Patriots acquire CB Michael Jackson from trade with Lions

August 9, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

First announced by the Lions themselves, the Patriots have traded an undisclosed 2022 draft pick in exchange for CB Michael Jackson.

The Detroit Lions announced today that they have traded CB Michael Jackson to the New England Patriots in exchange for an undisclosed 2022 draft selection.

— Detroit Lions (@Lions) August 9, 2020

Initially picked by Dallas 158th overall in the 2019 draft, Jackson was signed from the Cowboys practice squad by the Lions last October. During his time in Detroit, he only suited up for one game and didn’t record a defensive snap.

Per the Lions website this morning, Jackson was part of a number of cuts from their roster, but clearly, Bill Belichick didn’t want to risk losing him on waivers, so for the cost of what I would assume to be a late-round 2022 pick, Jackson is a Patriot.

Hi Tom. The Lions were going to waive him, it seems, but before that move was processed they traded him to the Patriots instead.

The current depth at the CB position:

Stephon Gilmore
Jason McCourty
Jonathan Jones
J.C. Jackson
Joejuan Williams
D’Angelo Ross
Myles Bryant
Michael Jackson

It’s far to early to tell what this new addition will bring, Jackson was considered a good prospect coming out of college but seems to have struggled to click at the pro level.

Belichick’s no-tolerance policy with players being on time is well documented; most recently with Revis and running back Jonas Gray being sent home from the team facility during the 2014 regular season for arriving late.

Over his 16 years as coach, it’s one of the primary messages he stresses with players, noting that unpredictable weather is part of living in New England and to always plan accordingly with a larger margin for error.

However, this is believed to be the first time Belichick has sidelined a player for multiple weeks in a voluntary setting.

“[Fellow former Redskins defensive lineman Andre Carter and I] were talking, just about how different it is, how we really like this place,” said Haynesworth. “For me, it’s a career-saving place for me to come. I had no idea it would be like this. It’s unbelievable. I wish I kinda took two years ago and came here.”

When it was noted he earned a handsome payday for his time – as turbulent as it was – with the Redskins, Haynesworth added, “You know what, when all is said and done, hell, I’d give that money back and I’d come here.”

Haynesworth started for New England and got tremendous penetration on the first snap which led to a New York fumble. Haynesworth finished with two tackles overall.

“It was great,” said Haynesworth. “I need to knock off a lot of rust. I’ve kind of been just rusting, sitting in D.C. So, I need to get back, get back to that playing form when I was with the Titans.”

While rhapsodizing about the depth on the defensive line, suggesting it was better than during his best days in Tennessee, and noting how that will allow him to “play as hard as I possibly can,” Haynesworth raved about Bill Belichick’s defensive schemes and called him a “brilliant coach.” He also praised the support he’s received in New England.

“Everybody is here for you,” Haynesworth said when a reporter noted he seemed relaxed while addressing the media for only the second time since arriving. “I really enjoy that. I know my head coach is for me. I know my owner is for me. I know my players are for me. I feel relaxed, I’m having fun again. I’m having fun playing football again.”

I do think there is still interest in [Mat Light] coming back if the sides can reach an agreement. I’d lean toward it not happening, with Light landing in Kansas City. Makes too much sense to me.

Mike Reiss

Interesting. I’ve been of the opinion that Light would be back for a year or two, giving Solder some time. Definitely something we’ll ask Reiss about this weekend on the podcast.
