What we learned: With Tom Brady, Patriots ‘always have a chance’ – WEEI | Christopher Price

The Patriots were in no huddle for 44 of their 83 plays on the season (53 percent), far and away the highest percentage for a team that was running no-huddle on just five percent of their offensive snaps through the first five games of the year. Two things to keep in mind: One, New England wasn’t playing uptempo, but once the play was done, they’d get to the line of scrimmage fairly quickly. It wasn’t necessarily fast football, but would prevent substitutions on defense for New Orleans, and so quite frequently, the Saints weren’t able to make the necessary personnel changes. And two, this was a formula the Patriots used to beat the Cowboys in 2011 – that year, Rob Ryan and the Dallas defense were able to keep Brady off balance early, but New England went no huddle for much of the second, third and fourth quarter, eventually running it on 52 percent of their snaps, a season-high.

The Patriots are the example of a well-coached team with fringe talent in some areas. Right now, they can effectively coach their way to wins by being efficient and not beating themselves. They are vulnerable if teams have better people where they are weak, and those teams can use the scheme to exploit New England’s weaknesses.

I respect the way you handled the Hernandez situation, but now that things are more clearly defined, have you given any thought to how Hernandez’s roster spot and projected snaps will be filled? Will the pats seek to sign a tight end or receiver such as David Thomas to replace the lost production, or will they look to fill the void from within? Is there a chance the Pats will trade for a receiver during the course of the season, similar to last year’s Talib trade?

Touched on some of the points earlier, but I think essentially the Patriots offense will be a bit more traditional, in that you have Gronk or Ballard as the Y tight end and then you mix and match around them, whether it’s 11 or 21 personnel. Maybe down the line you use some 12 with […]
