Updated snap charts for each of the three levels of defense. 

Some big picture thoughts…

DL: I think Brandon Deaderick got the game against the Lions off so he’d be ready to rumble against the Jets. Kyle Love got his most extensive snaps against the Lions and has been active the past three weeks. Will that continue versus Jets?

LBs: Jermaine Cunningham is a hard man to pin down, part of me wonders if at this point he’s considered slightly better at run stopping than pass rushing by the coaches. Or if the Lions game was just a chance to give Dane Fletcher some more chances pass rushing.

DBs: The Patriots really have had every DB healthy and playing well at once this season. The Jets game could very well be the first time. Early on Meriweather was still freelancing, but when he came around Patrick Chung got hurt, and when Chung came back Wilhtie went out. So we really have yet to see what this secondary will look like when firing on all cylinders. Which might give some people a little hope.

Before things get too crazy with Jets – Pats…

I know I’ll be caught up in the hype this week along with everyone else. In fact, I’ll probably be leading a lot of it. But first, let’s  just remember that while this game will be hyped like the Super Bowl, especially if you’re still watching Sportscenter, it’s not the Super Bowl. 

If the Jets win, the Patriots will be almost assured a wild card spot and probably end up back in San Diego, Kansas City, Jacksonville or maybe even Indianapolis (I don’t write off Peyton Manning, at least in the regular season). 

So it’s pretty clear the Patriots need this game more than the Jets do. It wouldn’t be an impossible road to a division title and bye if they lost, but it would be pretty close to impossible, requiring almost certainly a 4-0 final quarter of the season. 

Either way the road doesn’t get any easier for the Jets or the Pats, and for either team to win all four of their remaining games would be impressive.

Both teams must go to Chicago. The Pats head there on a short week right after MNF. The Jets see Miami then head to Pittsburgh before making a trip of their own to see the NFC North-leading Bears. They close out the season hosting the Bills.

The Pats play their final game against the NFC North by welcoming a Green Bay Packers team that will be in the thick of the playoff hunt and badly need a win. 

The Jets do have one advantage, both their final two AFC East games are at home. The Pats must travel to Buffalo, where I hear the weather at the end of December is beautiful and ideal for football, before welcoming Miami for the finale.

If the Jets win they will have a virtual lock on the AFC East crown with essentially a three game lead on New England with four to play, since they would also own all tie breakers. That doesn’t really make it fun for anybody, does it?

Pats need this one more, and especially being at home, that usually is a pretty good recipe for success. And of course a little Spygate bullshit never hurts either.

Here’s what PFF had to say about how some Pats did versus the Lions…

Patriots: Three performances of note

We’ll start with Brady (+8.1), who had the perfect game (statistically, at least). The Lions got pressure on Brady on 12 of his 28 dropbacks but he responded by completing 63.6 percent of his passes, and it was much worse for Detroit when Brady was given time. He completed 87.5 percent of his passes in this instance at an incredible 17.1 yards per attempt. It was still mainly short stuff (only 8 of 27 passes were longer than 10 yards) but a great effort nonetheless by Brady.

Rookie cornerback Devin McCourty (+2.3) had a big day with two interceptions. Perhaps more impressively, McCourty only allowed two completions the entire game for a combined 13 yards despite being thrown at seven times. Three of those attempts came againstCalvin Johnson, and only one of those were complete as McCourty enhanced his reputation.

Not for the first time this season, we’re a little disappointed with the play of Sebastian Vollmer (-3.4). He had his struggles with Cliff Avril and Ndamukong Suh in giving up four quarterback pressures but was also comfortably the worst Patriots lineman when it came to run blocking. Last year we couldn’t help but heap praise on Vollmer, but he’s played like a different guy in 2010.

Rookie report

Brandon Spikes (+1.7) saw limited action but did break up a pass. … We got to see more of Dane Fletcher (+1.1), who had two QB pressures and one batted pass. … Kyle Love (+3.3) turned 23 defensive snaps into two quarterback pressures and two stops whileJermaine Cunningham (+0.7) also had two pressures. … Rob Gronkowski (+1.2) made some nice plays as a receiver, catching all five balls thrown his way, while fellow tight end Aaron Hernandez (+0.7) didn’t do much outside of his touchdown. … Punter Zoltan Mesko (+0.0) had an average day and will be glad Stefan Logan didn’t break any big returns on his kicks.

For Detroit, Amari Spievey (-1.5) had a tough day despite making nine tackles. Shouldn’t the 2-9 team have a bunch of rookies playing big snaps, not the 9-2 team?
