New Look Patriots Face a Difficult Second Quarter of 2010

October 8, 2010 by Mike Dussault

We knew going into this season that a fast start would be essential for thePatriots to maintain their playoff hopes. Had they faltered like Miami did, losing 2 of 3 division games, it would be a long, hard road to get into the tournament.

I doubt there are many of us that wouldn’t have taken a 3-1 record if offered it before the season started. It hasn’t always been pretty, but as Bill Parcells said “you are what you are” and the Patriots are still in the division race.

The next four games against the Baltimore Ravens, San Diego Chargers,Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns are a daunting task. That’s three 2009 playoff teams, and a Browns team that are no longer pushovers.

LaCanfora: Strong Chance Mankins/VJax Report Anyway

LaCanfora: Strong Chance Mankins/VJax Report Anyway

Of course just after I post about the potential trade talk, The Can posts this about the language in the CBA making it likely they could be in the same situation next year if they don’t report. I think a trade still makes sense. Mankins and VJax have both had acrimonious holdouts. Why not give both of them a fresh start across the country from the teams they’ve been battling with?

Curran: Pats/Chargers Talking VJax for Mankins

File this in the “take it with a grain of salt” file considering Tom E’s usually hit or miss, but a Mankins for Vincent Jackson trade has to make sense for both clubs at this point. The problem is that the Chargers brass aren’t big fans of the Patriots. Just a couple years ago their entire personnel philosophy was based on beating the Pats so I’m sure they’re not exactly jumping up and down about giving a beast of a wide receiver in his prime to the Pats. Mankins would certainly make it a little easier.

RUMOR: Pats Interested in Vincent Jackson

September 20, 2010 by Mike Dussault

I can’t vouch for this guy but he seems to be a New York radio personality that had good sources when the whole Revis deal went down, and he’s saying that those same trusted sources are telling him the Pats are interested in Vincent Jackson.

You can see his twitter feed where he made the announcement here.

We had heard last year that the Pats have Vincent Jackson rated as their top wide receiver in the NFL (outside of Foxboro I assume) so it probably isn’t much of a secret that they think he’s a player.

The problem starts with Vincent Jackson wanting to be paid somewhere in the $9 million per year range while Randy Moss and Logan Mankins are already complaining about the Patriots and money. Don’t forget Wes Welker’s going to want a new deal pretty soon too. Not sure the Patriots could put together a compensation package that would attract Jackson, and if they did it might make waves in the locker room.

Clearly with seven picks in the first four rounds of the 2011 draft they could probably figure out a compensation package for the Chargers. Though San Diego would probably loathe sending him to New England.

On the field is the place it would make the most sense, especially if Randy Moss is gone after this year.

2006 AFCDG vs. SD Pregame

If you watched the highlight video of the Patriots-Chargers 2006 AFCDC these pictures will show you a little of what it was like to attend as a Patriots fan. Good times. Good times indeed.

Behold the greatest non-Steeler road playoff win of the Patriots dynasty. I was actually at this game, sitting about 14 rows behind the Patriots bench. After it was over the Patriots fans partied long and hard in the stadium while the Chargers fans fought eachother outside. It remains my greatest live fan experience, with the 2009 opener (Brady’s greatest career comeback) as a close second. Nothing can beat attending a road playoff upset win.

interesting list. i’d add georgia’s DT john jenkins to the list and north carolina’s G/C jonathan cooper. love the WR’s listed, i’d add hunter’s teammate cordarrelle patterson. i love his potential. never seen a guy with his size move like that. banks had a terrible end of the year and i’m not big on reid. elam is the top safety on my board for the pats. other safeties to look at are georgia’s bacarri rambo and shawn williams, south carolina’s dj swearinger, and fresno st.’s phillip thomas.

Thanks for sharing some insight. Usually I don’t do much draft research until after the Pats season ends, but it’s been fun to get my feet wet a little early this year.
