Rex Ryan on the three games of 2010 vs. the Patriots

It was a little hard to watch this at first, but I bit the bullet and I’m glad I did. As a Patriots fan you might not like Rex Ryan but you certainly have to respect the coaching performance he had in getting his team to rebound from the 45-3 blowout to beat the Pats in the playoffs. I know BB does.

There’s no question that they were absolutely the better team on that day in January. Of course if Crumpler doesn’t drop that TD it could’ve been a very different game. But them’s the bounces, and I know the Patriots will bounce back, especially with such a young defense that will still have a lot to prove in 2011.

Love him or hate him, Rexy makes the Pats-Jets rivalry a million times more fun, and at the end of the day that’s what football is all about.

Guess who’s announcing a Jets draft pick!?

April 27, 2011 by Mike Dussault

This just in from the Jets official twitter feed:

Congrats to Sergio from Harrington Park, NJ! He will be announcing the Jets 4th RD draft pick @ Radio City Music Hall on 4/30.

I can neither confirm nor deny that the Sergio in the video below is who they’re talking about…

After the game, Belichick was great. He came up to me and said, ‘That was an unbelievable coaching job; you deserve it and I hope you win the whole thing.’ He really said that, and I could tell he was sincere.

Rex Ryan – Play Like You Mean In

Positive, good sportsmanship postgame stuff like this with BB never makes headlines does it? No, only when he doesn’t hug someone long enough, or pushes a camerman who’s in his face, do we get all the outrage.

The Jets might be in the most trouble if the draft happens before free agency, because their list of free agents includes wide receivers Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes and Brad Smith, defensive end Shaun Ellis, inside linebacker David Harris (franchised), cornerbacks Antonio Cromartie and Drew Coleman and safeties Brodney Pool, Eric Smith and James Ihedigbo. The Jets have also released nose tackle Kris Jenkins, edge rushers Jason Taylor and Vernon Gholston and right tackle Damien Woody. That’s a list of 14 players who made some level of contribution in 2010.

Keep in mind, the Jets only made seven total draft picks in the last two years, so they don’t have a lot of young depth. If they don’t re-sign a good chunk of their own free agents, they’ll be scrambling to fill out their roster, and their depth could definitely become an issue.

Patriots’ Patrick Chung still explaining botched punt fake

February 11, 2011 by Mike Dussault

You know, I haven’t seen a single second of the Jets playoff loss since the game ended, it slowly awaits a viewing sometime in March if it’s lucky. However it seems like the failed fake punt is still very much on the minds of the media and fans alike.

On Thursday, Pat Chung showed up to read to some kids at an elementary school, and so did, in the words of Mike Reiss:

Reporters from Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Comcast SportsNet, WBZ-TV, Kraft Sports Productions, Fall River & ESPNBoston here at Chung event

Bruce Allen of Boston Sports Media Watch pointed out via twitter it was curious that the entire army showed up to an offseason charity appearance. As Bruce said:

would the media crowd be as big if it were James Sanders out there today? I’m cynical.

Just last week even the Sports Guy was still bemoaning the play via his mailbag.

Q: I’ve been playing the Pats-Jets game over and over again in Madden for the past two weeks, and never once have I panicked and accidentally let a special teams player audible to a fake punt.– Brendan, Boston

SG: (Nodding grimly.)

Okay, so clearly every one is hung up on this particular play, which by the way wasn’t accidentally allowed or made by a just a “special teams player”. But I haven’t even seen it since it happened. So I was finally goaded into re-watching it so I could form my own opinion about the call.

The first question: Could he have made the first down if he handled it cleanly?

Even Trent Dilfer, master of all things football knowledge, and Mr. Factorback Merrill Hoge couldn’t even agree on that, Dilfer told Bill Simmons on a recent podcast. They even called in all their interns and even they were divided. How controversial!

Well let’s have a look:

Pause it at :23 and tell me he isn’t walking to a first down. It’s Chung’s delay on mishandling the snap that allows Eric Smith to beat Sammy Morris’ block. If Chung catches it cleanly, Morris kicks Smith inside and Chung cuts around them with at least ten yards before the double team on the gunner can stop, cut back and tackle him.

So it really should’ve worked. The Patriots had four blockers for three Jets. The call is aggressive, there’s no doubt. Especially in a playoff game. But if successful it would’ve left the Pats just outside field goal range and they had the numbers. You can understand why they called it and why it should’ve worked.

So I guess the question is do you want an aggressive team, or do you want a team that plays it safe?

If Brady had been picked six on his halftime lob to Branch vs the Bears would you have been bullshit at him for throwing it?

Frankly I’m often surprised when teams aren’t more aggressive like the Patriots. The Ravens in particular played conservatively versus the Pats and it ended up costing them.

So while the call was an aggressive one, it’s what we’ve come to expect of Bill Belichick. Especially in a situation like that where the Jets might’ve been sleeping. Tactically I can understand why the call was made. However it went completely wrong, and the mistake was compounded when the Jets scored a touchdown (I think, right? Again, still haven’t re-watched this travesty yet).

As for Chung it was a confident call, and one that I hope he continues to be willing to make. He boofed it. He admitted he boofed it. So let’s move on.

Patriots and Jets in each other’s cross hairs this off-season

February 9, 2011 by Mike Dussault

If you’re wondering what will be motivating the off-season moves of the Patriots and Jets it’s pretty clear that it will be beating each other.

The last two seasons have been fairly identical in the rivalry with the Patriots taking the AFC East title, but the Jets having the more impressive playoff run. While the Jets got in the most recent blow by ending the Patriots season, both teams with continue to stand in the other’s way of a Super Bowl run.

The Patriots lost only three games in 2010, but two of them were to the Jets. The Jets meanwhile just can’t seem to sweep the Patriots, something they’ll need to do if they want to take the AFC East crown and the potential for home field advantage that comes with it.

Already this offseason we’ve heard Rex Ryan comment that while they’ve been able to beat the Patriots, no one else seems to be able to, and how it will be essential to play some home playoff games for once.

There’s no arguing that the Jets last two playoff runs have been extremely impressive, no matter how much it pains me to write that. But the fact remains that they have nothing to show for either season. They cannot expect to win three playoff road games every year to get to the Super Bowl. That’s why not only beating New England once, but sweeping them, is essential.

As for the Patriots the last two seasons they’ve flip flopped between playing flat and lifeless against the Jets to dominating them. Some of that has to do with Mark Sanchez’s corresponding performances, especially in the regular season at New England. But it’s clear that Rex Ryan’s defensive schemes give the Pats fits when they’re not firing on all cylinders.

When the Patriots traded Randy Moss, one common observation was that it was a move made specifically with beating the Jets in mind. They were abandoning the slow-to-develop deep passing game and going to more of a horizontal passing attack. It appeared to be a genius move after their 45-3 late season blow out of New York.

But after the playoff game the old voices were heard again… that the Pats needed to stretch the field to help open up that horizontal passing game. Perhaps they do. Perhaps it was more just a flat game where they couldn’t execute.

Either way each and every personnel move that these two teams make this offseason must be viewed through a prism of how it will correspond to defeating their chief divisional rival.

While the Patriots hold a distinct advantage in number of draft picks and less big-name free agents who need to be re-signed, the Jets will certainly attract high profile free agents.

For the Jets they must continue to surround Mark Sanchez with weapons, especially if they lose Braylon Edwards and/or Brad Smith. It seems to be a consensus that they will make Santonio Holmes a priority, but they must add talent around him. The Jets did not draft well in 2010, and while they were able to overcome it with some solid performances from unheralded veterans like Matt Slauson and Drew Coleman, the biggest thing that was effected was their depth.

Even in Hard Knocks it was pretty clear that the Jets lack of depth was frightening even to the coaching staff. They’ll need a good draft to start developing more talented depth.

The Patriots meanwhile had a great draft in 2010, but most would agree they went 14-2 in spite of a defense that was anything but shutdown. With Leigh Bodden and Ty Warren back in the mix they should be immediately improved, and even more so once they add another haul of draft picks.

I expect both teams to attack their off-season’s entirely differently. One will be a team whose primary focus is on free agentcy… re-signing their own and bringing in a collection of new veterans who want to play for Rex Ryan. The other will continue to add more youth via the draft, and hope for progressive improvement out of the young players who got a lot of experience in 2010.

One thing is for sure, the Patriots-Jets rivalry should reach new levels in 2011… if there’s a season.
