Notes on the Patriots defense (post Chiefs edition)

November 23, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Couple things to share as I re-watched the Pats’ defensive series against the Chiefs.

– I need to click a picture of it but the Pats went into the exotic 6-1-4 defensive formation we saw in 2009 for one snap. It featured the standard four man line with Ninkovich and Cunningham standing up at the ends. Mayo was the sole linebacker. It looks to me like this is a pure run stopping formation. Strange that Cunningham would come in on just a couple plays, one of which being this formation.

– Cunningham did see some snaps at OLB, but it was more in the 3-4 front that they went into quite a few times against the Chiefs. Sometimes they’d just have Andre Carter stand up, while having Wilfork at 5-technique, Brace at nose and Deaderick at the other 5-technique.

– Using Julian Edelman as a spy on the waterbug Dexter McCluster was a deft stroke by BB. Edelman drew a crucial holding penalty as well. I wonder if he’ll continue in this role if/when Dane Fletcher comes back.

– Gary Guyton actually took on a couple blocks in this one. Still just isn’t physical enough for my liking. It says a lot that they’re using Tracy White as the nickel pass coverage LB over Guyton now. When Spikes comes back it will be interesting to see what becomes of Guyton. If Fletcher comes back to it could bump Guyton from the game day roster.

– Of the three scrub d-backs (Molden, Adams, Moore) I think Molden has the most long term potential. Adams had a really solid game though and Moore showed up with that big hit that helped Arrington make an interception. All three will add quality depth when Chung/McCourty get back.

– Some people can write about what an expensive disappointment Shaun Ellis has been, but I prefer to look at what the low round/undrafted Deaderick and Love have done. Doesn’t matter how you get to New England, only matters what you do once you’re there.

– Still not sure what to make of Ron Brace. Saw a couple good things, and a few bad things out of him in limited action, though seeing him at nose tackle was a bit interesting after he worked at mostly LDE in the 3-4 last year.

– Will Jerod Mayo ever make a big play? Can’t recall the last time he had a sack/interception. He looked unstoppable in preseason and I really thought this was his year. But it seems like all he does is make tackles 3-5 yards down the line of scrimmage. And he continues to struggle in pass coverage.

– If you put Myron Pryor and Mike Wright back in the mix with their interior pass rush skills it’d make Andre Carter and Mark Anderson even more deadly. Another year without an interior rush, at least we’re getting by this time around.

– Ninkovich was horrible against the Steelers but he’s been on a tear ever since. He has to be one of the most under-appreciated Patriots defenders and he’s been doing it all, playing a majority of the snaps every week. You never know where you’re going to find building blocks and Ninkopoop is a great example of that.

– Let’s close this out with Kyle Arrington, your NFL interceptions leader. I’ve always liked his tenacity and his physical play, but he’s really taking it to the next level this year with his ball skills. Who’d have thunk it? Such an impressive progression, from special team stand out to all around stand out.

The Myth of Dominating After Thanksgiving

November 18, 2011 by Mike Dussault

It seems to be generally accepted that NFL teams should start playing their best football after Thanksgiving, leading to peak performance in the playoffs in January and ultimately a Super Bowl title in February. As if there is a clear progression to be made, that slowly builds to a climax in the big game.

However after looking back at the last 10 Super Bowl champions I found that this line of thinking is somewhat of a myth, especially since the 2006 Colts won the Lombardi Trophy.

Look at these post-Thanksgiving records of the eventual Super Bowl champs:

  • ‘10 Packers: 3-3
  • ’09 Saints: 3-3
  • ’08 Steelers: 5-1
  • ’07 Giants: 3-3
  • 06 Colts: 3-3
  • ’05 Steelers: 4-2
  • ’04 Patriots: 5-1
  • ’03 Patriots: 6-0
  • ’02 Buccaneers: 4-2
  • ’01 Patriots: 6-0

While no Super Bowl winner has had a losing record after Turkey Day, in 4 of the last 5 years the Super Bowl champs had just a .500 record in the supposedly all-important final six games of the regular season. And no team other than the ’01 and ’03 Patriots went undefeated from Thanksgiving to the Super Bowl (ahhhh, thank you very much)…

This just goes to show it’s not about peaking right after Thanksgiving or even in late December. It’s about peaking in the playoffs, and putting together 3-4 games of your best football when it’s all on the line. Clearly there’s not as much correlation to which teams are playing well at the end of the regular season to who takes home the grand prize as we might think.

Top 5/Bottom 5 Patriots Defenders

November 18, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Here’s who Pro Football Focus has ranked as the best and worst Patriots of defense.

Top 5

  1. Andre Carter – MVP
  2. Mark Anderson – really coming on lately
  3. Kyle Arrington – only star of the secondary
  4. Brandon Spikes – need him back asap
  5. Jerod Mayo – where are the big plays?

Bottom 5 (first is the worst)

  1. Gary Guyton – not surprising to me
  2. Shaun Ellis – most disappointing free agent left
  3. Philip Adams – big improvement vs. Jets
  4. Antoine Molden – okay vs. Jets in first start
  5. Sergio Brown – no longer in the safety mix?

Patriots firmly in the drivers seat for AFC East

November 18, 2011 by Mike Dussault

What a difference a week makes huh? Last Friday a lot of fans and pundits thought the Jets were primed to take the AFC East from the steely grasp the Pats have had on it for the better part of a decade. Now the Patriots have what amounts to a three game lead over the Jets and a cream puff schedule before them. Seems like the only thing that will prevent the Patriots from another division title and possibly a bye are the Patriots themselves.

But if the Pats are to make a serious playoff run they still have a ways to go and a lot of that has to do with getting healthy. On Thursday there were a total of 17 Pats on the injury report, and that probably had a lot to do with Belichick deciding not to have a full pads Friday as was expected. But overcoming injuries is something all teams that win a Super Bowl must do.

The two other buzz words that I’ll be focusing on for the final seven weeks of the season are consistency and communication. Consistency for the offense who finally started to show signs of life in the second half against the Jets, and communication for the defensive secondary.

We’ve long preached that young defenses take time to grow together, until they have enough experienced pieces in place to keep the inexperienced pieces in check. Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo are two of those cogs, but Patrick Chung is desperately needed back to help settle the secondary. What they did without him against the Jets was nothing short of incredible.

We’ve seen a lot of positives out of the defense the last couple games, now it’s just a matter of keeping that up and building on it. We’ve said it over and over again but the Patriots (for better or worse) run a complicated defense where communication is arguably the biggest key, even bigger than talent.

If you’re running a straight forward system it’s much more about talent, but for the Pats it’s about having everyone on the same page, moving in sync as one. If one guy is out of sync the defense can be exploited. So expect the improvement to continue as the collective experience of the defenders does.

I’m not worried about complacency with the Pats facing an assortment of unproven quarterbacks over the last two months of the season. They need the experience and Belichick will not let them overlook anyone.

What I am concerned about is not having another hyped game before the playoffs start. But who knows, maybe that final Bills game will actually mean something.

Inside the Patriots locker room after beating the Jets

Last night was the fist time I caught NFL Turning Point on Versus and I was blown away by it. It was as if someone took the epic nature of the NFL Films game highlights off of Inside the NFL and married them to X-and-O goodness of NFL Playbook to make a segment that lasted nearly fifteen minutes. It looks like I’ve just found my new favorite show!

Football Outsiders: Patriots DVOA Rankings

November 16, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Here’s where Football Outsiders DVOA rankings have the Pats this week. DVOA is one of the only stats I really put much weight into because it measures efficiency while taking the situation into account.

So every time you hear some pundit say the Pats have the worst defense in the NFL they’re referring to yards allowed, which doesn’t really mean much.

Most impressive of the stats below is how the Pats best point on defense has been their coverage on running backs, a major weakness in 2010. Of course they’re ranked dead last in the NFL against the number one wide receivers. Devin McCourty’s absence certainly won’t help that.

They also have the Pats with a 91.7% chance of making the playoffs.

Overall: 4th

Offense: 2nd

  • Passing: 2nd
  • Rushing: 5th

Defense: 23rd

  • vs. Pass: 21st
  • vs. Run: 24th
  • vs. #1 WR: 32nd
  • vs. #2 WR: 15th
  • vs. other WR: 18th
  • vs. TE: 22nd
  • vs. RB: 5th

Special Teams: 12th
