Kirwan: Ninkovich honorable mention for NFL OLBs

Kirwan: Ninkovich honorable mention for NFL OLBs

So Jerod Mayo is number two for ILBs on the list, and was called a young Ray Lewis by Pat Kirwan. This is of course awesome and exciting but I’m pumped to see Ninkopoop on there even if it is just honorable mention. Every other OLB on the list (top 10 and 5 honorable mentions) were either a high round draft pick, a high priced free agent, or both.

But not Ninkovich, he was a free agent the Pats got for nothing, and quickly signed to an extension in his first year with the team. Is he Clay Matthews or Demarcus Ware? No. But he’s yet another in a long list of examples of why the Patriots are consistently good with affordable players.

And as anyone who ever stops by this blog knows, I loves me some Ninkopoop. I just think he embodies a new generation of the Patriot way. Kicked around the league for a bit, but a tough, dedicated player who you can win games with. If he gets a little more consistent, especially in the tackling department, he could get even better.

“He’s done things there in his short career with the Patriots that I wasn’t able to do until my eighth or ninth year or something like that. That’s how far along he is. That’s how good he is,” Bruschi said of the 6-foot-1, 245-pound Mayo. “I never had the ability that he has — how fast he is, how big he is and strong. The sky is the limit for him. I truly see him being the best linebacker in the game within two years. I think that’s how good he is.

“No matter what defensive scheme they run,” he added. “They’ll run some 3-4. They’ll run some 4-3 looks. And he can do it on a down-to-down basis. It’s very difficult to do, especially in that system — I know. The sky is the limit for him.”

The brain and heart of the Patriots defense. All we need now is a big right fist that can smack the QB.

Mayo probably doesn’t get the love he truly deserves here, but he’s such a huge part of the defense. A football guy who plays fast and hard and keeps his mouth shut. A role model on and off the field.

Point Blank: A Vince Wilfork Appreciation Post

After having to gather myself to write a send off for Rob Ninkovich last week, now having to do one for Vince Wilfork is making things a little misty here in the Ministry of PatsPropaganda. Wilfork retired yesterday after two final years in Houston, meaning his final game was appropriately in Foxboro against the Patriots. […]
