Anatomy of Draft Value: What became of the Patriots 2007 28th overall pick?

May 3, 2011 by Mike Dussault

As the first round of the 2007 NFL draft wound down, the New England Patriots still had needs to fill. They had just lost in the AFC Championship in disappointing fashion to the Indianapolis Colts and the fans across Patriots nation were calling for more weapons to surround Tom Brady with.

The Pats had already taken safety Brandon Meriweather with the 24th overall pick that they had gotten for Deion Branch, and now could have their choice of any of the wide receivers who were about to be drafted in the next 18 picks: Anthony Gonzalez, Craig “Buster” Davis, Sidney Rice, or Dwayne Jarrett.

Instead the Patriots did what they almost always do, they traded down and began a journey of value returns from that pick that would continue through the next four drafts.

The initial trade was with San Francisco and gave the Patriots a 1st round pick the following year, as well as a 4th rounder in 2007 (110th overall). These two picks would net the Pats two star players.

The 2008 first rounder pick ended up getting traded down from 7th overall to 10th overall, netting the Patriots future defensive captain Jerod Mayo and future PatsPropaganda boo Shawn Crable. While a bust, Crable did give the “We Need Pass Rush!” crowd a glimmer of hope for a few seasons.

But it was the 2007 110th overall pick that would end up making history for the Pats. They flipped that 4th round selection to the Raiders for Randy Moss and we all know how that ended up going. Moss set the receiving TD record in 2007, and closed out a four year Patriots stint with 50 total touchdowns.

In 2010 the Patriots traded Moss to the Vikings in exchange for a 2011 3rd round selection, which ended up being the 74th overall pick where they took QB Ryan Mallett. Who knows what Mallett’s career with the Patriots will hold, but with him carries the legacy of the 2007 28th overall pick.

So to sum up the Patriots have thus far gotten the following out of that first round selection that they chose to trade to the 49ers who took Joe Staley with it:

  • Randy Moss
  • Jerod Mayo
  • Shawn Crable
  • Ryan Mallett
  • 2016 6th Round Pick (for Mallett via Houston)

That is what value drafting is all about.

Alright, let’s kick off Steelers week with this little play from 2007, which is arguably the greatest touchdown of the epic 2007 season. The fact that it just happened to be over that Steeler safety (purposely not mentioning his real name since I don’t remember it and don’t care enough to go look it up because he’s a jerkhole) who had predicted victory for the Squealers, was just the icing on the cake.

I should also point out that I was at this game and it was a certain pregame incident (more to come on that later) that inspired me to begin blogging, which has of course resulted in me making literally tens of dollars.

I was actually in the very last row of Gillette for this one, overdressed so I was comfortably warm (and numb I might add, thanks Kevin!), as a drunk girl next to us somehow peed on the upper wall of the stadium (don’t ask cause I don’t know). But from way up there it was amazing to watch this play develop.

I actually expect similar type misdirection and trickeration this weekend. The Steelers have an attacking defense and if you can fool them and get them out of position, you could be looking at a big play.

Randy Moss to the Jets? Yes, please…

November 3, 2010 by Mike Dussault

First off let me say that the chances of Randy Moss ending up on the Jets is slim to none. First we heard reports that Moss spent Tuesday with Jets players, then the Jet said they hadn’t put in a claim on him which of course doesn’t rule out the Jets signing him if he goes unclaimed.

But let me just say as a Patriots fan I’m all for Moss going to the Jets. In some ways I think he’s more effective for the Patriots if he’s on the Jets than if he was still on New England.

Why? Because Moss’ skill set is similar to that of both Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards. All are supposed to be “deep threats”, though Moss is the only one of the trio with reliable hands. But Mark Sanchez’s accuracy problems are well documented, and he’s already having problems trying to spread the ball to everyone. What’s the use of having three guys who all basically do the same thing?

Basically with Moss in the fold you’re looking at three volatile wide receivers, all on one-year “prove it” deals, with a quarterback who’s going to struggle enabling any of them to “prove it”. And I’m sure Holmes and Edwards would have no problem seeing their playing time reduced so old nemesis Moss can get in the game, right?

So yes, at the end of the day Moss probably isn’t going to end up on the Jets. He’d have to go unclaimed, then choose to go to them. But if he did it would be like adding plutonium to a concoction that already contains gasoline and plenty of matches. So this Patriots fan says “YES PLEASE!”/

No Chance Moss Comes Back to Pats

November 2, 2010 by Mike Dussault

I’ve been surprised to see how much buzz “Moss Back To Pats” is generating. Of course it’s all speculation, especially since Moss seemed to miss New England so much during his post game press conference.

But why did New England get rid of Moss in the first place? Was it just so they could get a 3rd round pick instead of nothing if we walked as a free agent? Or was it to eliminate a growing distraction from their locker room?

I think both of these factors played into the decision to trade Moss but possibly the biggest factor was the fact that the Patriots offense is evolving into a team that no longer wanted or needed Moss.

Yes Moss is a deep threat who pulls coverage, but as we’ve seen a lot of times that’s just about all he does. The Patriots won quite a few games with Moss doing just that, sometimes without Moss making a significant or meaningful catch.

But the time had come to evolve on offense, and as we’ve seen over the last three games the Patriots haven’t exactly missed Moss as much as he misses them.

Everyone loves a coming home story like the one we had with Deion Branch, but the option of brining back Randy Moss makes zero sense at this point.

What message would that send to the Patriots organization? It would make it seem as if they only traded him so they could get some kind of compensation for him. While that might’ve been a factor, it was probably the smallest factor of them all.

Or do they suddenly think that all the Randy Moss distractions are behind him? I doubt it. I loved watching Moss, but he was high maintenance both on and off the field, and the Patriots team now feels more cohesive without him.

The Randy Moss era with the New England Patriots is over. We can appreciate all the great things he did, but we’re never going back. Even if no one else wants him.

Agree or Disagree: Getting rid of Hoyer takes the training wheels off from under Mallet. Rodgers had to wait 3 years to get his turn. Mallet will (realistically) have 4. Brady has 3 more solid years, but then Mallet gets the role after 3 more solid years of drafting.

I agree that it takes the training wheels off of Mallet, but I wouldn’t automatically assume he’s going to beat Brady out in four years. Brady’s not giving up the job until it’s taken from him and I think it’s possible he can play at an elite level for at least another four years. Mallet […]
