Myron Pryor

November 7, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Myron Pryor, Jake Ballard not practicing – time to look to 2013. Belichick confirmed that the clock has not started on either player on their physically unable to perform list – defensive tackle Myron Pryor and tight end Jake Ballard. According to the NFL, “if a player did not start to practice by the Tuesday following Week 9 (yesterday), he remains on reserve/PUP and is ineligible to return this season. If they are in the last year of [a] contract, it tolls.” Both Pryor and Ballard are in the final year of their contracts and thus can be projected into the 2013 mix. With Pryor, this is somewhat of a surprise

Welp there goes the “Myron Pryor could really help this defense” story line for this year. The Pats will have to get creative to generate some interior rush. Cunningham must continue to develop, and perhaps Justin Francis can continue to make strides after seeing a season-high 19 snaps against the Rams in an all-DE sub-package.

Shiancoe & Pryor status report – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Anyone who has been with this blog through the off-season knows I’m excited about what Myron Pryor could potentially add to the defense. The interior pass rush has been missing for two years.

Now I love Vince Wilfork, but getting him off the field on third and longs wouldn’t be the worst thing. Especially for someone who can get up the field and cause some chaos. We’ll see if Pryor has anything left to offer, but he could add a new element to the defense.

Patriots put Koppen, Pryor on IR

September 21, 2011 by Mike Dussault

As if the injury to Hernando wasn’t enough the buzz kill just got worse with both Dan Koppen and Myron Pryor having their 2011 seasons ended on IR.

There was some optimism last week that Koppen might return but it looks like the ankle was worse than anyone initially thought. Dan Connolly is a decent replacement, in comparison to the undrafted rookie the Jets have filling in for Nick Mangold the Pats look a lot better off. Still Mangold will return, Koppen will not.

Myron Pryor is such a tease. He showed great flash as an interior rusher in the Miami opener, and now he’s done with a shoulder injury. Without him or Mike Wright things are looking a lot like last year for the interior pass rush. Landon Cohen has been brought back to fill in as he did in 2010. As we said all off-season missing Wright and Pryor was an extremely underrated cause of the pass rush problems, and now we’re dealing with the exact same thing again. Hopefully Wright can return, but after another concussion I’m not holding my breath that he’ll be out there any time soon.

These are both significant losses for the Patriots to overcome, but as they say, next man up do your job.

Pryor back, Brace headed to IR for Patriots?

January 1, 2011 by Mike Dussault

News came via Ian Rapoport today that pass rush specialist Myron Pryor is set to return tomorrow while it looks like Ron Brace is done for the playoffs with an elbow injury.

Losing Brace does hurt the Pats as depth along the line was already thin, so basically they’re becoming a little stronger in pass rush and a little weaker in run stopping.

If the Patriots face the Ravens in the divisional round they probably could use Brace, since the 3-4 defense will surely be used a lot to stop Ray Rice. Although in the first meeting between the two teams the Patriots went with a Deaderick – Warren – Wilfork front. But we haven’t seen much of Deaderick lately.

The good news is that the return of a healthy and rested Brandon Spikes should be a boost to the 3-4 base.

As for Brace it was an up and down season for him, beginning when he couldn’t pass his physical and stayed on PUP for much of training camp. He showed some signs of life at times, namely the fourth down goal line stop against Adrian Peterson, however the games he played most in were the only two losses this season (@ Jets 67%, @ Browns 71%).

With the return of Ty Warren, Brace will likely be in a stiff competition with Deaderick in 2011. For now he can worry about getting his elbow healthy.

Did you know Myron Pryor had a 71-yard fumble return for a TD in college?
