Could The Red Pat Patriot Alternates Return?

Exciting news today that the Eagles have submitted a proposal that would allow teams to have a second helmet for alternate jerseys, which would mean the Patriots could return to wearing their old red throwbacks for the first time since 2012.

2017 Resolution Proposal 1. By Philadelphia, Amends the NFL’s On-Field Policy to allow clubs to have an alternate helmet in a color to match their third uniform.

This has been one of the more stupid rules on the books. You rarely see the NFL do something that would prevent themselves from making more money off of alternate jersey sales, but that’s just what this rule did. I think it was one of those shuffling the deck furniture moves back in 2013 when the NFL was trying to make it seem like they cared about concussions. That left only teams who had similar helmet colors/schemes using the alternate jerseys.

My creative solution before this proposal, and one I would still love to see, would be a return to the 90’s throwbacks. The Patriots could then still use the exact same helmet.

I’m a sucker for jerseys. I know it’s popular to hate on the color rush uniforms and many of them are terrible. But I loved the Patriots’ last season, and the more alternate jerseys they can wear the better. Let’s hope this one passes, though it probably won’t for some stupid reason on the NFL and its owners can come up with.

Love this flashback to the 90′s unis the Pats wear. I still have a reversible Drew Bledsoe jersey in this style and it was what I was wearing during Super Bowl 39. If you’ve noticed the Pats haven’t worn the red throwbacks since 2011 due to this:

A recommendation by the NFL’s Head, Neck and Spine Committee forbids teams from changing helmets during the season for safety reasons. A team may wear a throwback uniform, but the helmet must be the same one worn throughout the season.

That leaves teams with two options: wear the vintage uniform with a present day helmet or change the logo on the current helmet to the vintage.

It’s a rare instance of the NFL missing out on a chance to make money selling more jerseys. 

So why not bring back these 90s jerseys and then they can just keep the helmets they currently have?

The red throwback is the only Patriots jersey that I don’t own. I think I’m going to have to change that. SWAG HUNT!!

The New England Patriots will be wearing their 1985 throwbacks this week. Note that last year they wore the 50th anniversary throwbacks, so yes while they’ll be in red again this year there are differences.

First, the shoulder stripe colors are actually reversed, and the socks for the 1985 version are white. You’ll also see that the facemasks are white whereas last year the throwbacks had grey masks. Subtle differences, but I eat this stuff up.
