spygate

A look back at “NEInsider”, connecting Spygate to Deflategate

August 8, 2015 by Mike Dussault

Four years ago I put together this post about an ESPN messageboard poster calling themselves “NEInsider” who claimed to have a lot of inside knowledge that he shared. He didn’t make many posts, but he certainly seemed knowledgeable and well-spoken enough to consider he might actually be a New England Patriots insider.

Last night, @eomrules sent me this thread from PatsFans.com that reposted one of NEInsider’s posts that seems even more interesting now in retrospect. Remember this was posted many years ago, in the wake of Spygate.

The Kraft family was a Goodell supporter and will never openly criticize him but they are livid over the way Spygate was handled and the fact Goodell hung them out as “Cheaters” when he absolutely knew it never helped during a game and then on national TV aknowledged frivilous accusations like phone tampering etc. when he stated more punishment would be added if necessary instead of doing the right thing and stating such claims were baseless without proof since he knew we could never tamper with phones since we never knew what system or what frequency was availbale to us until game time.

This certainly raises the question of why did the Kraft’s decide to start trusting in Goodell again. Obviously Spygate happened very soon after Goodell first started so maybe they were just giving him a second chance?

I highly recommend you read the entire post, because it has a lot of interesting comments on Spygate, especially this one:

We taped defensive signals and offensive formation signals and we still have video of other teams taping us. They are of little value since no team uses the same signals even from game to game, quarter to quarter, and sometimes from series to series. We do it to FORCE the opposition to stay on thier toes and change signals hoping they mix up signals and have a bad play that results in a big play for us. There are no offensive signals only formation signals which are useless and they were taped at the same time as offensive signals and WERE possibly even on the Spygate tape. Any claims are baseless on this.

Again, this guy could be full of shit, but as you can see he doesn’t sound like your regular messageboard troll.

The guy is giving signals out in front of 80,000 people. OK? We filmed him taking signals out in front of 80,000 people like there were a lot of other teams doing at that time too, OK? Forget about that. If we were wrong, then we’ve been disciplined for that. "Guy’s in front of 80,000 people. Eighty-thousand people saw it, everybody’s sideline saw it, everybody sees our guy in front of 80,000 people. There he is. It was wrong, we were disciplined for it. That’s it. We never did it again. We’re never gonna do it again. Anything else that’s close we’re not gonna do, either.

This blew me away today, but it’s basically what Patriots fans have been waiting for BB to say for the last 7 years. Just so true, boiled down to what it really was. This moment was like a Gronk spike for me.

Epic Belichick Press Conference on Patriots’ internal Deflategate Investigation (and a Spygate reference too!)

Epic Belichick Press Conference on Patriots’ internal Deflategate Investigation (and a Spygate reference too!)

If you haven’t seen this yet, do it! I don’t know how I can make it another 8 days until the Super Bowl after watching this. The ball is now in the NFL’s court and, as I’ve said, unless they have a video of the Pats deflating a ball, I’m not sure how they can do much more than a fine.

The Belichick-Brady Legacy Is Defined by Wins, Not Tapes or Tucks | Bleacher Report

Sincerely doubt any of my readers need to read this, but it really sums up the truth about the Spygate thing better than anything else I’ve read in a while. So not to bring that whole thing up again, but it’s a nice dose of perspective.

townienews:

The ring belonging to the cameraman who got busted back in 2007, bringing about the whole “SpyGate” nightmare, is up for auction. And what I’m about to say is probably sacrilege, near heresy I imagine. But we need to buy it, and destroy it.

Think about it – this ring is cursed! We totally need to pool our collective funds, run a kickstarter, get a rich benefactor to step in and float us a few grand in return for “favors TBD” (gulp), buy this, and throw it into a volcano because, through no fault of his own, that hump got this whole damn mess started. Well, whether it works or not, I believe in this kinda magical hootenanny. Hell, they still bring goats to Cubs games, and Papi tried to bury a Sox jersey in the floor of Yankee Stadium just to fahk with them! To me this ring, as beautiful and majestical and Championshiperiffic as it should be, this one ring symbolizes all that has frustrated Pats fans and stirred up so much hate and spite and envy and vitriol and bitterness and other words that mean having to listen to “F the Pats!” and “18-1!” everywhere I go outside New England. It’s cursed, I tell you! And not all SB 39 rings; just this damned one! It was once beautiful, but now it has lost its way (thanks, Mangini, you Fredo-esque prick!) Therefore, it must be destroyed.

I’ll gladly be the one to stand atop a volcano, or a local garbage incinerator while playing the soundtrack to “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”, and make it so. Hey, gotta try something, right? Fan is short for “fanatic”, after all.

I’m in!! Can we raise $6700 in one day?

We didn’t lose the game because of any ‘Spygate,’ because of them having any additional things,” Cowher told 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday. “[If] they’re guilty of anything they’re guilty of arrogance because they were told not to do something but it was something everybody does. They got caught doing it with a camera. Stealing someone’s signals was a part of the game and everybody attempted to do that. We had people that always tried to steal signals. What happened when we lost that game is they outplayed us. It had nothing to do with stealing signals or cheating or anything else.

Bill Cowher dismisses impact of ‘Spygate’ – ESPN

I usually don’t do the Spygate dance anymore, but for this I just had to post it. Not that it will do anything to deter the tinfoil hat-wearing conspiracy theorists who have written entire books on the topic…

Please, spare me the comments about “Spygate.” Belichick’s regular-season winning percentage after the “Spygate” game on Sept. 9, 2007, is better (.790) than it was before (.670). And don’t talk about the Patriots’ recent playoff record (5-5 stretching back to 2007). In that same time span, New England has played in two more Super Bowls – an amazing feat in a league filled with parity and rife with potential pitfalls.

And now the final word on Brady “taunting” the Jets last time

And now the final word on Brady “taunting” the Jets last time This article (with pictures) sums it up pretty nicely. There are quite a few cliches that come to mind when this whole thing that went down: Pot calling the kettle black Live by the sword, die by sword People who live in glass […]
