new england patriots

July 6, 2012 by Mike Dussault

In one Patriots playbook I’ve seen (the 2004 version), there were 25 different single receiver routes, and that doesn’t count all the available options. Nor does it cover where those routes are run in a split on the field, or how the receivers run routes in tandem. There were 17 different two-man route combos in the playbook I saw, and five different three-man route combos. Once you’ve mastered all that stuff, there’s then the matter of the call in any pass play – the name of the route group that a team decides on any pass play for anywhere from one to five receivers. Add in the protection at the line, and you have the start of what will be an eventual Patriots play call.

Here’s that 2004 playbook if you want to check it out.

Turn On The Jets 12 Pack: Damn Those Patriots – Turn On The Jets

Turn On The Jets 12 Pack: Damn Those Patriots – Turn On The Jets

Good stuff from a Jets perspective. If there’s one thing I’m surprised about with the Jets it’s that they don’t have a clear personnel move this off-season that looks to counter Gronk & Hernandez. Gronk especially. I thought the Jets would be all over some big in the box safety types. Maybe Bell and Landry can do it.

But it seems to me more like the Jets are doing their own thing this off-season rather than reacting to stopping the Patriots. Not so sure that’s a good thing for them.

In years past, treading between the numbers was a danger zone for receivers, who expected to be re-routed if they tried to run a crossing pattern or to take a potentially concussive hit once they caught the ball. With officials being more cognizant of penalizing helmet-to-helmet hits, players have backed off, making the middle of the field a far safer place to play.

For proof, look at the New England Patriots. Wes Welker, Gronkowski and Hernandez work the middle of the field like an Etch A Sketch. They exploit matchups, talent and rules arguably better than any team in the league – especially with a pinpoint passer in Tom Brady.

Patriots look to rely on 5 – BostonHerald.com

Patriots look to rely on 5 – BostonHerald.com

Solid list of five from Howe (McCourty, Chung, Spikes, Lloyd, Solder). If I had to add two more I’d put Ridley and Trevor Scott.

Ridley must develop the consistency that the Law Firm had (not that that is an easy thing to do). Whether it’s Woodhead or Vereen more featured on third down is an after thought. Ridley must give them the tough yards and break some long runs.

Whether Andre Carter comes back or not the Patriots are sitting right now with 20 less sacks than they had in 2010 with him and Mark Anderson. Trevor Scott seems the top candidate to replace Carter on the right side of the defensive line. He flashed versatility and playmaking ability with the Raiders before blowing out his ACL in 2010. He should be fully recovered and is a good bet to play the most of any other defensive new addition.

Call it a dynasty? The Patriots have won the Ultimate Rookie Challenge at the rookie symposium for the third time in the last four seminars. Every rookie was expected to attend last week’s symposium, and the Patriots took home the quiz-show crown once again. They also won in 2008 and 2009 (the 2011 symposium was cancelled due to the lockout), and each rookie received an iPad as a prize.
