ESPN: “Data” shows Sanchez no better than Henne

June 2, 2011 by Mike Dussault

ESPN: “Data” shows Sanchez no better than Henne

I’m not trying to win any love from Jets fans by saying I think this article is a bunch of BS but based on his playoff performance against the Patriots, when it was all on the line, I’m forced to refer to BB’s credo “stats (or "data” in this case) are for losers".

Digest this:

Sanchez now has two of the top four games, in terms of passer rating, for the Jets in postseason play. He finished with a 127.3 rating in a 28-21 win over the New England Patriots in the AFC Divisional Playoffs. That’s actually not the best of his five postseason games – he posted a 139.4 rating in his playoff debut, in a win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2009 AFC wild card round.

Sanchez is the third quarterback to throw at least three touchdown passes against Bill Belichick’s Patriots in the playoffs (since 2000). The others were Jake Delhomme and Donovan McNabb in losses in Super Bowl XXXVIII and XXXIX respectively.

Sanchez had three touchdown passes, tying the Jets single-game postseason record. He did so in Gillette Stadium, where he’d previously thrown one touchdown and seven interceptions.

The Jets won partly because Sanchez excelled when the Patriots blitzed. Based on our video review, New England blitzed 40 percent of the time when Sanchez dropped back to pass and he went 6-for-10 for 108 yards, two touchdowns and a 136.7 passer rating in those instances.

I have total respect for how Sanchismo played against the Pats. He needed to be perfect for the Jets to win the game and that’s exactly what he was. It just makes me want to smash him even more ‘11.

This picture gives me the willies, I don’t know how else to describe it. At this point BB coaching the Jets seems like a distant alternate universe that I want no part of.

NFLN: Who will win the AFCE?

May 24, 2011 by Mike Dussault

NFLN: Who will win the AFCE?

I know I’m as biased as they come but let’s make a quick bullet point argument of why I think the Patriots will win the AFCE.

  • Bodden/Ty Warren return from injury
  • If Matt Light re-signs there will be no major free agency departures
  • Entire defense returns with another year of experience
  • TFB
  • BB

The Jets are clearly the only other contender but most of their wide receivers and cornerbacks aren’t even on under contract right now. So yeah some of them will re-sign, and some of them probably won’t. And any new guys will have to get up to speed pretty quick, especially if the first 3 games are lost and the Jets end up opening their season in Foxboro.

The NFLN dudes also get into some discussion of Randy Moss potentially joining the Jets. I’m all for that if it’s at the expense of Santonio Holmes or Braylon Edwards.  There’s no question those two receivers are far more suited to the Jets offense.

And I mean come on, Mark Sanchez hitting Moss on a 60 yard bomb? Never. Gonna Happen.

Looking back at some 2010 New England Patriots tape

May 12, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Last night I was longing for some Patriots football so I took a look at the last two games of the 2010 season, the final win versus the Dolphins and yes, some of the playoff loss to the Jets (mostly second half).

I focused on a few different players to see what we might expect out of them in this coming season.

  • You’d think Darius Butler might’ve used the opportunity against Miami to show that he had improved since his brutal start to the season, but no such luck. He looked just as bad against a lifeless Dolphins squad as he did against the Jets in week 2 when Braylon Edwards “dougied” at him. Watching him struggle in the same ways he struggled earlier in the season gave me the feeling he better be spectacular in camp this summer if he wants to make the team.
  • Brian Hoyer’s laser touchdown to Brandon Tate against Miami was really an incredible play. Especially because Hoyer got absolutely blasted as he let go of the ball. That’s the kind of throw that will have other teams drooling. Tate laid out and managed to hang on with a great catch that should inspire some confidence he has some deep threat potential. Both players have bright careers ahead of them, and with Tate especially, I think we’ve only scratched the surface.
  • I really enjoy Dane Fletcher’s game, he’s steady and consistent. He can run, but he’s also a good tackler. Right now it would seem as though his base defense position would be at weak inside linebacker spot, however he was tried at OLB versus the Jets in December. Mostly he was used as a sub package spy/blitzer. Interestingly, I even noticed that he was used as an interior rusher in the A gap versus the Jets. The point is that BB used him all over the field, in just about every way you can use a linebacker, so I have to imagine this means bright things are ahead for Fletcher. He should really push Guyton hard this year for the top coverage linebacker role.
  • Jermaine Cunningham is a tough, physical player. Against the Colts especially he was a dominant force that gives tackles all they can handle. With a full year in the system I don’t think it’s too much to expect big things from Cunningham in year two. The biggest thing is just getting more and more experience, but he has the makings for a three down outside linebacker in my eyes.
  • Rob Ninkovich doesn’t garner a lot of excitement amongst Patriots fans, but I believe he’s one of the most unsung players on the roster. Ninkovich is one defender who showed up to play in the playoffs. He was consistently generating pressure, setting the edge, and dropping into coverage (2 passes defensed). He did lose contain/miss a tackle against Ladainian Tomlinson that resulted in a big gain, but otherwise he was out there making plays when it counted most. I think he’s a lot more of a building block that many of us give him credit for. Losing him to a knee injury in the third quarter of the Jets game definitely did not help.
  • The play that ultimately did the Patriots in against the Jets was the first one of the fourth quarter. The Pats had just closed the game to 14-11 with an entire quarter to play. They were a stop away from a field goal to tie. Coming out of the break the Jets caught the Patriots in their run stopping defense and Sanchez hit Cotchery on an underneath cross through the slot that went for 58 yards. Two plays later the Sanchez threw a perfect touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes and the game was effectively over.
  • I also watched a bit of the San Diego game, and it was crazy how the offense was so similarly ineffective as they were for most of the playoff game. Had it not been for the Chargers turnovers the Patriots would never have won that game. In hindsight that performance really set the stage for what would happen the following week in Cleveland.

Remember when the New York Jets beat the New England Patriots to advance to the AFC Championship Game? Remember LaDainian Tomlinson crying and the Jets celebrating like they’d just won the Lombardi Trophy?

That’s how the Heat looked after finishing Boston. They turned the Boston series into a personal NBA Finals. They spent too much emotional capital on getting past a broken team. You can go to that emotional well only so many times.

Patriots players work out quietly, carry big stick

May 11, 2011 by Mike Dussault

There’s been a lot of my fellow Patriots die hards out there who were concerned that it appeared that the Jets were the only team that was making an effort to organize workouts during the lockout.

Yes, Mark Sanchez has put together a highly-publicized Jets West camp in California, complete with full media attendance, water balloon toss contests, Ipad giveaways and even a snazzy logo…

Well news comes today from Mike Reiss, who apparently had to press Rob Gronkowski pretty hard, that the Patriots are doing some team activities of their own, they’re just not making a public spectacle out of it.

“We’ve been doing everything, but we’re on the down-low,” second-year tight end Rob Gronkowski said Tuesday night. “[Others teams] may go to the media, acting like they’re some of the only teams doing it, but we’re working hard out here too. We’re just keeping it low.”

“We are intense. The workouts are insane,” he relayed. “We’ve been getting after it hard. I feel great right now, ready to go.”

Now we hit on the differences between the standard operating procedures between the Patriots and Jets plenty of times, especially last year when we got a glimpse inside Rexy’s domain via Hard Knocks.

There’s no secret that the Jets like to keep things a little more loosey-goosey than the Pats do, and who knows maybe that played a part in why they were able to put 45-3 behind them and defeat the Pats in the playoffs.

But the fact is that the Patriots aren’t just sitting around eating bon bons,  watching the Jets all become BFFs with matching Ipads while waiting for the lockout to end. They’re getting after it and will be ready to go whenever the season starts.
