jamie collins

January 13, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Jamie Collins, linebacker, New England. The Patriots saw past Collins’ final year at Southern Miss—the team was 0-12 last fall—and they were very glad they did Saturday night. Collins would have been an apprentice this season if not for the IR-ing of Jerod Mayo and Brandon Spikes, and against the Colts, he played his first complete game of the season, logging all 65 defensive snaps and recording six tackles, a sack of Andrew Luck, an interception off Andrew Luck, two quarterback knockdowns of Andrew Luck, and one Andrew Luck pass defensed. Easy, huh? Now all Collins has to do is a repeat of that against Peyton Manning at altitude.

What a breakout game! He showed some flashes but nothing like this in the regular season.

Bruschi: [Jamie] Collins was productive last night and you saw a lot of positive things – 10 total tackles. He had some positive plays in coverage. But your playing time on this defense will depend on the game-plan of the week. If this was a team that had a different offensive philosophy, maybe you’d see a little bit less of Collins. The Patriots were mostly in sub defense last night. So do they now consider him the sub LB? In a game when you might play more regular personnel, we might not see him as much. But you can call this is a big step in his development. Biggest game of the year, against a top-ranked, and he played and produced. He can use this momentum to earning more playing time.

Contributions from linebackers Dane Fletcher and Jamie Collins, who haven’t been a big part of defensive plans prior to this point, stood out. Fletcher had played 68 total defensive snaps through the first nine games of the season and nearly matched the total on Sunday night, when he had a key forced fumble. Fletcher was thrust into action when linebacker Dont’a Hightower came out of the game late in the second quarter and didn’t play another snap the rest of the way. As for Collins, he was “active”, according to Bill Belichick. That was reflected in his snaps-to-tackle ratio, which was impressive (22 snaps, 10 tackles).

Not as many Pats on here as we’re used to, but one surprise is Jamie Collins making it as a special teamer. He had a tough outing against the Dolphins and saw his snaps reduced on defense against the Steelers, but as PFF sees it, his contributions on special teams have been superb.

Of Collins’ 18 snaps, 15 came in the second half, including eight on the final drive, which adds some context to the numbers. But from this viewpoint, seeing Collins in a sub defense (over Dont’a Hightower and Brandon Spikes) reflects that he has gained some more trust from the coaching staff in terms of his ability to grasp some of the team’s complex schemes.
