Ryan Mallet

May 21, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Heading into his third season, Ryan Mallett still seemed to be fighting some of the issues that have dogged him the last two years. He had trouble getting through his reads quickly enough at times, and also had a number of really inaccurate throws.

Patriots OTA observations from afar of players with no jersey numbers…

Working on a Brady replacement plan piece for Thursday, and this is a huge summer for Mallet. Not the start he’s looking for. If he wants a trade and extension he’s going to have to show something this preseason, otherwise he’ll back-up Brady in 2014 and then walk.

Wondering the same thing myself…

Agree or Disagree: Getting rid of Hoyer takes the training wheels off from under Mallet. Rodgers had to wait 3 years to get his turn. Mallet will (realistically) have 4. Brady has 3 more solid years, but then Mallet gets the role after 3 more solid years of drafting.

I agree that it takes the training wheels off of Mallet, but I wouldn’t automatically assume he’s going to beat Brady out in four years. Brady’s not giving up the job until it’s taken from him and I think it’s possible he can play at an elite level for at least another four years.

Mallet will have to continue to improve or else he could be gone before he even gets a chance to take the job from Brady. He certainly has an elite arm, but there have been plenty of QBs with elite arms that fail. It’s really the perfect situation right now for Mallet and he must take advantage of it and take note of how hard Brady is still working. If Mallet shows that kind of commitment it’s certainly possible that he’ll really start to push Brady in the next few seasons.

Ryan Mallett vs Eagles PS Game 2 (by JmpasqNFL)

Closer look at Mallet here. I think Mallet definitely has clear potential but the jury remains out for me if he’s ever going to put it all together. His arm strength is unquestionable and his ability to flick his wrist and get the ball out quickly will certainly help his lack of mobility.

As always with developing NFL quarterbacks, it’s just a matter of consistently making the right reads and sticking the throws in there. We might not see much of him on Friday as I expect Brady to get at least into the third quarter, but there’s clearly a reason we’ve seen more of Mallet so far than we’ve seen of Hoyer.

I think we all know what we’ve got with Hoyer. He’s pretty solid. And he’s probably going to walk next year. So they need to get a really good look at Mallet this preseason to determine if they think (with another season of practice of course) he’ll be ready to be Brady’s back up in 2013.

From what we’ve seen this preseason I’d say the jury is still out.

Five questions from Patriots camp – NFL – CBSSports.com News, Rumors, Scores, Stats, Fantasy

Kirwan nails the question marks around the team, but below is an interesting nugget about Mallet. One of the tough things about all the camp reports is that often a lot of them conflict. I’ve seen a few observations saying Mallet is slow in his reads and looks like he’s thinking too much. Well, below is what Kirwan saw for what it’s worth…

Mallett was impressive in the padded practice I watched. I can confirm that Mallett didn’t throw a bad pass in practice and spread the ball around with exceptional accuracy. The defensive players warned me before practice that Mallett was starting to stick the ball into tight spots with great velocity, accuracy and he understood where to go with the ball. Hoyer doesn’t have the same natural physical gifts that Mallett has but he can run this team if need be. It is safe to say the Patriots are better off at quarterback than most teams in the NFL.

Mini-camp observations, Day 1 – Extra Points – Boston.com

Mini-camp observations, Day 1 – Extra Points – Boston.com

As always, must read nuggets from Bedard. Should be interesting to watch Hoyer and Mallet this preseason. Here’s some notes on Mallet from today…

Mallett finished 7 of 15. He’s inconsistent. He threw a beautiful bomb to Julian Edelman for a touchdown over Alfonzo Dennard and Tavon Wilson, but Mallett also showed his trademark wildness with low throws and a few behind receivers. Mallett should have been intercepted by Sterling Moore. It appears the footwork drills he’s working on is affecting the consistency of his mechanics. It can be straightened out. Mallett also seems to be very cognizant of getting rid of the ball in practice. He had about four throwaways. Mallett often held onto the ball too long in the preseason last year. Quicker decision-making appears to be a coaching point this offseason, as it should be.
