Patriots will struggle in post-Tom Brady era – AFC East Blog – ESPN

Patriots will struggle in post-Tom Brady era – AFC East Blog – ESPN

Not even a Hoodie Head like myself is going to argue that the Pats will simply keep on chugging once Brady and Belichick leave, but I would argue that Belichick is the more important piece of the puzzle, by a nose.

Look, Brady’s probably going to be the greatest QB of all time by the time he hangs them up. You can’t minimize the player he is, but the precedent is there with the 49ers for a team to maintain a level of dominance through a quarterback transition. Belichick has spoken admirably of what San Francisco did going from Montana to Young, and with his sense of history it wouldn’t surprise me to see him try to do the same thing in New England.

There’s also the matter of the currently much-maligned Patriots defense. In a few years they will start to hit their peak, and with the talent that has been added over the last few seasons there’s no telling what their ceiling is. So that should also help. Just look at how long Baltimore has gotten by with a great defense and just average quarterback play.

Finally there’s Belichick. In football the coach is king and BB affects every facet of the Patriots football organization. Some will point to the Matt Cassel year as an example of how the Pats can survive without Brady, but that was a team that simply won the games the should’ve and lost to the every good team they played. That makes 2008 a little deceiving. Still, there’s no arguing that the Pats were prepared when Brady went down, and there’s plenty of reasons to believe that Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett would be capable if put in the same situation. Last year’s Colts team shows just how badly things can go if you don’t have a viable back up quarterback plan.

Ultimately Belichick and Brady are so intertwined it’s hard to make definitive statements about what one would do without the other. But as long as the Belichick system is in place the odds seem decent that the Patriots will remain competitive after Brady retires.

What I do think they need is a little more to go around them,” Light said. “They need that young guy to go in on third down and get them off the field.

Pats Pub/Balestrieri: Memo to Jets, Don’t Fight the Last War, Fight the Next One

Pats Pub/Balestrieri: Memo to Jets, Don’t Fight the Last War, Fight the Next One

Great stuff from Steve Balestrieri here, and something that I’ve been wondering all off-season. If you’re in the AFC East and you’re not building a team to stop Gronkandez then WTF are you doing? Oh well, I’m not complaining. Maybe the Jets know something I don’t?

So the Jets are bringing in big, physical safeties with limited coverage skills to combat the Patriots tight ends? They will need to upgrade their pass rush and get not good but great play from their CBs because, although this would have and did work last year, when the Patriots go to a 3 0r 4 wide look, it is going to be vastly different than last year. In the 46 defense, the SS moves to cover the 3rd WR. That leaves them vulnerable to the short pass underneath as well as no over the top help. The Jets linebackers were a poor lot in coverage last season overall and their plan has to be being physical and jamming them underneath.

New England Patriots draft pick Alfonzo Dennard has his supporters – ESPN Boston

New England Patriots draft pick Alfonzo Dennard has his supporters – ESPN Boston

Dennard is one of the most exciting wild cards heading into training camp this year. The Pats have struggled for numerous years to find a third cornerback and Dennard has just the right mix of physicality and diversity of skill to be a good fit there.

“That isn’t who he is, that’s never been who he is, and that’s not going to be who he is in the future,” Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said. “And I put my reputation, and I put everything I stand for as a football coach behind that young man. "He is a tremendous young man, and one who you want not only representing you as a football player, but the type of kid you want in your community, the type of kid you want representing your organization,” Pelini continued.

Just about every defense in the NFL has studied the Patriots’ Hybrid 12 personnel package (one running back, two tight ends, two wide receivers) to determine how many problems those two tight ends can create. Aaron Hernandez can line up as a wide receiver, a slot receiver, an inline tight end, a wing, a fullback or even a running back. Rob Gronkowski can line up as an inline tight end, a slot or a wing. No matter what defensive personnel is on the field, the Patriots can make you feel like you are in the wrong one. Play base personnel with a front seven and four defensive backs and they spread you out in a four-wide look. Play nickel defense with an extra cornerback subbing for a linebacker in the front seven, and they condense the set and run right at you. It’s a problem, and defenses are studying the Big Nickel concept for an answer.

Got a (Big) Nickel? You’ll need one to combat hybrid offenses this fall – NFL – CBSSports.com

Kyle Arrington manned the first team with Talib to open OTAs while Alfonzo Dennard and Dowling manned the second unit — take that as you will. They all looked terrific — add as much salt as necessary, given the lack of pads and contact — in their first run through of the offseason, and it […]
