Patriots Post-OTA Depth Chart Reset and 53-Man Projection

June 20, 2014 by Mike Dussault

There is an open roster spot as of this posting, with some likely cuts coming in the next couple weeks it’s good to have the ability to add someone. I’d still love another tight end or defensive end.

I’ve shifted the starting three linebackers with Mayo in the middle, keeping Hightower and Collins on the outside. The more I think about it, the more this makes sense. It’s a better use of the personnel especially against the pass. We’ll see how it holds up against runs up the gut.

Lot of tough decisions to make right now on the 53-man roster, especially on the offensive line where I kept nine. Also not sure how the linebackers will play out, they need some core special teamers there. Running backs are an interesting spot too, I expect we’ll start talking about Stephen Houston more once the pads come on and less Roy Finch. Of course injuries will make things a little easier to project unfortunately.

Tweets of note from Wednesday’s Patriots Minicamp Practice

June 18, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Headlines today are that Darrelle Revis didn’t finish the session and Josh Boyce pulled up with what’s probably a hamstring tweak and didn’t finish either. Otherwise, more of the same with the rookies showing some promise, especially Garoppolo, who is benefiting from Ryan Mallett’s absence. In the long term this Mallett injury could really be beneficial to the Pats as Garoppolo is immediately getting a ton of work.

Here are the tweets of note…

Josh Boyce has a left leg injury and didn’t practice. Got stretched out early but watched the rest of practice. Setback for huge offseason.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) June 18, 2014

Roughly midway thru practice, Gronk and Slater emerged from the practice field and ran sprints up far hill behind practice field.

— Christopher Price (@cpriceNFL) June 18, 2014

Rookie Jon Halapio continues to get a lot of reps at guard with a reasonable facsimile of the starting offensive line.

— Christopher Price (@cpriceNFL) June 18, 2014

I sound like a broken record, but Daxton Swanson was all over the field again today. Two INTs and a pass breakup.

— Doug Kyed (@DougKyedNESN) June 18, 2014

Darrelle Revis did not finish practice, though reporters didn’t see him exit field

— shalise manza young (@shalisemyoung) June 18, 2014

Brandon LaFell returned to practice, but it looked like Josh Boyce tweaked something in the warmup line and didn’t participate.

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) June 18, 2014

Without Mallett, Garoppolo got more reps. Like yesterday, a good day for the rookie–more good than bad throughout session.

Tweets of Note from Tuesday’s Patriots Minicamp Practice

June 17, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Many themes of the offseason are continuing but the headline has to be the progress of Wilfork and Kelly. Doesn’t mean they won’t still end up on PUP, but their presence in 11-on-11 work can’t be taken as anything but a positive.

Vince Wilfork, Tommy Kelly and Will Smith never left the team today to go into the bubble. That’s good news.

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) June 17, 2014

Mankins, Gronk, Ryan Mallett, LaFell, Slater, DJ Williams, T.Hawkins, Skinner, & Gallon were in the rehab group that was limited

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) June 17, 2014

With Mallett sidelined, Garoppolo again got lots of work & there was more good than bad. Definitely sharper than what we saw at last OTA.

— Christopher Price (@cpriceNFL) June 17, 2014

Danny Amendola has a really nice catch in the back of the end zone on a ball from Brady in 7 on 7s.

— Christopher Price (@cpriceNFL) June 17, 2014

CB Daxton Swanson continues to impress in a fairly crowded defensive back group.

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) June 17, 2014

Duron Harmon is going to be the starting safety next to McCourty, in my opinion. Competition is his to lose.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) June 17, 2014

No Dennard again. Not sure if his absence is injury related but we haven’t seen him this spring. #patriots #minicamp

— Paul Perillo (@pfwpaul) June 17, 2014

rookie RB James White got good run with top offense (ie Brady under center), as did rook Jon Halapio at RG

Setting stage for New England Patriots’ mandatory minicamp – ESPN Boston

Setting stage for New England Patriots’ mandatory minicamp – ESPN Boston

Getting a late start here at Pats blog central, but it’s a good week and the last one with a glimpse of the team until training camp opens next month. Prepare yourselves for The Void!!

Good primer from Reiss on storylines to watch. More than anything it’s just about who’s out there because we won’t get much schematic or depth chart insight. The injured guys are the ones to watch and it should gives us an idea of who are likely to land on PUP to start camp.

Are you noticing a full-scale sense of urgency, not just from the obvious viewpoint of Patriots fans, but also from past players seemingly calling out this specific team to get another SB now? (Notable quotes from Ty Law, Tedy Bruschi, etc. this week.) It’s like they know the window is closing and this is the best chance in a while for their boy Brady to get no. 4. That’s how much these guys still love the Pats and Brady. It’s kickass to see!

To be honest, it hasn’t really stood out to me. I think I felt it moreso in 2011 when they hadn’t gotten close since 2007, plus there was the Myra Kraft memory that amplified it a bit. I know Brady is close to the end, but I’d actually expect them to be even better on […]
