year’s first rounder but also a fourth round pick in 2017 because who doesn’t want to still be talking about this in two years?

It goes without saying this goes above and beyond what I thought even the worst case scenario was. Brady will probably get his suspension knocked down a game or two, especially if Les Moonves complains about not having Brady for CBS’ Pats-Cowboys game.

How much of a surprise is this all really? The NFL continues to make worse and worse decisions and this time around they decided to go all in on punishing the Patriots.

Aside from the ridiculousness of the punishment and all the inconsistencies, what does this mean for the Patriots?

First, the question is can the Patriots beat the Steelers, Bills, Jags and Cowboys with Jimmy Garoppolo? Even if he only wins one of them it’s not an insurmountable hole. Let’s remember the Patriots always lose one or two stinkers in September anyway.

They lost Brady for the entire season in 2008 and it still came down to a tie breaker. So in answering the big question – does this hurt the 2015 Patriots’ chances at the Super Bowl – the answer is most probably no.

In the long term I see good and bad. Giving Garoppolo a chance now will certainly help his development. Especially against Rex Ryan in Buffalo, that will be a big challenge. But losing the first round draft pick again is certainly not a good thing.

The NFL does it again, should we really be surprised. The legend of the infamous Patriots only grows now. What a crazy, crazy trip.

A quarterback can only deflate a football so much. Eventually the ball becomes completely flat. No quarterback would choose to play with a completely flat ball. So why does the NFL have to tell Tom Brady how much (or little) air can be in the football when the laws of physics already do?

Just about every recent rules change in professional football has centered around making the game more comfortable for the offense. Fans want to see big gains and points. A ball that is easier to throw and easier to catch is a great avenue to this—and an avenue that in itself is not intrusive to the integrity of the game.

And there’s a very human element to this, and that is that the equipment managers largely toil in their jobs in anonymity,“ Yee continued. "And the next thing they know, the morning after the AFC championship game, there’s this giant spotlight on this matter involving their job. And Tom’s human. He’s very connected and very supportive of all the staff there. And for example, it was pointed out to all the lawyers, ‘Look, he’s just checking on their status, how they’re doing. These people are not used to being the subject of a national spotlight.’

So to give you one example, the report had spotlighted that Tom had autographed items for members of the equipment team. That’s a common practice. Unless you’re Rachel Nichols and you’ve been around sports your entire life and you know that’s a common practice, as opposed to being outside the sport of football and the culture of football, it’s not a distinction that people can easily grasp.
