Brady, Belichick and Revis Built this City on Rock n’ Roll.

This video has left me speechless and I cannot stop watching it!! But yeah, it pretty much sums up how giddy I’m feeling about watching this trio together this year. Wow.

Sing It Kitty- Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Darrelle Revis (by Ken Dis-Chargeman)

Thanks to @614Patsfan for sending it to me… I think.

What the departure of Wilfork will mean for Patriots

March 13, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Vince Wilfork was an elite player for the Patriots, especially from 2010-2012 when he became the ultimate piece on Bill Belichick’s defensive chess board.

Belichick would move Wilfork around to take away a team’s strength and that covered up what were significant holes elsewhere in the defense. There was a time when Wilfork was viewed as nothing more than a 3-4 nose tackle, but Wilfork proved he was a three-down defensive linemen who could slide up and down the line and destroy multiple blockers.

But I also think that Wilfork became somewhat of a crutch for the Pats, and they essentially ran him into the ground. An injury like tearing his Achilles is really not all that surprising considering the wear and tear that added up on a man of Wilfork’s size.

Every year I felt the Pats needed to deepen their defensive tackle rotation and despite their best efforts (Albert Haynesworth, Tommy Kelly, Gerard Warren, Ron Brace) they could never find the consistency or ability next to Big Vince.

So what do the Pats do now?

Well, I don’t think they have to go out and replace his body type, i.e. draft Louis Nix III or sign BJ Raji. The fact is that Wilfork was special and he was a defensive lineman not a nose tackle. Most of all they need another defensive lineman and they need one who fits today’s game.

This is a passing league. The Pats are in their sub-package 60% of the time. For the 38% of the time they’re in their base and really need to stop the run, they can plug Sealver Siliga in at nose tackle and he’ll be fine.

But replacing Wilfork is about finding a defensive tackle who fits their sub-package. They don’t need one who can two-gap in their nickel defense for run protection, and really, that might be for the best. If that’s really a concern, Siliga can cover it if they’re getting run all over in sub.

As much as it hurts to say it, the pass defense with Wilfork at the forefront was the Pats Achilles (pardon the pun). Not to put it all on Wilfork, but firing up field and disrupting the interior of the offensive line was not his strength, especially after playing almost every down.

Wilfork’s departure is a chance to remake their nickel front and insert a player who isn’t just there for run protection, but can consistently bring pressure as part of a rotation. And it doesn’t just have to be one guy.

The Pats already have some good candidates on their roster in Chris Jones, Armond Armstead and Tommy Kelly, if he can return from his knee injury of last season.

Add another couple defensive tackles with varying specialties and the Pats should be well-set. They might not have a player of Wilfork’s caliber, but they’ll be better prepared to attack in the passing game, even if it’s at the expense of exposing themselves to the run a bit more.

Wilfork was a special player who allowed the Pats to do special things, there’s no question, but the Pats overused him and arguably mis-used him in their sub-package.

His release now presents an opportunity to redefine the Pats sub-package and the Pats defense could actually be better off for it.

Report: Vince Wilfork asks Patriots for release

March 13, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Had a feeling the Wilfork situation could turn ugly and it looks like it this might be the end for him in New England. Wilfork’s Achilles injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for him or the team – he was due a major salary and the recovery from that kind of injury is no sure thing.

It was expected the Pats would ask him to restructure, likely in the form of an extension that could minimize his cap hit and give him a fair chance to prove he could return to an elite level of play, but it doesn’t look like Vince is interested in that.

He fought long and hard for his new deal in 2010 and things got close to turning ugly a couple of times, but cooler heads prevailed and the Pats locked him up to a five-year, $40 million deal with $25 million guaranteed and an $18 million signing bonus.

If this is the end of Wilfork in the New England it’s a sad day. He carried the defense through their defensive turnover from the dynasty days to what the Pats have now and it’s unclear how the Pats will move forward without their key piece in the middle.

They have some young depth in Sealver Siliga who really came on at the end of 2013 but you can’t just replace Vince Wilfork.

He’ll always be a Patriot legend in my book. Sad that it had to end this way.

#Patriots Pro Bowl DT Vince Wilfork has asked that the team release him after 10 seasons in New England, according to sources.

Report: Patriots sign Darrelle Revis to 1-year, $12 million deal

March 13, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Adam Schefter reports the New England Patriots pulled off a deal that has turned around their offseason after a slow start that saw them lose Aqib Talib to the Denver Broncos.

It’s a good deal for the Pats, albeit a short one that could see Revis depart next offseason. It will be interesting to see if there are any kind of clauses in regards to the Franchise Tag.

But otherwise, WOW! The team building phase of the 2014 offseason is officially underway and it exciting to see a player of Revis’ caliber paired with Bill Belichick.

The Pats now have that cover corner who can take away an opponent’s top option and it should make their entire defense better.

Listen in to the podcast at 11am tomorrow morning with special guest Paul “Fitzy” Fitzgerald as we fawn all over Revis and the implications of putting him into the defense.

CB Darrelle Revis and the New England Patriots have reached agreement on a one-year, $12 million deal, league sources told ESPN.

Also sounds like the Patriots are open to eventually making the marriage with Revis a longer-term one. Power move by New England, no doubt.

Patriots Wednesday Afternoon Update

March 12, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Couple things to pass along with thoughts as we round the first full 24 hours of free agency.

First, Darrelle Revis has been released and there’s been plenty of speculation that he’s going to land with the Pats. As much as I’d love that to happen, I’m going to wait on any kind of analysis or conjecture until he actually does land somewhere. But there’s no question Revis > Talib. I’ll leave it at that for now.

Albert Breer reports the Pats are working on an extension for Vince Wilfork which should bring them some immediate cap relief. Couple that with the release of Isaac Sopoaga, a move everyone expected, and the Pats suddenly could have plenty of cap space to work with.

Doug Kyed of NESN.com also reports the Pats have shown some interest in receiver Jason Avant. Another veteran depth/competition move. You never know who might just “get it” with Brady like Jabar Gaffney did in 2006 so they keep throwing guys like that at the wall, especially to push the rookies.

I’ve received a ton of questions in the inbox, sorry I haven’t gotten to any of them yet. I’m just waiting for the Pats to start making some moves before I start analyzing what has or hasn’t happened.

I have a feeling the next 48 hours are going to be crazy so stick around…

Tedy Bruschi fired up on NFL Live. Talking about Darrelle Revis possibility to the Patriots, Bruschi says, “This deal has to be done!”

The Pays are bringing in Tebow as a QB. Any thoughts?

Not to be overly Belichickian, but I think he’ll just be given the chance to compete. They’ll limit the circus around him, and ask him to do a number of different things. Tebow scared me when I heard he was going to the Jets, but they never played to his strengths and just made him […]
