September 10, 2013 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots have placed Shane Vereen on the injured reserve/designated to return list, meaning the running back will miss at least the next eight games.

Get ready for a lot of “when Vereen and Gronk get back….”

The Patriots running back broke his left wrist during his first snap against the Bills, will require surgery and miss at least four weeks while he recovers, according to a source. A second source told the Herald the Patriots had an idea Vereen would miss some time when they examined him yesterday. But the follow-up tests revealed the break, according to the first source.

Vereen to have wrist surgery

September 9, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Get ready for a shot at redemption, Ridley. And I’m sure we’ll see plenty of Leon Washington Thursday against his former team. What I wouldn’t give for Brandon Bolden to make a comeback soon.

Big hit for patriots, RB Shane Vereen broke a small bone in his wrist on 1st play yesterday, scheduled for surgery today. Out few weeks

Among the players worth closely monitoring is running back Shane Vereen, a third-year pro who has natural talent as a receiver. Like Hernandez, he has the ability be used in various alignments around the formation, opening the door to the Patriots using him as a pre-snap motion player. He might leapfrog from the backfield to a flexed out alignment to a wide receiver alignment in three successive plays. He was successfully used as a split wide receiver on occasion in 2012, taking advantage of man coverage against linebackers (a Thanksgiving night performance against the Jets was the pinnacle of his season). The Patriots have long excelled at dictating matchups, something they can explore further with Vereen this season.

Really hope Vereen stays healthy this season.

Thinking beyond just the statistical metrics, Vereen is an intriguing player for the Patriots offense, a unit that has undergone some turnover this offseason. He flashed at times during his second season, particularly as a pass-catcher with exceptional run-after-catch ability. Perhaps the biggest question entering the 2013 season is how the Patriots’ passing attack will adapt with Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd gone and Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez coming back from offseason surgeries.

I think as an offense we felt like we slipped up, especially at the end of the season, the way the season ended. Going into OTAs, that was our focus,” Vereen said, referring to the AFC Championship Game when the Patriots were held scoreless in the second half. “There is still a lot we need to work on, there are a lot of new faces, it’s still a younger offense, and so we have a lot of jelling to do. But I think we’re on the right track.
