PatsProp Preview – Brady Comes Home

October 2, 2021 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

(AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

Well, this is the one we’ve all been waiting for, the New England Patriots take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as Tom Brady returns home. If you have any nails left, save them for tomorrow, it’s going to be an experience never to forget.

One’s To Watch

Mac Jones

Tomorrow night will be an experience like no other for Jones, but hopefully, among all of the craziness, he’ll be able to slip under the radar and have a solid game. The Patriots need Jones to have a better performance, but to allow that, they need to do a better job protecting him. Jones won’t have James White as a pass-catching option, so he’ll need to focus more on Meyers and his tight-ends. As always, Jones is one to watch.

J.C. Jackson

Jackson like every week so far this season will be the starting cornerback for the team and will need to be locked in if he’s gonna pick off Brady. Jackson has been impressive in the first few weeks, again, with his contract up in the air, a strong game covering Godwin/Evans will help his cause.

Jakobi Meyers

After hauling in 9 catches for 94 yards against the Saints, Meyers will now shift to Jones’ safety blanket option following James White’s injury. Meyers’ rise continues and whilst he isn’t an explosive-type player, he’s reliable and will be an important piece this week against the Bucs.

Christian Barmore

In the build-up to this game, much was talked about how the Patriots need to disrupt Brady through the middle, as in previous games where Brady lost, that pressure in the middle contributed to the loss. I agree, and I think Barmore is the player for that role, he’s shown the ability to cause disruption so far this season, he’ll be worth watching tomorrow night.

The Brady Bunch

Who for the Bucs could cause problems for the Patriots?

Tom Brady

You all know why this man is a danger, the greatest of all time, looking to beat the Patriots for the first time.

PatsProp Preview – Here Come The Saints

September 25, 2021 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

The Patriots are back in Foxboro for the first of two straight home games, starting tomorrow against the New Orleans Saints. Here’s your Week 3 PatsProp preview!

One’s To Watch

J.C. Jackson

Jackson snagged two picks last week against Zach Wilson, so he should be licking his chops coming up against Jameis Winston tomorrow, who we all know has the tendency to provide turnovers. Jackson is a pending FA at the end of the season and he’s playing like he has something to prove, he should be a fun watch once again.

James White

Jimmy White looked as if he was back to his best last week against the Jets, something which he was unable to do last season as his connection with Cam Newton never materialized. Mac Jones likes to use the check down a bunch, and I expect it to be no different tomorrow as he continues his partnership with White.

Matt Judon

Judon had a quiet game last week and didn’t really stand out like I thought he would. He also appeared on the injury report this week but has managed to work through his ailment and will be raring to go. With Winston’s ability to catch fire in the passing game, Judon getting pressure on him will be vital for the Patriots. Look out for him on the edge tomorrow.

Isaiah Wynn

Wynn has been really lackluster in the opening few weeks, mistakes, penalties, and generally, his poor play has me a little worried. The Saints can bring pressure and the Patriots need him to be better. Whilst the right tackle spot is a concern also, keep an eye on the left side.

Christian Barmore

I’ve been really impressed with how Barmore has started for the team, and I think he will only continue to get better. More of a pass-rushing threat than against the run, I’m interested to see the rookie work more tomorrow against a good Saints offensive front.

When The Saints Go Marching In

Who for New Orleans could potentially cause problems for the Patriots?

Cam Jordan

The former six-time Pro Bowler will be key for the Saints as they head into Foxboro tomorrow. Jordan, who’s just 5.5 sacks away from reaching 100 for his career, is a big area of concern given how leaky the Pats offensive front has looked through the first couple of weeks. If the Patriots can stop Jordan, it will make their day passing the ball a lot easier.

Alvin Kamara

This is obvious, but they have to stop Kamara tomorrow. The Pats have been disappointing in preventing the run so far this season, despite bolstering their defensive front in free agency. Kamara’s ability is undisputed, but he’s had a slow start this season by his own standards.

If the Patriots can limit Kamara’s production tomorrow, their chances of winning skyrocket.

Jameis Winston

Winston is such an interesting player to watch because you don’t know what QB you’re going to get from week to week. He’ll either turn up as a top-10 player, throw for 400 yards and/or 4 TD’s, or, he’ll throw you multiple interceptions, there usually isn’t much in-between. If he turns up, it could be an interesting game for sure.

Patriots Preview: Week 17 vs NY Jets

January 1, 2021 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

A formality game to end a disappointing season for Patriots fans. Whilst some will be hoping that the team does indeed lose against the Jets, to get a higher pick in the Draft, Bill will send out those who are healthy to try and win a game of football on Sunday.

Date: Sunday, January 3, 2021
Game Time: 13:00 EST
Venue: Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA
Network: CBS
All-time record: Patriots lead series 68-54-1

How The Patriots Win

Almost two months on since these sides last met in November, the Jets have won a couple of games in a row and are no longer in the picture to draft Trevor Lawrence. And, with that now confirmed, the Patriots could very easily lose this game.

Firstly, they’ll need to make Sam Darnold, who, has looked good in recent weeks and was absent when these teams met earlier in the season. Pressure Darnold, force some mistakes and don’t let their passing game garner any consistency.

The Jets will be without future HOF’er Frank Gore, who’s out with a lung problem and La’Mical Perine, who tested positive for COVID-19. Usually a team would take some reassurance by this news, but given how bad the the Pats run defense has been this season, I still think backups Ty Johnson and Josh Adams can still deliver damage. If they want to win, they’ve got to contain these backs.

With no word on any change to the quarterback position for Sunday, I assume Newton will start in his final contractual game for the Patriots. If so, please go out with a bang and just try and make some plays through the air. Away from Cam, I think Jakobi Meyers is key to getting the W on Sunday, he’s been one of the most reliable offensive weapons this season, he is the passing game.

Whether it’ll be Damien Harris or Sony Michel leading the backfield on Sunday, they’ll need to run the ball well to put themselves into position to score points, with how bad the passing game has been, running the ball will be key.

TSM’s 5 Keys To Victory-
-Pressure Darnold
-Stop Jets backup RB group
-Cam goes out with a bang
-Jakobi Meyers
-Running the ball

Patriots Preview: Week 15 vs Miami Dolphins

December 17, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

On Sunday night, the 6-7 New England Patriots travel to Hard Rock Stadium to take on the 8-5 Miami Dolphins.

Date: Sunday, December 20, 2020
Game Time: 13:00 PM EST
Venue: Hard Rock Stadium
Network: CBS
All-time record: Dolphins lead series 56-54 (including playoffs)

How The Patriots Win

Since the Patriots beat the Dolphins in the season opener back in September, Flores has got Miami playing some good football, especially on defense. So let’s look at how they can beat them.

BALL SECURITY PLEASE!- I just want no pick-sixes or fumbles on Sunday. They go one, sometimes two (if they’re lucky) games without giving up turnovers, then fall back and cost themselves, it just kills any chance of victory in the game, especially when the offense can’t pull out comeback wins like the past.

I personally don’t think Miami’s offense has been great, however, I do think the game is more intriguing now Tua is the starting QB. He’s been really safe with the ball so far in his early career- having thrown only one interception. After making Justin Herbert uncomfortable in the scorching the Patriots gave the Chargers a couple of weeks ago, if the defense can do the same thing to Tua on Sunday, it’ll give an ailing Patriots offense a chance.

Run the ball, get it going, and don’t stop. I’ve given up hope that we’ll see a passing performance like the Seahawks/Texans game’s earlier this season, but, the most consistent offensive production has come on the ground. I don’t care if Harris does all the work and Newton pounds it in from the one, just get the points in the red zone.

Special Teams has bailed this team out so many times this season, I think they’ll play a part on Sunday again, further consistency needed.

TSM’s 5 Keys To Victory-
-0 Turnovers
-Pressure Tagovailoa
-Run, Run, Run
-Make red zone chances count
-Special Teams consistency

Date: Thursday, December 10, 2020

Venue: SOFI Stadium, LA

When They Last Met…

Patriots 13-3 Rams

Super Bowl LIII

Yes, that’s right, the last time these team’s faced off was in Atlanta at Super Bowl LIII.

The Rams made it to the Championship Game in dubious circumstances following the NFC Championship game against the Saints and that infamous PI no call. The Patriots on the other hand needed overtime to see the Chiefs in one of the best football games I’ve ever seen.

The Pats got off to a bad start on their first drive as Tom Brady’s pass intended for Chris Hogan was intercepted by Corey Littleton. Patriots then got the ball back and put together a nice drive before stalling, Stephen Gostkowski’s field goal went wide left.

With Tom Brady serving the first of his four-game suspension for his role in “Deflategate”, Jimmy Garoppolo started in his place.

It didn’t take long for him to get off to the perfect start, on the Patriots first drive, Garoppolo saw Chris Hogan open deep and found him for a 37-yard touchdown.
