Bill Belichick Press Conference Transcript

Q: What is your assessment of Jamie Collins after last week’s game?

BB: I thought he showed up. He’s learning. He’s doing some different things for us. Defensively he’s got some different responsibilities playing at the end of the line, playing off the line, playing in sub situations, playing a lot in the kicking game. He’s learning every day and I think he’s definitely making progress.

Patriots vs. Buccaneers: Thoughts and Observations | NEPatriotsDraft.com – Mike Loyko

Good thoughts as always from Mike Loyko, including this…

Another impressive performance by Jamie Collins tonight. At this point in a rookie’s season all the coaching staff is asking for is to see continued improvement. I thought Collins was much improved tonight. He looked more natural and instinctive in coverage, looking on to crossers and not giving them any room to run after the catch. Collins was in on a number of tackles and showed the ability to wrap up and stop the ball-carrier in their tracks. His athleticism and speed to roam the middle of the field is a skill that the Patriots have lacked for years. I have to say I wasn’t sure how Collins would fare in his transition to LB, and I must say he has surpassed all expectations to this point.

How Does Jamie Collins Fit into the Patriots Defense in 2013? | Bleacher Report

Good read from Frenz breaking down Collins. Very interested to watch him tomorrow night, especially in coverage. I think the Pats aren’t tipping their hand in all the ways they can use him, but if he can make strides and help deal with tight ends, he’ll be worth his weight in gold.

We’ve touched on the athleticism of linebacker Jamie Collins, the Patriots’ top draft pick, and we got a good look at a different element of his game on Wednesday – power. In 7-on-7 passing drills in the red zone, Collins was called upon to cover tight end Tom Crabtree and his powerful jam knocked Crabtree off his route, effectively disrupting the timing of the play as the pass fell incomplete. The jam not only seemed to impact Crabtree, but also another receiver who was aligned on the left side who was forced to alter his route.

Stock Watch Buy: Jamie Collins – With Brandon Spikes not practicing the rookie second-round pick got a chance to run with the first unit at strong side linebacker. He was active at times, knocking down a couple of passes and nearly picking one off as he cut underneath a Bucs receiver near the goal line during a team period.

I was thinking this might be what a post-Spikes linebacker corps might look like: Collins-Hightower-Mayo. This is a good look at how Collins has been fitting in. Sure to be some growing pains with him, but he’s certainly the kind of player the Pats need on their defense.

Big-play Jamie Collins makes impact | Boston Herald

The Patriots linebacker has notched at least three forced fumbles and one interception during the first two weeks of training camp, and it doesn’t seem to be a fluky occurrence, either. Collins racked up three interceptions, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and three defensive touchdowns to go along with 21 sacks in four collegiate seasons.
