Ross Tucker: Why the no huddle

Ross Tucker: Why the no huddle

I had been thinking about writing an article about the no huddle when I saw this one pop up today. The no huddle makes perfect sense for the Patriots. You have Brady. You have receivers that he trusts to make the right reads and get on the same page with him quickly. And they have they have the kind of versatile personnel that can run any kind of play.

Remember in 2009 when Rex Ryan had just taken over the Jets and the Patriots came out in week two running a no huddle with trainers and backups holding huge cards with play codes on them to try and get everyone on the same page? That’s what you have to do if you want to run the no huddle and you have Joey Galloway and rookie Julian Edelman instead of Deion Branch and Wes Welker.

As Eric Mangini said on WEEI last week the only way (repeat ONLY WAY) to get Brady off his game is confuse him. Because if he knows what you’re doing, you’re dead. The no huddle doesn’t give defenses time to confuse Brady. It doesn’t allow teams like the Jets to all be up walking around, disguising their intentions. They have enough to deal with just trying to get lined up and catch their breath.

I don’t know how much of the no huddle we’ll see in the coming games against the Bills and Raiders, but I know for sure we’ll see it a lot against the Jets.

“I equate it to the offense’s version of ‘blitzing’ the defense,” Saints coach Sean Payton said on Sirius XM NFL Radio on Monday morning, adding, “It allows the offense to change and dictate tempo, be unpredictable and thereby make the defense uncomfortable.”

Offensive coordinators are tired of trying to react to all of the different blitz variations that defensive coordinators concoct every week. They want to turn the tables and make the defenses adjust to what they are doing.

Here it is… the last time the Bills beat the Patriots. 2003 season opener. Lawyer Milloy debuts for the Bills just days after being released by the Patriots.

Is this the last time the Bills beat the Patriots? No this is 1968, and they’re playing at Fenway.

Time to turn the page. These guys aren’t going to be pushovers, they’ve been long since due to take one from the Pats, and they’re flying high right now. Plus they finally have some good looking uniforms.

Expecting this to be an all out aerial war. I just hope the Pats can figure out how to defend running backs catching passes out of the back field. Some many check downs vs. the Chargers picked up first downs. That can’t continue to happen especially with Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller.

News, notes and stats on the Pats

September 19, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Some quick hit items of interest from around the web.

Peter King: According to the film analysts at ProFootballFocus.com, who look at every one of a team’s offensive and defensive snaps, these are the formations used by New England in the 38-24 victory over Miami (first number, of course, the linemen, second number the linebackers, third the defensive backs): 3-3-5 ( used 22 times), 4-2-5 (20 times), 4-3-4 (15 times), 3-2-6 (14 times), 2-3-6 (4 times), 5-4-2 (once), 6-3-2 (once).

Mike Reiss offensive formation round up:

2 WR/2 TE/1 RB – 42 of 71
1 WR/3 TE/1 RB – 18 of 71
3 WR/1 TE/1 RB – 10 of 71
4 WR/1 TE – 1 of 71

Brady on the scary knee hit:

“I’m glad I had a knee brace on,” Brady said in his weekly appearance on Boston sports radio station WEEI. “Those are scary when you’ve been through those ones before. He got me in a good spot and I’m glad the knee brace took the brunt of the force. Why I never wore a knee brace before (his season-ending ACL injury in 2008) I have no idea and why every quarterback doesn’t wear one on their left knee I have no idea. It’s just so unprotected.”

Rapsheet on Chung’s injury:

Safety Patrick Chung left the game in the second quarter with an injury hand, and it looked like he was done. Except, Chung returned with a hard cast on his hand. Yup, he was playing. So, whatever the injury is, figure it won’t keep him out much more. But something was likely broken.

Numerous Reports on Aaron Hernandez:

Aaron Hernandez has a sprained MCL and will be out 1-2 weeks, according to a league source.
