new england patriots

July 27, 2011 by Mike Dussault

We’re up and running here at the Ministry of Pats Propaganda. With training camp opening tomorrow I’m officially excited. The Pats will be doing their conditioning test today and it should be interesting to see who doesn’t pass and who ends up on PUP.

The PUP list is always the ultimate buzz kill to the start of training camp. Suddenly you find out certain guys that you had no idea were even injured won’t be ready to go at the start of camp.

For a detailed first hand account of what the conditioning run is like check out Mike Reiss’ interview with Tedy Bruschi here.

The conditioning test is a series of sprints, and depending on what position you play, it could be 40, 50 or 60 yards. The quarterbacks had to do 50-yard sprints and he’d talk about how Bernie Kosar was one of the slowest quarterbacks in the history of the NFL, but every year he passed the test. He’d tell us if Bernie Kosar could pass that test, anyone in the room could pass it. You could train specifically to pass the conditioning test by running the test two to three times a week in the last few weeks before training camp.

My test was three sets of ten 50-yard sprints. You had to complete each sprint in seven seconds, and you had 30 seconds in between each sprint. In between the three sets of ten 50-yard sprints, you got a break of three minutes.

Thoughts on the Jets and Asomugha coming shortly…

Really hoping we can get a full season out of Branch. His injury risk factor scares me…

Mankins won’t hold out on Patriots

July 26, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Good news comes this afternoon that Logan Mankins will not hold out again, and will sign his Franchise Tender and play this season for $10million unless the sides can figure out a long term deal by September 20th.

This quote from Mankins’ agent Frank Bauer, was especially nice:

“Early this morning, Logan spoke with Bill Belichick and both are very happy, happy to get started. Logan is looking forward to being with his teammates and coaches, with a fresh start.

So one of the big questions we had going into camp has now been answered. Mankins is in. Now that leaves just Matt Light as the big question mark. I’m sure we’ll start hearing about him taking visits to teams like Kansas City and Seattle over the course of the next couple days.

The ultimate coup would be BB talking him into a 1-2 year deal with Pats, otherwise I think it’s a good bet someone offers him a 3-year deal that trumps anything New England would put together.

But I feel alot better about the Light situation knowing Mankins will be next to whoever our LT is, especially if it’s Solder. But I think it’s probably LeVoir early on.

Patriots UDFA Profile: Anthony Leonard, WVU LB

At 6-01, 254 it doesn’t immediately appear that Leonard is a physical fit outside of WILB, but would ideally be a candidate as a core special teams player.

NEPatriotsDraft.com: Full Patriots UDFA Signee List

Great job by James Christensen of NEPAtriotsDraft.com for the outstanding work getting the scoop on all the NFL undrafted free ageny signings. I’ve been following James for a long time and to see him rise to the national scene by providing amazing insider info has been a pleasure to watch. Especially since the Patriots are the team he focuses on most.

Here’s the current list of Pats signees. Clearly they’re throwing some potential pass rushers at the wall, but most likely the only way these guys are going to make the team is to demonstrate they can be core special teams players who might be able to slowly get worked into sub packages on defense.

And of course they had to give Dante Scarnecchia some more fresh meat to work with. You never know how much a guy will blossom under the great coaching of Scar.

Corey Woods (OT, Akron)
Jeremy Ross (WR/KR, Cal)
Alex Silvestro (DE, Rutgers)
Jeff Tarpinian (LB, Iowa)
Kyle Hix (OT, Texas)
Mike Berry (OL, Auburn)
Will Yeatman (TE/OT, Maryland)
Ryan Coulson (DE, Nevada)
Clay Nurse (DE, Illinois)
