Tavon Wilson/National Football Post Scouting Report

April 28, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Tavon Wilson/National Football Post Scouting Report

Well it isn’t pretty but here’s National Football Post’s scouting report on Tavon Wilson.

A thickly put together safety prospect with a compact frame and natural girth through the mid section. However, looks heavy-footed when trying to re-direct and isn’t real sudden/explosive in space. Tries to sit into his drop off the line and does a decent job keeping his base down and feet under him. However, gets upright when asked to turn and run, is stiff in the hips and lacks the range to get off the top as a centerfielder. Struggles in tight areas as well, doesn’t feel routes develop around him quickly and lacks the fluidity to open up his hips laterally and close. Gets very grabby and is uncomfortable in space and doesn’t possess the short area quickness/range to hold up in man. Possesses questionable instincts as well, rarely getting early jumps on the football and struggles to recognize his run/pass keys at times.

Displays a slight burst attacking downhill and running the alley. Locates the football quickly and has the tenacity needed to work his way toward the ball carrier. However, lacks that second gear to routinely make the play. Sees his fair share of angles outpaced toward daylight and isn’t the most effective when asked to breakdown one-on-one. Lowers his shoulder into contact and generates some pop into contact when in a phone booth. However, is inconsistent wrapping up at times, as he will slip off backs and allow ball carriers to create through contact.

Patriots draft Illinois safety Tavon Wilson (?) in 2nd round

April 28, 2012 by Mike Dussault

It happens every year. The Patriots draft a guy that not even Greg Cosell knows who he is. This year’s edition is Illinois safety Tavon Wilson who seems to have zero scouting information on him available on the internet, except that he’s 6-00, 205 and ran a 4.52 40-yard dash.

Oh and here’s a picture of him pumping a fist. Looks pretty awesome, huh?

So stay tuned, information as to just who the hell this guy is and what kind of player he is will be slowly coming out.

Patriots draft day two thoughts

April 27, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Although the Pats had a universally-praised day one of draft picks there’s still work to be done today and tomorrow. While they only have two second-round picks remaining in the draft, I expect they’ll try to work the trade downs as much as possible to pick up some additional selections. I wouldn’t rule out a potential Brian Hoyer trade as to add some picks as well.

What positions do I see as needs still? Well I think there are a lot of defensive backs that will be available in the next two rounds who could be impact players like Brandon Boykin, DeQuan Menzie and Trumaine Johnson. There are also some running backs that might interest the Pats as well like Robert Turbin.

I also still have quite a few wide receivers that I like who are still available like Mohamed Sanu and Joe Adams.

We’ll see how it all plays out but if I had to bet, I’d go something like this.

  • 48th overall: Defensive Back (with return potential perhaps)
  • 62nd overall: TRADE DOWN (3rd & 4th round picks acquired)
  • 3rd round: Wide Receiver (with return potential if not from previous pick)

Jones is the prototype for the “elephant’’ position that was made famous in these parts by Willie McGinest. The position made a comeback last season when Andre Carter and then Mark Anderson filled the role.

McGinest was 6 feet 5 inches and 270 pounds. Jones is, guess what, 6-5 ½, 266, has long arms at 35 ½ inches, and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.82. An elephant is an end/outside linebacker hybrid. It’s a very demanding position in this defense and has yet to be played well by a young player: Rosevelt Colvin and Adalius Thomas filled the role at times and had to be acquired from another team to do it.

An elephant has to be able to take on tackles, tight ends, and fullbacks in the running game. So the player must be strong to hold the point of attack. He also has to be smart enough to read the motions of the offense and understand what different formations mean. The player has to be agile enough to drop into coverage, but also quick enough to get after the quarterback.

ProJo/Daniels: Former coaches rave about Patriots’ pick-ups

“They’re getting a blue collar, I would say undervalued player around the league,” Harbaugh said. “Don’t sleep on Lawrence Guy. Don’t under estimate this player. He’s a really good football player — run and pass. Love him to death. Every time I see him he gives me this big giant Lawrence Guy hug. He’s a […]
