NFLN Video: Are Patriots creating a QB smokescreen?

NFLN Video: Are Patriots creating a QB smokescreen?

Here’s Willie Mac breaking down all the QB visits the Pats have been taking. Of course it makes sense to at least try to create the impression that you could draft a quarterback despite Brady still being only 33.

But the thing that no one is talking about is how these soon-to-be-drafter QBs will all probably end up playing against the Patriots at some point down the line. So never underestimate the chance to get a closer look at these guys, not only to find out what their strengths are, but what their weaknesses are.

Hard to believe it’s been seven years since Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan. If you haven’t seen The Tillman Story documentary I highly recommend you check it out, or read Jon Krakauer’s definitive Where Men Win Glory. It’s a tragic story, but Tillman was an unbelievable individual who we could all learn something from.

One thing not often mentioned is Tillman’s connection to the Patriots and BB. From Peter King:

In the last conversation [Pat] Tillman had with Bauer, he told his agent, “You won’t believe the letter I got from Bill Belichick.” In the letter, Belichick praised him for his courage, his leadership, his willingness to set an example for people in this materialistic society, and he said it was an honor to be in the same league he’d been in. “In the letter,” Bauer told me, “Belichick said, ‘If you ever need a job when you get out of the Army, give me a call.’ ” So what would have happened if Tillman hadn’t been killed? He’d have been 28 at the time of his scheduled discharge… I don’t know what team would have signed him. But the Patriots, even with Rodney Harrison, then 32, ensconced at strong safety, were not deep on the back end, with only one other solid NFL player, Eugene Wilson (let go two years later). After the Belichick letter, I bet Tillman would have walked to Foxboro and taken any role Belichick would have offered.

It was a tragic end to a special life. We can only imagine what Tillman might’ve gone on to do in this world. He was an inquisitive and open-minded individual who didn’t fit the picture that the military painted of him after his death. I am glad that the truth is now out there.

Pat Tillman will never be forgotten.

With the amount of zone blitzes colleges do you’ll see enough examples of those defensive ends dropping into coverage and you try to ear mark those plays and pay particular attention to that because that’s something he’s going to be asked to do. Then when you ask the guy to rush the passer, well, rushing the passer is rushing the passer so if he can do it pretty good in college then you’d think it would translate to the NFL. Likewise, if he can hold up against tackles and not get knocked off the ball on the edge you would think that would be able to translate. Against good competition – not dominating against some lower level teams. Does he do it against the good teams on a consistent basis? That’s where you can kind of get a correlation.

“I think that’s really going to be a key part of this whole draft, I think, when we look back on it in a couple years and evaluate it.

It will probably come down to which teams are able to evaluate those front seven positions,” Belichick said. “I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of those players taken high, whether they be defensive linemen or defensive ends/outside linebackers or outside linebackers/defensive ends, however you want to look at it. The teams that are able to come out with the impact players in that group relative to the teams that take players and they aren’t able to contribute for them has a lot to do with who’s able to gain the most out of this draft so that will be an interesting part of it.

“I think that’s just kind of the trend in college football these days. You don’t see a lot of true linebackers at the end of the line on their feet. Most of them play with their hand down and you have to make that decision with the Robert Quinns and the Justin Houstons of the world and all those guys … how well you think they can play on their feet or how much you want to play them down? We dealt with that last year when we drafted Jermaine Cunningham but when you look through the league just about everybody’s got those players and last year it was like Koa Misi down in Miami … you just have to project how well those guys are going to be able to play on their feet or how much you want to just leave them down and treat them pretty much as defensive ends even though you have a 3-4 base defense. Those are tough evaluations but they’re there every year.”

Film Breakdown: Browns pull a fast one on the Patriots

OK, I know this isn’t exactly a positive piece of Patriots propaganda here, but I always find hard core film breakdown interesting, and despite the result of this play (i.e. my favorite team looking dumb) I still enjoy seeing wha’ happen.

Biggest culprit? Ninkopoop completely losing contain to the point where he’s running past Mayo in pursuit of the wrong guy. Cunningham, coming from the opposite side, is closer to make a play than Ninkovich was.
