Ryan Kerrigan

December 7, 2011 by Mike Dussault

A lot of Patriots fans liked Ryan Kerrigan heading into this year’s draft including FOPP’er Kristin over at The Foxhole, with the people who were writing him off (like yours truly) unconvinced he could play OLB in the 3-4 defense. Of course the Patriots ended up going to primarily a 4-3 defense this year and then Nick Caserio drops this nugget today:

Ryan can play in any system. Good football player, tough, smart, instinctive, strong, disruptive player, causes a number of fumbles, which he’s caused four [of] to this point in this season for the Redskins. He can play in any defense. It doesn’t matter what front you’re playing, what defense you’re playing; he can probably play in any of them.

So uh, yeah…

At least it will be good to see the young pass rusher this weekend, hopefully it’s just not in our backfield or anywhere near TFB.

I’ve had quite a strange journey on Ryan Kerrigan over the three plus months of draft prep. At first he was immediately a very interesting prospect but as I heard more and more it appeared that a lot of people thought he was better suited for a 4-3.

But then he had a combine where he looked better and more agile in space than people had thought, and now I’m reading things about how he doesn’t have the ability to anchor from a 4-3 defensive end position in the run game and is better suited for a 3-4.

Who knows what is true, this is all I can say. This guy has the size. He can get after the quarterback. He seems the most level headed of any of the OLB prospects I’ve heard talk. And lastly, and most importantly, he wears a headband like Tom Brady does.

Consider me back on the Kerrigan bandwagon, I’d love to see him end up on the Pats. If he ends up being a bust it won’t be due to lack of effort.

Potential Patriots: Ryan Kerrigan

February 12, 2011 by Mike Dussault

For the second year in the row everyone is wondering if the Patriots will alter their philosophy of only taking three down players in the first round to take a pass rushing DE/OLB conversion project.

Last year Jerry Hughes was that guy I was kinda hoping they pick. Which in hindsight was obviously the wrongest choice they could’ve made.

This year the sexy pass rushing pick has got to be Ryan Kerrigan.

The only knock on him is that he might be more suited to play in a 4-3 defense where he’s not asked to play in space or cover tight ends.

So schematically he might not be a perfect fit for the Pats, especially early in the draft as it would probably take him longer to develop into a run defender than it did for Jermaine Cunningham.

But right off the bat he’s bringing a non-stop motor, excellent leadership and attitude. He looks like he has the size and speed to get to the quarterback, a need the Pats desperately have.

So if he’s there at 17, do they take him? Watch the video below and I guarantee your answer is yes!

I was wondering if you could go a little more in depth about belichick stopping what opponents do best. Do you think he goes by players or situations. Why does when he go against a team he limits what he wants (to a degree) work compared to other teams.

I think it’s both players and situations. For example, I think he asks his defensive ends to be far more conservative against mobile QBs than most teams are. BB seems far more willing to challenge a quarterback to beat him with his arm than most coaches do. The result that we’ve often seen is that […]
