CSNNE/Curran: Breaking down Patriots with NFL Films’ Greg Cosell

June 1, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Great stuff here and here from Tom E. Curran over the past couple days and it looks like there will be even more coming. Here are some of Cosell’s most interesting Patriots observations:

On Brandon Tate

GC: Very often, the way players are used tells you how a coaching staff feels about them. The way the Patriots use Brandon Tate tells that they don’t think much of him at this point. He runs about three routes and the only time the ball comes to him is when a play is specifically called for him. In terms of physical ability, he’s very good. If you look at the skill set of a wideout, he has it. He’s big, he runs well, he’s got good lateral quickness. But in taking the spot of Randy Moss, he was stepping in for someone who was as good a vertical receiver as we’ve ever seen. Tate has vertical skills but not Randy Moss vertical skills and that’s why coverage was different for Tate after Moss left. I also think Tate’s hands can be erratic That can’t happen with the few plays they run for him. They just don’t feel he was ready last year. And he’s the kind of guy getting killed by the work stoppage. He really needed this offseason.

Two things to add here… Randy Moss was really only running one route at the end of his Patriots tenure, and Tate should clearly benefit from having a year in the system. Still Cosell is right, the lockout is killing guys like him and Taylor Price.

GC: “Reading the defense before the snap is critical for all quarterbacks. Tom Brady, (Peyton) Manning, (Drew) Brees and (Aaron) Rodgers are the best in football at deciphering the personnel packages and the favorable matchups that are there to take advantage of. The magic with Brady happens before the ball is snapped. With all the Patriots’ personnel packages and multi-dimensional tight ends, it makes it difficult for a defense. It makes them declare their personnel and their coverages and when they declare, that’s when quarterbacks like Brady have the advantage."

“You try and match what OTA’s would be like at this point, try and get out there and running on the field and throwing and working drills as well as lifting,” said Fletcher, who lined up at multiple linebacker spots last season. “Just do as much as you can do to be on top and try to stay on top of things.”

“There are definitely people out there grinding. I’m working out a lot, throwing — Fletcher and I, we’re always out there grinding every day about five times a week,” Gronkowski said. “We’re just ready to play some football and hoping there’s a season. I’m ready to play.”

Worth mentioning that Chris Price said in a tweet that Fletcher looked like he had put on some good weight. Really hoping we have a training camp so he can have a chance to show how much he’s improved. Working out with Gronk certainly has to help.

Football Times: Three Tight Ends the next revolution in football?

Football Times: Three Tight Ends the next revolution in football?

Well this sure is an interesting article, especially when you look at the tight ends the Patriots will have on their roster this year. As always, BB ahead of the curve…

Football evolution is such that tight ends are becoming more prominent. The last great offensive system craze was the “west coast offense”. It was countered by teams running versions of the “cover two”. The answer to the cover two isn’t so much a scheme, but a position. Tight ends are designed to operate in the seam, which is the weak area of the cover two systems.

Most tight ends either block well or catch well, but all have to do both to some extent. Can’t block?  You’d better be a darn good catcher or you can’t be a receiver. Can’t catch? You’d better be a darn good blocker or you won’t get on a team as an offensive lineman. The few tight ends who do both exceedingly well are a danger to any team. Few things scare a defensive coach more than having to guess if the tight end is blocking or going out for a pass. It can’t be schemed for, because you can only guess. The guessing becomes a nightmare when two or three solid tight ends are on a team.

Mark my words: the tight end is the wave of the future in the NFL. It started a couple of years ago, and is gaining in momentum.

Patriots players work out quietly, carry big stick

May 11, 2011 by Mike Dussault

There’s been a lot of my fellow Patriots die hards out there who were concerned that it appeared that the Jets were the only team that was making an effort to organize workouts during the lockout.

Yes, Mark Sanchez has put together a highly-publicized Jets West camp in California, complete with full media attendance, water balloon toss contests, Ipad giveaways and even a snazzy logo…

Well news comes today from Mike Reiss, who apparently had to press Rob Gronkowski pretty hard, that the Patriots are doing some team activities of their own, they’re just not making a public spectacle out of it.

“We’ve been doing everything, but we’re on the down-low,” second-year tight end Rob Gronkowski said Tuesday night. “[Others teams] may go to the media, acting like they’re some of the only teams doing it, but we’re working hard out here too. We’re just keeping it low.”

“We are intense. The workouts are insane,” he relayed. “We’ve been getting after it hard. I feel great right now, ready to go.”

Now we hit on the differences between the standard operating procedures between the Patriots and Jets plenty of times, especially last year when we got a glimpse inside Rexy’s domain via Hard Knocks.

There’s no secret that the Jets like to keep things a little more loosey-goosey than the Pats do, and who knows maybe that played a part in why they were able to put 45-3 behind them and defeat the Pats in the playoffs.

But the fact is that the Patriots aren’t just sitting around eating bon bons,  watching the Jets all become BFFs with matching Ipads while waiting for the lockout to end. They’re getting after it and will be ready to go whenever the season starts.

Patriots Draft Flashback: Rob Gronkowski

Possibly the greatest draft performance ever by a just picked player. Who would’ve known that Gronk would almost single-handedly change the Patriots offense.

Ninkovich steps up and ends it. Did you really think it would come any other way? Forced Jets mistake. Ballgame.  Credit to Brady in crunch time, he delivered two drives to save and win the game and that counts for a lot. Especially on a day when his receivers were dropping balls. As for the […]
