logan ryan

I think the coolest thing about watching those two is they stayed up here most of the offseason,” McCourty said Wednesday at NESN. “They were already ahead when we came back for the offseason program. You could just see how focused they are on coming back and having big years. Duron knows it’s an open spot at the other safety position. And that’s how he attacked it this offseason. He did everything possible to put himself in competition and go out there and win it.

Good read on Logan Ryan, and I think when you look at the depth at safety, it’s understandable why they might want to expose him to the position this spring and summer. Far better now than after injuries hit and they’re left to scramble to find an answer.

Last year [Marquice] Cole sort of did that, played some safety, played some nickel corner, played a little bit on the perimeter. Logan did that [too]. We’ll have to see how it all comes together, but I would imagine in the spring that we probably give [him] some exposure [at safety again],” Belichick said. “I think there’s definitely a place for that too with the different personnel groups and the different types of receivers that we see. Every time it’s three receivers, it isn’t quite three receivers; it depends on who those three guys are and how you want to match up on them and so forth. So some flexibility for us defensively is probably a good thing over a long haul.

This makes sense. What didn’t make sense was putting Logan Ryan out as a safety with McCourty as the starting safety tandem.

Patriots may take look with Logan Ryan at safety | Boston Herald

Don’t get this report about Logan Ryan moving to free safety at all. I get that Ryan is promising and is kind of in a log jam at cornerback at the moment, but as much as the Patriots want to put their best guys on the field, I don’t think they want to do it at the expense of not putting them in the best position to succeed.

Ryan seems like he does have the skillset to play safety, but here are the other factors:

– Moving Devin McCourty to strong safety would be his third position change in five seasons. Not that it’s that much different than free safety, but McCourty excelled last season at free safety.

– Duron Harmon looked pretty promising to me last year, especially showing great back end range that might even be better than McCourty’s. I also think he’s the more physical player than Ryan.

– Ryan excelled in the slot and blitzing (see the second Jets game). Maybe strong safety makes more sense for him, but it’s not like he’s the thumper everyone is hoping for.

Ultimately I think you let Ryan go head-to-head with Arrington to start in the slot. Harmon should get the initial first-team reps at strong safety and then let things play out from there.

Maybe Harmon sputters. Maybe Arrington gets hurt. Things can change quickly. But to throw everything into chaos just to put Ryan on the back end of the defense seems extreme to me at this point.

No question, he’s a good player who needs to be on the field, but he was in a similar position last offseason as a rookie, behind a bunch of vets on the depth chart, and then due to injuries he ended up playing a significant role.

Point is, this doesn’t have to be figured out on paper in March.

œI don’€™t see any slowdown in his game to say, ‘€˜OK, who is better than him right now.’€™ I think it’€™s very difficult to say that,’€ he said of Mankins. ‘€œI think there are some tackles who are clear cut, because tackles do more than guards. I think that him and [right guard] Dan Connolly, it’€™s a good setup, because I think your guard makes your tackle better and your center better because they work so well together, between him and Dan. They’€™ve had a lot of changes in that line to, on the right side at tackle. I just think that the fact that he lines up and plays every snap, kicks out and plays tackle when they need to in a pinch with no loss of technique, that’€™s impressive.

One player who has proven worthy of Belichick’s trust in a big hurry is rookie cornerback Logan Ryan. The Rutgers alum had anywhere from a second to fifth-round grade among various media analysts, and there were some who simply wondered who Ryan was when New England jumped with the 83rd overall pick. At 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, and without overwhelming trail speed, Ryan had learned to use his intelligence and instinct to make himself faster in a football sense. And he thrives in Belichick’s complex defenses from the start. Ryan’s 53.3 quarterback rating allowed is the NFL’s second-best this season — only Seattle’s Richard Sherman has made life more difficult for enemy signal-callers. Ryan has allowed just 27 catches in 53 targets for 372 yards, with five interceptions and three touchdowns. In addition, he’s a fine blitzer from the slot — he understands how disguise coverage looks and read plays to anticipate when it’s best to peel off and go after the quarterback.

Ryan now has five interceptions on the season, which leads all NFL rookies. Asked how he’d like to be viewed as a player, he said, “Hard worker. Not [just] on Sundays, but during the week. I want to be consistent. It’s great to have interceptions, but you have to be consistent 50 other plays in the game. I just want to be known as someone who works hard each and every day and is consistent out there.”

Rob Gronkowski and Nate Solder are OUT vs. Cardinals

Deep breaths. Deeeeeeep breaths. That’s what I’m taking since this tweet came across my timeline… Rob Gronkowski, Nate Solder & Jonathan Cooper have been downgraded to out for #NEvsAZ. — New England Patriots (@Patriots) September 10, 2016 Gronk pulled up in a mid-August training camp practice, tweaking his hamstring and wasn’t seen again until this […]
