Logan Mankins

This Patriots fan is no longer standing by his Mankins

February 25, 2011 by Mike Dussault

The Boston media that’s at the Scouting Combine in Indy cornered Logan Mankin’s agent Frank Bauer today and got a lengthy dissertation on the contract situation:

“A young man came to them as a first round draft choice and played four solid years and made two Pro Bowls and one alternate,” he explained. “After the 2008 season was over, I approached Bill (Belichick) about a long term deal which most of that small group of Pro Bowlers always gets (rewritten). So what happens is that, we were told that because of the uncertainty of the CBA that (they) weren’t going to do anything with any players. Then they started rewriting players in the (2009 training camp). They were the lesser players and (Tom) Brady and Logan were the big contracts and they would take some time to get through. Logan was a little upset that other players were getting rewritten when everyone was told they weren’t going to get rewritten. And then Bill sat with Logan and talked about it and we said, ‘OK, we’ll play the 2009 season and play it out at $1.4 million. When we get to the uncapped yuear, there’s no rules, no regulations…being an uncapped year we can do what we want. Negotiations started and they started low. And it’s been pretty bad ever since.”

Look, none of us fans are going to exactly shed tears over Mankins’ situation because he stands to make $10.1 million dollars in 2011 playing under the Franchise Tag. I won’t get on too much of a high horse (or perhaps “Low” horse is more appropriate) because these guys are putting their bodies on the line every week and they’re just one play away from a wheelchair for the rest of their lives…. BUT…. $10 million is more than about 99% of us will ever make in our entire lives so yeah…

Then there’s also the little contract offer of 5 years, $35million that Bauer and Mankins turned down. So don’t act like it’s a travesty just because they didn’t want to make you the highest paid guard in the NFL. If that’s what you expected out of the Patriots you’ve been asleep for the past decade.

I’m just so tired of this whole situation. Mankins fell into one of the worst possible draft slot situations in history along with Vincent Jackson. Their teams have had them by the balls for a long, long time, and they still have them by the balls. And any time an employer has an employee by the balls it’s never a good situation. So I feel for Logan a little bit. And of course I love him as a player.

But this has just gone on for so long, the time has come for him to sign his tender and for the Patriots to trade him as far from New England as possible. I hear the NFC West is a great place in the fall and it’s even close to a lot of Logan’s favorite… cattle ranches!

There’s just been too much vitriol, too much damage done, to honestly believe that a long term deal could still get done. It’s time for both the team and the player to move on. I’m just happy the Pats will control where he goes.

Logan Mankins (aka My Mankins) is a tremendous player (who mauls fools). He (and his beard) has been a fixture on our offensive line since we drafted him in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft (to the shock of everyone, including Mel Kiper and his hair) and he remains an important part of our future plans (i.e. winning Super Bowls with extreme prejudice). Unfortunately, we have not been able to reach a long-term agreement, despite many attempts and proposals by both sides (you guys know how long this shit has been dragging on) . That remains our objective in utilizing the franchise designation (so don’t get too mad, Mankins, it’s worth $10.1 million!) and we are hopeful that Logan will be a Patriot (and maul many non-Patriot fools) for many years to come.

It’s official, my Mankins has been franchise tagged. Did anyone out there really expect the Patriots weren’t going use every bit of leverage that they have? Of course not. The question now is which one of three ways this goes:

  1. Mankins plays the year under the Franchise Tag which would net him $10.1 million. Some sort of hold out might be likely in this situation.
  2. This was only a way to extend their bargaining window and Pats/Mankins work out a long term deal.
  3. Pats find a suitable trade partner and unload him to a team they don’t have to see much of.

One small reason for optimism is that I can’t imagine the Pats really want to pay my Mankins $10.1 million this year. The trade price would be steep, certainly at least a 1st round pick.

Patriots set to tag Logan Mankins

February 11, 2011 by Mike Dussault

In what is probably the must unsurprising news of this young off-season, Ian Rapoport reports that the Patriots will tag Logan Mankins as their Franchise player. So yes, that is why you might’ve heard a guttural scream and things breaking from the general vicinity of the Mankins home region of California.

If Mankins thought the Patriots would allow him to just walk to off the reservation to whatever contract tickled his fancy he was surely mistaken. But he’s smarter than that. He had to know this was coming.

The good news is that it looks like they’re taking a similar approach like they took with Vince Wilfork last year. Mankins still hasn’t been officially tagged yet so perhaps they are talking about a new contract. This could be unlikely due to the uncertainty surrounding the CBA, but it’s nice to at least have a little hope they’re only using the tag as a way to extend their negotiating window before someone like the Jets swoop in and offer a $3 billion dollar contract.

Mankins is exactly the kind of player the Patriots (or any football team for that matter) need. Granted the Pats did okay without him early last season, but there’s no denying the effect he had upon his return. Re-signing Mankins long term would lock up a nice young piece to build around for the next decade.

If a long term deal isn’t reached and Mankins has to play under the franchise tag there’s no doubt he’ll play just as pissed off as he was last year. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Maybe the Pats should just keep tagging him every season just to make sure he keeps up his bad attitude and mauling ways.

Either way I hope he’s a Patriot for a long time.

Logan Mankins is one of the best players on the team,” Kraft answered. “I think there has been a little misunderstanding about some things that have been written. I just personally want to say, I hope he’s with us for a long-term and we’re going to try to do whatever we have to do to make sure that happens.

And now a minute with the Mauler…

December 9, 2010 by Mike Dussault

I don’t know what it’s going to take but we really need to re-sign Logan Mankins this off-season. The amount of praise that has been heaped on him since his return, especially from BB himself has been notable. I can’t imagine that’s not on purpose.

I don’t expect anything to get done before the end of the season, and I’m guessing Mankins is going to want to at least test the waters, but it’s pretty clear the Patriots are well aware of his value to the franchise.

Which Patriots are Free Agents after this year?

November 4, 2010 by Mike Dussault

I usually subscribe to the Bill Belichick theory of only focusing on the here and now, but let’s take a quick glance toward February and take inventory of which Patriots will be Free Agents this coming offseason.

Logan Mankins – assuming Mankins is the same old mauling Mankins we’re used to he might be the biggest priority Free Agent this coming offseason. I’m not sure if the bridge can be mended between him and the Patriots, but he’s still young and you can’t say that for the rest of the offensive line, save Sebastian Vollmer. It might be too late to sign Mankins long term, but I expect the Patriots will give it one last shot. He’s too good not to.

Matt Light – I know Light is a popular whipping boy when he has a bad game, but I think he’s actually still pretty good and can still give the Pats another solid year or two. A lot of it will depend on how the Pats feel about moving Sebastian Vollmer to LT, and putting Kaczur back at RT. That could very well be the plan given Vollmer’s ceiling. But the decision on Light will be an interesting one as he’s yet another locker room leader who’s been with the Pats since the start of the dynasty.

                               One More Year?

Fred Taylor – Given the injuries over the past two years it’s probably safe to assume the Patriots will move on from Fred, barring a miraculous rebirth this season.

Kevin Faulk – This one will depend on how Faulk’s rehab from a torn ACL goes. Does he still want to play? I think if he does and the Patriots still think he can contribute he could be back on a one year deal. One thing’s for sure, he’ll either be back with the Pats or he’ll retire.

Sammy Morris – Morris has lost the speed that made him a decent fill in option at halfback. He can still play some fullback and is a solid contributor on special teams, but it’s a safe bet the Pats move on.

Gerard Warren – Warren has been a great addition this season, playing on a one year deal. It would be smart for the Patriots to bring him back as insurance. You can never have enough versatile defensive lineman.

Quinn Ojinnaka – Ojinnaka is a backup player but is versatile. His fate could be tied to Mankins and Light.

Jared Page – Page has been hurt as of late, just as he was starting to come on. Hard to know what the Pats brass think his ceiling is. But from the limited sample size I think they’ll try to lock him up for a couple more seasons. Clearly the Pats have no problem keeping four safeties. Some of his fate could be tied to what they think of Sergio Brown who is younger and cheaper.

Benjarvus Green-Ellis – Law Firm is having a break out season and with the projected losses of Taylor and Morris it seems to make sense that Benny will get a multi-year extension. Expect him to be joined by Danny Woodhead and a high round draft pick.

                      Breakout!

Tracy White – White has been a special teams monster since coming over after last cuts from the Eagles. He should be back on a 1-2 year deal.

Ryan Wendell – Wendell is a backup guard and his fate, like Ojinnaka’s, is probably tied to Logan Mankins.

Kyle Arrington – After making a name for himself on special teams in 2009, Arrington has taken the starting RCB spot from Darius Butler and not given it up. With Leigh Bodden returning, it could put Arrington in an interesting position. Will he go back to special teams? Can he replace Jonathan “the human target” Wilhite at nickel corner? Personally I think Arrington is a Patriots-type player and should be locked up. You can never have enough physical defensive backs, who are killer special teams players.

PatsPropaganda.com 2011 Internal Free Agent Priority List

  1. Benjarvus Green-Ellis
  2. Logan Mankins (Ryan Wendell becomes a priority if Mankins walks)
  3. Matt Light
  4. Gerard Warren
  5. Kyle Arrington
  6. Jared Page
  7. Kevin Faulk (depending on rehab/desire)
  8. Tracy White

Brandon Spikes Suspended Four Games

Brandon Spikes (seen below making the biggest play of his young career against the Jets) was suspended today per Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald. It’s a four game suspension for violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy. We’re not sure what the substance was… Steroids? Weed? Sex Tape Juice? This is a significant loss […]
