Piecing together puzzle in secondary – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

I’m really enjoying Field Yates’ experienced football perspective on ESPN Boston. This is a good breakdown of what the Pats have in their secondary. Hard to project who’s going to be where, injuries and competition will sort that out, but you have to like the amount of versatility and potential that they have.

Pats’ second effort pays off – BostonHerald.com

Interesting take here from Jeff Howe at his new Herald digs. I really see the sky as the limit for this defense with all the talent they’ve stockpiled, but there will he hard decisions to make. Obviously Mayo is part of the core and was given another contract. But after him who are the real building blocks that will also get another deal from the Pats?

There jury is still out on a lot of their young defenders, but after this year we’ll start to see who they want to build around and who they don’t.

Patriots – One opposing scout offers his take on the Patriots’ offseason moves – WEEI | Christopher Price

Good stuff in this article from Chris Price. Will Allen could really address the issues the Pats have had at slot corner over the past few seasons. It was better in 2011 (they were destroyed by #1 WRs) but Allen can do a number of things and that will make him extremely useful.

The [Will] Allen signing was a relatively under-the-radar pickup, but it appears that some around the league view the 33-year-old as a high-quality addition. He’s certainly developed a rep as a good slot corner in recent years – according to Pro Football Focus, he was in the slot for 419 snaps last season in Miami (tops in the league) and he yielded 0.81 yards per coverage snap for 3rd best in the league among slot corners. In addition, he allowed a catch once every 11.6 coverage snaps, a rate that was sixth best in the league at the position.

What Josh brings to the table week-in and week-out is creativity. Not saying that Billy O’Brien the last couple of years hasn’t, it’s just to a different level. New schemes, really week-in and week-out, really digesting the playbook on how to beat the opposing defense. And if you look at what Josh McDaniels does great, which we did a lot under his stay there, the screen game,” Evans explained. “It helps your run game, it helps your deep, down-the-field pass game. Josh McDaniels is just magical at calling them at the right time, setting them up versus the right defense, and that’s where this offense will get better.

Debating Which Patriots Defender Is Most Key to New England Defensive Turnaround | Bleacher Report

Good stuff here from Nick and Frenz, but yeah if I had to pick one thing that would make the biggest difference for the Pats secondary? A full season

Don’t Stop Frontin’: The Mind-Boggling Multiplicity of NFL Defenses « Grantland Good read, even if there isn’t a single mention of the Patriots, one the originators of the multiple front defense. As I’ve been saying for years, 3-4 vs. 4-3 is just semantics now, those vanilla defenses are just too easy for modern offenses to […]
