logan ryan

October 14, 2013 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots value physicality and strong play against the run from cornerbacks, which is one reason why a prospect like 5-foot-11, 195-pound Logan Ryan (third round, Rutgers) appealed to them. On the Saints’ first offensive play, Ryan’s run force was textbook (and fearless) as he took on offensive lineman Bryce Harris (6-6, 300) and forced running back Darren Sproles back toward the pursuit of the defense (he was stopped for a 1-yard gain). We thought this was a good example of how a cornerback’s ability and willingness to play the run is critical in the Patriots’ scheme, and also how Ryan rose up to help the Patriots in an expanded role Sunday.

If Talib is out for any length of time, Logan Ryan is about to be an even more integral part of the defense.

Getting a feel for rookie CB Ryan – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

We all know it’s going to happen at some point that Logan Ryan gets thrust into playing a big role. Might as well be sooner than later.

At 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, he has good size for the position. That specifically shows up with run force, which the Patriots value as much as anyone with cornerbacks. Ryan doesn’t have the same fluid movements as Talib (few do), but his style of play has some similarities to Arrington (5-10, 190) from this viewpoint. He can be physical at the line of scrimmage and looks to have flexibility to line up inside and outside. Some competitive ball skills as well.

Rookie cornerback Logan Ryan had a strong day, picking off a pass and breaking up another. The rap on Ryan based off of draft research was that he lacked top end speed. In watching him today, it felt as though he was always just fast enough to stick with whichever wide receiver he was covering. He has good length, too.

Scouting report: Logan Ryan – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

What stands out when evaluating Ryan is his aggressive, physical style of play. He is unafraid to engage a wide receiver at the line of scrimmage to knock him off of his route, and he is an aggressive run defender with an edge-setting mentality. Patriots cornerbacks are asked to ably defend the run (Kyle Arrington and Devin McCourty, previously a cornerback, are both solid run defenders), and Ryan’s style of play should fit in in that sense. He has good ball skills and anticipation to disrupt the football at the point of catch. He has good pattern-read skills and anticipation. The lack of top end speed hurts Ryan as a perimeter cornerback in man-to-man coverage, as bigger defenders who can leverage him have a chance to break free.

I can’t think of a better person to be a Patriot alongside myself other than Duron Harmon.

Good size for a corner. Extremely physical. Active all across the field, and not afraid to come up an participate in the run game. Reckless abandon for his body, but still a sound tackler. Constantly around the football, makes plays on the ball. Intelligent. Experience with both man and zone coverage. Fluid hips.
