Defense remains the concern for Patriots

August 13, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Been beating this drum for a while, but with each passing day I’m less concerned about the Patriots offense and more concerned about the defense. Between the three rookie wide receivers, the running backs, Zach Sudfeld and Jake Ballard (and eventually Gronk), the offense is going to be just fine.

But in both the game against the Eagles and practice today against the Bucs, the Pats continue to get shredded through the air. Now, I realize it’s just preseason, and I never overreact to preseason, but I am concerned.

Injuries are mounting at cornerback where Alfonzo Dennard and Ras-I Dowling are still just watching practice. Logan Ryan has been thrust into a major role and we’re not even two weeks into August. Kyle Arrington is back on the outside. McCourty has moved back to corner for significant periods of time. Rookie Duron Harmon is getting a long look at safety.

What does all this add up to? A lot of uncertainty and inexperience in the secondary. For all the talk of continuity on the defense this season, things are starting to look a lot less continuous.

Now the good news is that the front seven is still intact, and despite razor-thin depth behind Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly, they should be able to ease some growing pains on the back end of the defense.

But it is critical that Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich and Marcus Benard are able to bring consistent pass rush pressure.

It’s an exciting time for the offense. There are a lot of new players making big plays, and consistently standing out. However, the defense has been sidetracked by injuries, and the results have lately looked a lot like the last two seasons.

There’s plenty of time for the defense to get healthy and gel, and obviously, the strength of a Bill Belichick defense is in their game planning and disguise; things we won’t see in preseason.

But the next two games will be critical for the defense to make some strides.

Thursday Patriots Tweets of Note

August 8, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Collection of tweets as the national media gets their first look at the 2013 Pats…

The Patriots offense was the biggest surprise of my training camp tour. Despite several key losses, they were very crisp. #Brady

— Daniel Jeremiah (@MoveTheSticks) August 8, 2013

Practice over. Every drill done at half speed. Felt like Brady threw every single pass at Sudfeld

— Ben Volin (@BenVolin) August 8, 2013

First time I ever remember seeing four safeties on the field at once – McCourty, Gregory, Harmon and Adrian Wilson.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 8, 2013

RT @adamrank: Our @albertbreer says Kenbrell Thompkins is a receiver to watch in New England. > So does our @MoveTheSticks

Tweets of Note from Wednesday’s Patriots-Eagles Practice

August 7, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Another exciting day of joint practices. I don’t know about you guys but I am fired up to watch some Patriots football in a couple days and finally see some of these new guys who have really been standing out.

Aaron Dobson play of the day. Readjusted, changing the shoulder he was looking over on deep ball… twice… Before making catch. Wow play.

— Jimmy Kempski (@JimmyKempski) August 7, 2013

In 2-minute, Boyce catches three straight passes from Brady on three different routes.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 7, 2013

Not comparing A. Dobson to R. Moss, but haven’t seen this size on outside 4 Pats, & ability to win competitive-catch situations, since Moss.

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 7, 2013

no one is having more fun than Aqib Talib today…he is talking so much noise w Brady & co picking Eagles apart w hurry up offense

— shalise manza young (@shalisemyoung) August 7, 2013

After error on long ball on Tuesday, second-year safety Tavon Wilson looks like he is losing reps to rookie Duron Harmon today.

Belichick attends Parcells’ Hall of Fame Induction

August 4, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Nice to see coach make it out for one of his mentors. And yes Parcells was talking to Belichick when he said he wanted a few more championship rings.

Just saw Bill Belichick, after he greeted Parcells during break. He coached #Patriots practice this morning. “Got here as soon as I could.”

Tweets of Note from Friday’s Patriots Practice

August 2, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Each day seems to get more interesting than the last…

Marcus Benard took some snaps at DT in four-man front, simila to the Cunningham role from last season.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 2, 2013

Random thought: When Tim Tebow takes reps at QB, it is like he is running a different offense than what we see from Brady/Mallett.

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 2, 2013

No Cannon, Dowling or Cunningham. They join the usual suspects.

— Nick Underhill (@Nick_Underhill) August 2, 2013

Devin McCourty working on position flexibility/versatility. Spends most of practice at CB, not safety. Worked a bit at CB yesterday too.

Quick hit thoughts on how things are shaping up for the Pats

August 2, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Thursday was one of the more interesting days of practice, and some early themes are starting to emerge for this edition of the Pats.

First, the good:

The young wide receivers, now reinforced by the return of Edelman, look strong. Amendola is the clear #1, but behind him are three rookies who have all consistently flashed in the first week of camp.

No major injuries yet, when ACLs have been popping off around the league. Fingers crossed it continues.

Looks like I need to get on the Chandler Jones bandwagon. I’ll admit I had concerns about a sophomore slump, but so far he’s proved me wrong.

Edge rushers. Marcus Benard seems to be emerging as the favorite for the DPR role. But will he be the third DE in to sub Ninkovich or Jones?

Now the bad. Unfortunately.:

Everyone was penciling in Jake Ballard but he’s still limping around out there. Unless he gets healthy quickly it looks like we’ll seeing plenty of Hoomanawanui and Fells. And maybe Jake Sudfeld.

Similarly, Armond Armstead seemed a lock as the third defensive tackle, but is now gone indefinitely as he recovers from surgery for an infection. Marcus Forston could be playing significant snaps this year.

Greg Bedard observed that there no clear cut favorite at starter next to McCourty at safety. Bedard said that Adrian Wilson has issues in coverage and could possibly be headed to the dime linebacker role. Duron Harmon got a chance with the starters on Thursday. This will be an interesting battle to monitor in the games. They could really use Tavon Wilson to step up.

The Patriots Cycle Was Completed in 2010

I was watching the America’s Game video for the 2003 Patriots and was reminded of something that I realized after the Pats crapped the bed against the Ravens in 2009. During the last decade of dominance for the New England Patriots they experienced every possible ending to a season: Super Bowl Champs: 2001, 2003, 2004 […]
