Defensive Backs Snap Graph 11/17

What can we determine from what we see here?  Sergio Brown and Patrick Chung ate into James Sanders’ play time a bit this past weekend. Chung played a lot of nickel corner at the expense of Jonathan Wilhite. Brown came on the field before Wilhite did as well. Not sure what this is a reflection of, especially since Wilhite looked okay against the Browns.

McCourty/Meriweather/Arrington don’t leave the field and I suspect Chung might be the same way if he wasn’t cramping/coming back from an injury.

Excel made a good choice in assigning Darius Butler’s line the color brown, we have no reason to suspect that he’ll get back into a heavy playtime rotation any time soon. That of course is unless the Pat decide to put 8 defensive backs on the field against Peyton Manning.

A Closer Look at the 2010 Patriots Defense (Halfway Edition)

November 12, 2010 by Mike Dussault

This season I’ve dedicated myself to focusing on the defensive personnel and strategy that the Patriots are using. I’ve kept track of formations. I’ve charted snap percentages. And I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

It has been an education and I’m happy to share some attempted insight at just what the Patriots have tried to do on defense that has left them with a 6-2 record, yet a poorly ranked defense.

I bust out the defensive snap percentage charts and provide a break down of the three levels of the Belichick 2.0 Pats Defense after the jump…

Looks like all signs are pointing toward Patchung! coming back this week. Yes, he’s my favorite player on the defense but this is just the boost they need. Let’s not forget he was second on the team in tackles before taking a helmet to the knee against the Chargers. Hopefully he provides a spark!

Oh happy day, Patrick Chung highlights! Can’t tell you how happy I am that Chung was not seriously hurt against the Chargers. All signs are pointing to him being out there versus the Vikes.

Notes on a Great Day: Patriots Hold On Vs. Chargers

October 25, 2010 by Mike Dussault

After a crappy three hour drive I’ve finally returned home from what was just about a perfect day. It could still end up being perfect but that depends on how hurt PatChung! is. Some general thoughts from the game which is even more general considering I haven’t even seen the highlights on TV yet.

– Robert and Jonathan Kraft made a pass by the Pats fans in the seats in back of the bench, shaking hands and signing autographs. I didn’t get a pic or video. Fail.

– We were surrounded by a great group of hard core Pats fans. Even got a spirited “de-fense” chant at the end of the game.

– Deaderick > Brace

– Cunningham and Ninkovich are the 3-4 OLBs. TBC and Crable are the third down pass rushers, with Pryor in the middle. Seems like it really breaks down that simply after today.

– Fletcher’s 3-3-5 nickel package was used for the second week in a row. Coaches must like what they’re seeing.

– I wonder how much the loss of Chung hurt this defense in the second half. Can’t stress enough how important he is to the defense. Initial indications from the Boston Herald is that Chung seemed like it wasn’t major. So that’s positive.

– Did Guyton get burned a lot in coverage today? Methinks he did.

– Yes we’re 5-1 but I think the addition of Logan Mankins back into the mix can only help this running game.

– Brady wasn’t his best, but having an INT-free day probably saved the game.

– McCourty. Wow.

– Butler was back out there, need to take a closer look at how much/how he did.

– Mayo is back to being a beast.

After seeing the steady progress and development of the rookie WR’s during the first few games, it was both shocking and depressing to see how flat the offense was against Cinci. How much of that can you blame on a good defense (this was the same team that beat Green Bay) vs. the players not making plays (when they were coming along better)? How much fault, if any, should we put in Brady’s hands? And will the Pats actually try to RUN the ball against the Saints, like they NEED to do to win?

You touch on solid points and I think all are partially true. Look, anyone who has ever played sports can probably tell you there are certain games where you just don’t have it. You’ll lose to a crappy team, much less a good team on the road. Here are three simple explanations: The Bengals have […]
