Nice little BB video find this morning. While attending a Belichick press conference is on my bucket list, I think I would get more enjoyment out of watching the press try to crack him than any information BB might actually divulge. Personally I wish they’d just ask him more X and O questions and watch him go to town. Always love it when someone asks some random football history question and BB starts spouting off, showing how affable he really is.

They touch on it briefly in this video, but BB and Patriots are ALWAYS competing. Whether it’s not divulging any information at the press conference, or demanding the prospects they talk to at the scouting combine keep quiet about it, they will always be looking to gain an edge.

One thing that wasn’t mentioned in this piece was how BB also is careful of how his words will effect his own team. Overt praise for one player might come at another’s expense. By showing a complete focus on the upcoming opponent even in his press conference Belichick is always sending that message to his team. Don’t worry about anything other than preparing yourself to play your best this Sunday. No matter how much you did or didn’t play last weekend. No matter what off the field distractions are going on. Focus on the here and now, and get yourself ready to go.

Under the radar alert! Cliff Matthews – South Carolina OLB (6-04, 257)

I know this video is just a lil’ bit over the top but if it’s to be believed Matthews has the intangibles the Pats look for. He’s probably more of a mid-round guy but it looks like he has the size the Pats like for their OLBs and to my untrained eyes he looked more athletic at the combine than a lot of people gave him credit for. Here are some scouting reports…

Matthews is an experienced, productive defensive end. Good height and length . Try-hard pass rusher who uses his hands to stay of blockers. Shows the ability to push the pocket. Active hands against the run too, disengages quickly and can find the football. Has a motor that doesn’t stop.

Doesn’t possess the natural athleticism, fluidity and closing burst to consistently pressure the passer. Hips and flexibility are below average. Lacks the lower body power to effectively anchor against the run. Can’t hold up against the double-team. Doesn’t appear capable playing much in coverage.

A tall, long-armed defensive end who does a nice job using his length to keep his legs clean on runs off his frame and quickly closing on the football. Exhibits good range in pursuit and works hard closing the door from the backside. Lacks ideal instincts and will take himself out of some plays trying to get up the field. Exhibits a decent pad level off the snap initially, but too quickly allows himself to get upright into contact vs. the run game. Can easily be pushed past the play and struggles to consistently use his length to stack and shed. Does a nice job shooting through gaps inside and crashing down the line initially off the football, but isn’t a real effective stack and shed guy at this stage. 

Exhibits a good, not great, first step as a pass rusher, but really uncoils quickly out of his stance and paired with his length gets into opposing tackles quickly. Isn’t a guy who can consistently turn the corner, but does a nice job setting up his outside rush by changing gears, dropping his shoulder and accelerating around the edge. Works hard and has the type of body control to remain balanced when flattening out around the corner once he gains a step. However, it’s his suddenness and change of direction skills that really make him tough to block. Possesses a violent set of hands and works a clean arm over back inside, cleanly exploding off his outside foot and gaining a step inside toward the QB. Now, has a tendency to get upright off his counter inside and lacks the kind of strength to quickly fight his way off blocks and can be engulfed at times. Also, isn’t a real effective bull rusher at this stage, struggles to generate consistent leverage and drive his way into the backfield. 

Nevertheless, he sees a lot of double teams on the edge and, for the most part, has the type of motor to continue to work his way through contact and fight his way toward the QB.

Impression: Possesses a good-looking frame, but I would like to see him play with a little more leverage through contact. Possesses a good first step for his size, can cleanly change directions and but fails to routinely slip and disengage from blocks.

Here’s a video review of the Patriots 2010 draft class, which seems even more badass with the perspective of the last year. The crazy thing is that the Pats have better ammo this year than they had last year! If they make good choices and the board falls their way these could be two of the most epic back-to-back draft classes ever.

Again, no matter who is or isn’t drafted (yes even if they don’t take JJ Watt OR Cameron Jordan) the Patriots will improve their team as much, and probably more, than any one else in April. So yeah the first dynasty might be dead, but there very well could be another one brewing…

Going back to last year, the Patriots have consistently made offers to Bauer that would put Mankins second or third among guards.

Several agents who represent high-performing offensive linemen and are familiar with the offer have said they would have taken the Patriots’ offer without much thought.

If Bauer insists on making Mankins the highest-paid guard in the league, maybe he should look elsewhere. In case Bauer hasn’t noticed, the Patriots aren’t in the habit of handing out premier contracts at any position besides quarterback.

17. JJ Watt (DL, Wisconsin): yup, it’s officially a Patriots fan JJ Watt lovefest.

28. Justin Houston (OLB, Georgia): I like Houston, though some have said he doesn’t play with desired intensity. He had the fastest 10-yard split of any of the OLB conversion types **CORRECTION 2nd fastest to one of our favorites Brooks Reed (thx Greg Knopping of PatsPulpit!)**, played in the best college conference, and seems to be sturdy enough to take on the run. My opinion: solid pick, but could he be had at 33?

33. Aaron Williams (CB, Texas): Not a total head scratcher but I think one of these three picks has to be an interior OL. Williams would add another great young cover guy to secondary that must continue to improve.

There was lots of talk about Aldon Smith yesterday on the podcast, with Jay Shields feeling he was a perfect fit for the Patriots defense. He’s definitely raw, but if the Pats are building for long-term success wouldn’t a raw player who could possibly fit your defense really well make sense?
