Retro ReFo: Super Bowl XXXVI | ProFootballFocus.com

Very cool PFF breakdown of Super Bowl 36…

It’s something fans of Tom Brady (-0.8) don’t like to hear and clearly, as the years wore on, the phrase became redundant, but you can’t watch this game without thinking ‘Game Manager’ was the very epitome of the role he performed. A powerful running game, a clever defensive plan, and the quarterback is essentially left with the job of not messing it all up. All of 66% of his meager 145 passing yards came after the catch, and on the final game-winning drive, 68%. That drive is famous (among other things) for John Madden saying he would just run out the clock and being a little incredulous when the Patriots didn’t just kneel on it. Perhaps what he didn’t count on was the Rams somehow contriving to let the receiver on most of the dump-offs get out of bounds. No, this wasn’t a classic performance from Brady, he made as many poor throws as he did good ones but, in the end, his two best throws (the TD and the final throw to Brown) were the ones that will be remembered.

January 29, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Frenz and I are going to have a little fun with the podcast tomorrow (11am EST), handing out our awards to deserving Patriots and others from another spectacular season in 2012. Some will be silly and some will be serious, but we wanted to open up the floor to our readers and listeners on some of the categories.

So we want to hear from you guys, you can answer in the comments below, or tweet or email us. Got your own award you want to give out, you can do that too.  It’s all in fun and a way to celebrate a season that had a lot of great moments despite it’s disappointing end.

What’s the one Patriots game in 2012 you wish you attended in person?

What’s the one Patriots game in 2012 you’re glad you didn’t attend?

Who’s your favorite Patriot from 2012 (and why if you want to share)?

Who’s your most unfavorite Patriot from 2012 (and why)?

Best 2012 Patriots moment?

Worst 2012 Patriots moment?

We’ll read the best responses on the air and dish out the awards to those who get the most votes. We also have plenty of our own that we’ll be handing out. And the floor is always open if there’s a special one you’d like to give out.

Expect the Buttfumble to take home quite a few!

So what do you guys have to say?

The Patriots were exceptional at forcing turnovers this season, and Ninkovich seemed to find his way around the ball in critical situations. But nonetheless, the defensive end group lacked a dynamic pass rusher that could get to the quarterback consistently when the team rushed just four players after Jones suffered a pair of ankle injuries. Jones’ ceiling remains high, and he should improve this offseason with a full slate of workouts, team activities and training camp to build from.

One scout’s priority list for Patriots: Wide receiver, safety and pass rusher – WEEI | Christopher Price

January 28, 2013 by Mike Dussault

One scout’s priority list for Patriots: Wide receiver, safety and pass rusher – WEEI | Christopher Price

Good read, and no I’m not the scout despite them saying exactly what I’ve been laying out as the Pats needs for the offseason.

“Wide receiver: The Patriots need to add a vertical speed player with some size to the offense. Rob Gronkowski stretches the seams, and they are efficient running the ball, as well as with their horizontal passing attack. People try to get hands on their hands on wide receivers, and bracket inside options. If Gronk and Hernandez are on the field at the same time, they put stress on the defense – but not as much vertically. The Patriots do have fast wide receivers, but they are small, and require Brady to be more accurate on his deeper throws. And because of their size, they aren’t consistent vertical threats. What they need is a wide receiver who is a vertical threat, but is also big enough to be physical in press coverage.”

The Post-Gronk Pats at Tight End

After my too-long tribute to Gronk yesterday it’s now time to take stock of the Patriots without Rob Gronkowski. The formerly cap-strapped team now has $17.5 million in space, about as much as they started the offseason with. There’s room for free agents and there’s definitely room for some draft picks. Let’s take a positional […]
