Bruschi Thinks Bills Pose Last Big Threat to Pats

December 17, 2010 by Mike Dussault

In this video Tedy lays out that he thinks the Bills are the team with the best shot to beat the Pats in their remaining three games, though it’s somewhat by default since Green Bay will have Matt Flynn at quarterback and Miami will be coming to Foxboro in the cold of January.

Bru’s confidence that a Flynn start equals a Patriots win scares me a little bit. I’ve seen Flynn play a little bit and he’s not horrible. No one thought Colt McCoy could take it to the Pats (and of course he did have Peyton Hillis to lean on), but I never get overconfident about backups these days. Guys always seem to raise their level against the mighty Patriots.

You can’t watch the Patriots and not be impressed. They’ve scored in their last five games 196 points, which is 32 more than the Panthers have scored in 13 games this season. The team looks incredible, but the one thing that I would say is that these things go in cycles. And just because in Weeks 12 and 13 you look dominant does not ensure postseason success. I was talking to a head coach yesterday and we were talking about the Patriots and their dominance. And he goes, “They’re not as good as people are making them out to be.” I go, “No?” And he goes, “Every team has flaws, and they show up at different times.” The Patriots’ flaws have not shown up the last few weeks. They have not turned over the football in five weeks, which is an NFL record. At some point, the secondary is going to get beat, Brady’s going to get intercepted, there’s going to be a fumble from a running back. These things have not happened to them lately, and they will happen. All I’m saying is, because they’ve been so dominant the last two weeks, they’re not that good. Not that good. Not dominant. I may not pick against the Patriots from here through the Super Bowl. So, there’s going to be one week – maybe, maybe – when I’m wrong. Otherwise, I’ll be right every single week with this team.

Adam Schefter (and I can’t say I disagree with him)…

Patriots’ McCourty & Warren Practice Friday

December 17, 2010 by Mike Dussault

File this in the good news category. Devin McCourty practiced again on Friday and it looks like the reports that his rib was indeed not serious. McCourty talked with reporters today which is a very good sign. McCourty also laughed at how many people were concerned and asking about his rib via twitter. You’ll never find me trying to get injury info out of a Patriot via twitter. You’re more likely to get a donut out of Rex Ryan’s paws.

Gerard Warren coming back is good news as well. I had kind of assumed he might just be getting a little extra time off since he was banged up a bit last weekend. Having Warren back in the mix at least makes things along the defensive line manageable. Without him we would’ve been looking at Wilfork, rookies and new guy.

With the way the Packers have struggled to run the ball it might be a good bet that we’ll see a lot of nickel packages with a Cunningham – Wilfork – Warren – TBC front. Having just watched the Packers game against the Lions last weekend it was apparent that Flynn will make some passes. He’ll also miss on some, but even with Aaron Rodgers in the game Green Bay had trouble moving the ball on Detroit.

PFW: Why BB is Coach of the Year

December 17, 2010 by Mike Dussault

PFW: Why BB is Coach of the Year

This year is neck and neck with 2001 and 2007 in terms of BB’s greatest coaching seasons, and we won’t know where it ranks until the end.

Let’s remember in 2001 he did it with a back up quarterback. Granted that quarterback ended up being Tom Brady, but at the time he wasn’t the legend he turned out to be yet. He also shut down one of the greatest offenses in history with a great game plan to win the Super Bowl.

2007 is close behind because it was an impossibly difficult schedule and they rewrote the record books. But by not winning the Super Bowl I can’t put that above the 2001 season.

I’m not sure if this season could top 2001 yet. What he’s done with such a young defense has been remarkable, but surely having Tom Brady has given them some leeway. Put a lesser quarterback on the Pats and they’d probably have lost at least three more games.

But the game plans and execution in 2010 have been nearly flawless as we’ve come down the stretch and this schedule has been just as difficult as 2007’s.

Will Malcolm Butler Break the Patriots’ Corner Philosophy?

Here in the dead of the offseason I’ve been pondering the upcoming contract situations for various Patriots players in the next couple of years. Jamie Collins and Dont’a Hightower are the first priorities, with Jabaal Sheard garnering plenty of consideration himself. And those three are just the top of the list, the Pats will be hitting […]
