King pegs New England as the best fit for three of his other top 50 free agents: safety Ed Reed (42), tight end James Casey (41), and defensive end Osi Umenyiora (19).

The position I keep hearing most associated with the Patriots in free agency — and, because of the length of time between the combine and the start of free agency March 12, it’s not as loud as in past years — is defensive end. According to league sources, the Patriots would have gotten in on Bengals end Michael Johnson, but he was wisely tagged by the Bengals. He’s a 6-foot-7-inch, 270-pound athletic freak who had 4.6 speed but slipped to the third round in the 2009 draft because of questions about his work ethic and injury history. The 26-year-old had 11.5 sacks in his contract year. Even if Johnson hadn’t been franchised, two personnel executives I talked to didn’t think the Patriots would have had nearly enough money to land Johnson, which is why Colts end Dwight Freeney or some other veteran such as John Abraham of the Falcons might make more economic sense.

Interesting, my biggest question is if they bring in a defensive end is it just to be a situational rusher? Or is he going to eat in Ninkovich and/or Jones’ snaps? In my outside opinion it’s a far better investment to go after a Kyle Love/Brandon Deaderick upgrade, and go for a veteran on a near-minimum deal for the DPR spot like they’ve done with Andre Carter/Mark Anderson/Trevor Scott over the last two years.

Patriots offseason primer: After Ravens loss, expect a frenzy – Patriots – Boston.com

Great stuff throughout this one from Bedard, including:

Odds are against Brandon Lloyd’s $3 million option bonus being picked up. There is still a lot of internal debate about what to do considering the Patriots literally couldn’t line up tomorrow at receiver. Lloyd’s erratic behavior in the locker room and on the practice field proved tiresome, according to a league and team source. If they cut Lloyd, that would save the Patriots $4.9 million against the cap this season, though there will be $2 million in dead money that can be spread out over two years. The team was smart to build in protection with Lloyd.

Chasing The Patriots (by ESPN)

Every move the Dolphins make this off-season should be geared toward beating the Patriots.  I think they should pursue athletic tight ends to really attack the Patriots linebackers in coverage. That’s where they’ve been weakest over the past three seasons.

The Best of PatsPropaganda This Week

February 16, 2013 by Mike Dussault

The offseason rolls on with the scouting combine (aka underwear olympics) next week and the new league year starting just three weeks from this Tuesday. Yes, it’s the bleakest part of the offseason but there was still plenty of good Patriots reading out there this week. The best of it:

Pros and cons for Franchising Welker, Talib or Vollmer. Personally I don’t think they use it on any of them.

how high a pick would you be willing to use on a designated pass rusher?

Well, here’s where me and Coach BB disagree, I think, but I’d use a first rounder if the right guy is there with the explosion and array of moves necessary to win as a pass rusher in the NFL. Here’s my argument, BB has said that the nickel corner is essentially considered a starter now. […]
