new england patriots

August 18, 2012 by Mike Dussault

The Bill Belichick trademark 3-4 base defense always had three big guys up front – the two 5-technique defensive ends flanking the burly nose tackle. Think Ty Warren and Richard Seymour as bookends, with Vince Wilfork at the nose. But this is a new-look defense, with just two big bodies in the middle and then two hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker types on each side. Put three big linebackers behind them – one of whom was a first-round pick (Dont’a Hightower) – and you have the makings of a new-look, more flexible front-seven. So far, so good with this significant change.

Great, must-read recap from Reiss about what has stood out in camp so far…

I always quote the great Michigan coach, Fielding H. Yost, who said ‘enjoy your struggle.’ It’s a necessary process. You need to go through it, and maybe it’s too cliché to say, but to bleed together, to get the camaraderie going. [Training camp] is something you need to go through to build trust that the guy next to you is going to get his block …

Great quote from a great must-read article. I think the first time one of the “night off” punts gets dropped it will be a sign the Patriots window is truly closing. But Light, Wilfork, Vollmer and now Jones have all made the tough catches and spread some joy through their team to wrap up training camp grind.

Letter From Camp 3 | Barstool Sports: Boston

Letter From Camp 3 | Barstool Sports: Boston

Interesting nuggets from Jerry Thornton…

On the defensive side of the ball, it’s pretty much been Camp Stability. Unlike the last few years where they went through starters like “Game of Thrones” goes through side characters, the top 11 and the sub packages have been set for weeks. Chandler Jones put an arm bar on the right end spot in the first week. It took Dont’a Hightower about a half hour to lock up the Sam linebacker. Steve Gregory is the free safety, Ras-I Dowling the nickel. They ran a lot of situational stuff and on short yardage, Jones kicks inside and Hightower moves up to the line in that Jack spot he sometimes played for Nick Saban. It might just be due to the fact they haven’t had much chance to install the whole scheme and things will get more complicated as we go. But for now it’s nice to have 11-14 familiar faces instead of a cast of thousands.

Jeff Demps fits all Belichick, Patriots stand for – NFL.com

The Patriots have injuries in the backfield, and New England has nothing to lose by acquiring Demps. He won’t break the bank, but he will give Belichick another project to work on – while Rex Ryan stares out of dark windows over New Jersey, wondering what could have been.

It says here that these scraps do not necessarily represent a deeper problem within the team – at the same time, the feistiness is worth noting for several reasons, not the least of which is that the Patriots have rarely had training camp fights since Belichick took over in 2000. But a combination of factors have led to an increased level of agitation over the last three weeks: Frustration: For all the talk we’ve heard about New England’s world-class offense, the defense has pretty much run the show over the first three weeks. As anyone who has been at camp can tell you, there’s a healthy amount of trash talking that goes on between the offense and defense during the 11-on-11 drills at a training camp practice. And the defense loves getting better of a unit that is full of high profile individuals, and isn’t shy about letting the offense know when they’ve one-upped them. A little talking, there’s no problem. You get beaten a handful of times – accompanied by more jawing – then, the frustration levels are going to increase.

I definitely feel honored to be able to wear this number,” Hightower said. “I haven’t spoken to Tedy yet about it, but I’ve read that he didn’t want it to be retired and he hoped another linebacker would come in and be able to wear this number and be able to play as well. Hopefully […]
