Secondary expectations for Patriots – BostonHerald.com

Secondary expectations for Patriots – BostonHerald.com

There are so many questions for the Patriots secondary this year. Who will stay healthy? Can Devin McCourty bounce back? Is there really an answer for our second starting safety on the roster? What happens if Patrick Chung gets hurt again?

Regardless of the answers it will be tough for them to be much worse than they were last year.

It was really weird. After a few minutes of just kind of getting over that, just focusing on the opportunity and the option to play for the organization then you start really getting excited and geared up,” he said. “What a class act organization and coaches and everyone involved, and the players over there. It’s a special place, that’s for sure, but it just didn’t make sense to go there compared to Tampa.

You’ve just got to go out and compete and work hard, show the coaches that you can be reliable and dependable, and they know that you know what you’re doing. There’s always competition, that’s what the coaches stress to us.

Didn’t get to lock in too much on the young running backs – Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley – but from an eye-test perspective it looked like Vereen was in good condition and perhaps a bit bigger than he was in 2011.

Jeff Howe also mentioned that Vereen was getting reps with the fist team.

OTA #1 observations – Extra Points – Boston.com

Great recap of today from Greg Bedard, including a contrary opinion to what we posted earlier with Mike Reiss saying he thought Ras-I looked good.

None of the rookies just assumed a starting role. That’s no surprise at all. But Chandler Jones, Dont’a Hightower and Tavon Wilson appeared to not be far off from being in the mix. Not much jumped out about Jones that we didn’t already know. He’s learning his way around this defense. Same with Jake Bequette.

Nate Solder, predictably, looks like the starting left tackle, while Dan Connolly appears to have the edge over Dan Koppen at center. Robert Gallery was filling in for Mankins, and Ryan Wendell was in for Waters. Marcus Cannon was in for Vollmer. Now, maybe this doesn’t mean a whole lot because there were three key absences on the line, but it’s worth pointing out.

You don’t know what he sees, or what he knows, but he always is in the right place and has incredible instincts for a corner when sometimes he runs the routes [before] the receivers. He has great intuition and he obviously sees everything on the field. He sees the quarterback, he sees the split of […]
