Aside from Haynesworth, nothing too exciting from Patriots camp day one

July 28, 2011 by Mike Dussault

As we not-so-patiently wait for the Albert Haynesworth deal to be finalized (no slam dunk in my opinion) we’ve been scanning the practice reports from this morning and there doesn’t look to be anything too exciting or revealing.

Mankins can’t practice until Friday.

Matt Light could be close to returning. This would be huge.

Nick Kaczur still MIA.

Mike Reiss has the rookie numbers. These are bound to change but my initial thoughts below.

2 – K Chris Koepplin – whatever
15 – QB Ryan Mallett – perfect
16 – WR Tyree Barnes – whatever
21 – CB Ras-I Dowling – like it, hope he keeps it
29 – RB Shane Vereen – not bad, but will he want 34 if Morris gets cut?
37 – RB Stevan Ridley – no no no. No one touches Rodney’s number yet.
41 – CB Malcolm Williams – fine
44 – FB Eric Kettani – wish someone else had 44, i’m sure someone will.
46 – LB Anthony Leonard – whatever
47 – LB/LS Ryan Coulson – whatever
48 – LB Jeff Tarpinian – why not
49 – OLB/DE Markell Carter – kinda like it, but not sure if he’d keep it.
60 – DL Aaron Lavarias  – wish Cannon had 60.
61 – OL Marcus Cannon – fine.
61 – DE Clay Nurse – sure
66 – OL Mike Berry – eh.
69 – DE Alex Silvestro – kind of perfect for him
69 – OL Corey Woods – whatevs
71 – OL Kyle Hix  – whatevs
74 – OT Nate Solder (same number as defender Kyle Love) : this’ll change, no coment
80 – TE Lee Smith – don’t like this at all.
81 – WR Jeremy Ross – whtevs
88 – TE Will Yeatman – give 88 to Lee Smith!
92 – DL Marcus Stroud – not any more. It will be Haynesworth’s.

You could read way too much into this picture if you were so inclined, but it looks like a base 3-4 defense install with Moore at ROLB and Cunningham at LOLB with Ninkovich standing close by. Not sure where the 3rd DL with Love and Wilfork is.

This could be Haynesworth if he doesn’t fall in line with the Patriots way…

NFL/Bowen: Thoughts on Patriots, Haynesworth

NFL/Bowen: Thoughts on Patriots, Haynesworth

Good stuff from Bowen:

Forget Haynesworth’s last season in Washington, conditioning tests, Shanahan, etc.  Because he has legitimate talent on the D-Line. I don’t see any real risk leveraging a future late round draft pick to bring in a veteran that has the ability of a three-down player in any D-Line rotation. If he doesn’t work out, then cut him loose. It is that easy.

Making the Leap, No. 5: Patriots DE Chandler Jones – NFL.com

Making the Leap, No. 5: Patriots DE Chandler Jones – NFL.com Too much to say this defense will go as far as Jones takes them? Maybe not, he needs to be a huge force this year, and so far in camp it looks like he could be.
