new england patriots

June 26, 2012 by Mike Dussault

I think they need to be able to throw the ball down the field. Not just short, intermediate routes. I think they’re going to have to do a better job of taking some shots down the field.

Rodney Harrison Believes Peyton Manning Will Not Lead Denver Broncos to Super Bowl, Thinks Patriots Can Repeat as AFC Champions – New England Patriots – NESN.com

Sensing a theme today? Do the Pats need to stretch the field more? Is that why they lost those four games last year?

No question you want to attack all levels of a defense, but there’s no question the Patriots will be hard to stop no matter how well they throw the ball deep.

Whether he’s the proverbial deep threat or not, I can promise you Brandon Lloyd will provide a new challenge for opposing defenses. You might not need to put help over the top of him, but you better get help on him.

Bill Belichick really likes seeing how NFC South teams practice. That’s the conclusion we’ve drawn from a Boston Herald report that the Patriots are talking to the Buccaneers about holding joint practices this summer. We’ve already heard word that Belichick and Saints interim head coach Joe Vitt were talking about getting their crews together and the Patriots had joint sessions with the Saints and Falcons in 2010.

Report: Bucs, Patriots talking about joint practices | ProFootballTalk

There wasn’t enough time last year to do these joint practices but Belichick loved what he got out of them in 2010 so it makes sense he’d do them again.

Patriots re-sign safety James Ihedigbo – Extra Points – Boston.com

This year’s Patriots training camp is going to be an epic thunderdome battle at so many spots. I don’t envy the coaching staff’s task of cutting down the roster, though I’m sure injuries will make it easier in some spots unfortunately. At least they’re prepared to deal with them no matter where they strike (cough except defensive tackle…)

Basically, beyond Chung, Gregory and Wilson, it’s wide open for one, possibly two spots. Barrett is the better athlete and more versatile, but will he breakthrough this season?

NFL 2012: Receiving Corps Power Rankings | Football Nation

Yup….

1. New England Patriots (A ) The Patriots head into 2012 with a receiving corps that is head and shoulders above all others in the NFL. Not only do the Patriots have the best slot receiver in the league in Wes Welker and arguably the most dangerous tight end in Rob Gronkowski, they also have incredible depth. Perhaps the best way to understand their depth is just to consider out that they had to cut Chad Ochocinco. He’s not the player he once was, but there are very few teams out there that would cut him after taking a chance on him.

The Patriots had one of the toughest wideout groups to sort through in terms of who will be cut and who will stick around for the regular season. I really couldn’t narrow it down past six receivers, and I think it’s feasible that they head into the season with that number. Even if Donte’ Stallworth and Deion Branch don’t contribute on special teams as much as Bill Belichick would normally look for out of his fourth and fifth wide receivers, I can’t see either of these players being cut. The Patriots probably had the best receivers in football before the addition of Brandon Lloyd. Adding him was just overkill.

Wide Receivers

1. Wes Welker A

2. Brandon Lloyd B

3. Jabar Gaffney B-

4. Deion Branch C

5. Donte’ Stallworth C

6. Julian Edelman C-

Tight Ends

1. Rob Gronkowski A

2. Aaron Hernandez B

3. Daniel Fells D

The biggest question in Foxboro will always be what if Tom Brady goes down with an injury? It happened once before and Matt Cassel answered the bell. Teams around the league tell me Brian Hoyer and backup Ryan Mallet could keep this team running for a month. As for the other nine criteria, the Patriots did a masterful job in the offseason. Backups on this team include: WRs Deon Branch, Donte Stallworth, Jabar Gaffney, OLs Robert Gallery, Marcus Cannon, RB Joseph Addai, TE Daniel Fells, DLs Jonathan Fanane, Ron Brace, Gerard Warren, LBs Chandler Jones, Donta Hightower, DBs Raz I Dowling and Will Allen, and core special teamers Julian Edelman, Tony Fiametta, Spencer Larson, and Danny Woodhead who can all play a position well.

Right way to build roster depth? Patriots, Steelers, Bears, Cowboys, Lions do it best – NFL – CBSSports.com News, Rumors, Scores, Stats, Fantasy
